I really like the allied formations. They are very cool conceptually and gives me the option to supplement my army with that little "extra" if I feel my list is lacking somehow. As luck would have it, my army can utilize all of the formations that have been released thus far, albeit some through desperate alliances. I currently have the "Fallen Champions" (for fluff, if nothing else) and plan on taking the "StormWing" and "Firebase Cadre" in the near future. The only one I am on the fence about is the "Ghost Warriors" as I am practically clueless about Eldar. Do you like formations? Which ones are you taking?

Just waiting on Cypher to come in so I can do the fallen champion formation. Everything else so far either doesn't apply to my armies or is meh.

I will be using the ghost warriors formation. Gotta love my iyanden (though it is in fact nearly worthless and weakens my army rather than strengthens it...).
If I get 2 stormtalons in the future I will have to use that formation because it is actually pretty good.
The Tau firebase formation is the best but also not something I will use as I am not a fan of static Tau.

I'm almost certain Gray knights can take 6 stormravens since they can get them on a troops choice. At least that's what I read on /tg/ and they seem to be pretty good about that kind of thing.

Is that supposed to be a list that worries me? Really, 5 stormravens aren't that bad.

No, but it's to illustrate just how dumb the FOC abuse can get with these new rules. In practice the Stormravens would constantly being stepping on each other's shoes and the marine ground presence would be horrid.

How is it FoC abuse though? It just reminds me of crusader spam lists with BT, except without being a dedicated transport.
Actually you could do that in 30k I believe with one of the rites of war.

So how is that an abuse if it doesn't abuse anyone?

Well, it would depend on your definition of abuse. The definition is subjective but mine is when you use a rule to your advantage that goes against it's writer's intention. Of course, they could've meant for you to take 5x Ravens in order to move plastic. Such a list would require $400 base.
In addition, it's FOC abuse in the sense that you are getting free heavy support slots just for playing marines. It seems a little unfair for other armies who don't get such things *Cough* Tyranids Cough*. I am not sure exactly what term would be appropriate for this, really. Rules exploitation, maybe?
Now, I don't think any of this is necessarily a bad thing. If GW wants players to take more shinies that's their pejorative. What I think is dumb is that only a select few armies have access to extra shinies. It seems really lazy too since all needs is a PDF that states, for example,: "You can take two vendettas. They get Tank hunters. It's called the Hunter-Killer squadron".

Except anyone who can ally marines can take it, they can also ally Marines and get another if they wanted.

Which is all well and good but it's the same issue of allying with yourself. You get free FOC slots that other armies don't get which is unfair. My point is that allied formations are poorly implemented as is and needs more updates.
But then again, so do most things Games Workshop publishes.
