I just bought the Stronghold assault book for my iPad. It was cheap and I wanted to see updated rules for fortifications and was generally curious about the wall of martyrs sets.

Looking at the imperial defense network which consists of roughly $600 worth of fortifications. Do people actually buy this? Can these fortifications actually be used in regular warhammer 40k games or are they more for apocalypse style games?

$600 and 1250 points is a lot for one army. I would love to find out who owns so,e of these bad boys.

I know of people who bought it before the rules arrived,
I'd say it's more for either these three things.

Terrain.
2,5k+ games.
and once again terrain (it really does make it more cinematic)

Mmm... back in 2nd edition, we used to build our own fortifications and vehicles out of form boards and shampoo bottles. White Dwarf used to show you how.

Are GW's fortifications worth $594.23 more than my last build project, which was arguably more extensive? Probably not. Do they look better? I don't really think so. Imperial Gothic is overdone as it is.

If they aren't the proper GW size people will veto them in any game . You could technicly get one bunker and cast 8 extra ones , but if someone notices your playing with casted stuff you will get kicked out of the store . For tournaments it is even worse , because the number of people that will check for such stuff is even bigger.

What are you questioning on then, the networks in the book or the one click kits on gw's site?

Like I use the wall of martyrs network which was just meant for fun but its actually pretty good!

Dunno if I want to be involved in any event that suppresses the creative side of the hobby. I seriously don't know anyone who wants to buy fortifications from GW.

Well for events you need 100% legal stuff . But that doesn't change the fact that most non tournament games are played under the same rules and use the same scenarios. Although I could imagine a shop owner that sells bunkers or macro cannons from another firm , and lets them be played at his shop. In every other shop it would be like FW . Shop doesn't sell FW , buying FW takes away money from customers who should be buying stuff from the shop. FW not allowed.

If you can afford 40K or any GW game, then Yes, you can afford Stronghold. All it means is you will have to save a bit more.

Question is, not can you afford, it, anyone can afford it, but are you willing to pay the price.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

8 bunkers 64. 2 macro cannons 140. 200pounds +23% tax and free shiping. 246pounds . That is a second army for w40k or 2-3 for other games .

Same here. I have a Aquila Strongpoint and a firestorm redoubt of the new stuff already (fair being fair, i bought my Aquila at 40% off NIB during a black friday sale at the LGS), but i like the other stuff too, so i'll probably be building up more.

I wait and get them on sale though, for sure. They are pricey !

Wants to, yes - a bit. Willing to, less likely. I'd like to make my own but time is precious. Still, if it's that or pay GW prices...

I bought the bunker and its 1 spure with 4 pieces. I felt extremely ripped off.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

I’ve got the Aquila Strongpoint, two Firestorm Redoubts, two sets of those turrets, and when they had the big Defensive Line box that had the bunker, and all the other stuff in a box I bought two of those. And that’s before we even get to the CoD terrain I have. And then there’s… umm… this

About half what it does now. That stuff was obtained before the dark days. Before the embargo.

Just build it. If you can't use the official materials, you can make strongholds out of just about anything. Lego blocks, just cheap clay to lay over the studs and cover it so your minis can smoothly rest on the surface. Build walls and buildings out of clay, wood, or cardboard. It won't look absolutely beautiful (unless you're familiar with the mediums), but it'll give your a fortress for cheap that can also be easily customized.

Sure, most people can afford to play Stronghold Assault.

Just not with retail priced GW terrain. Scratch building, third party models and hobby stores (Actual hobby stores, not The Hobby[TM] Store) can make a few bucks go far. And ebay.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
30k Ultramarines: 2000 pts
Bolt Action Germans: ~1200 pts
AOS Stormcast: Just starting.

Stronghold Assault isn't expensive, if you notice that the ADL is in there as a choice.
The expensive bits are the Wall of Martyrs complex, or the bastion fortress.
Even then, the WOM starts off with a normal trench, an emplacement trench and a hut.
Add some barricades and you're set. It'll come to ~£100 BNIB.

But, as noted, scratch-build and it costs you far less.

Not played it yet but I do have the rules, a wom set, 8 bastions, tonnes of aegis, a skyshield and a fortress of redemption.
So, yes. I can afford it and I do have a problem.

The pieces they released for Planetstrike are actually quite nice

I like the feel of the Wall of Matyrs; if I had the money it's something I'd definitely look into.

Google, there's a lot of guides out there. The other half is keeping an eye open for inspration. Oh you need a new heatsink for you computer? Old one can easily be an Imperial generator of some sort.

Lid of a chocolate container? Nope "skyshield".

Only limit is your imagination and what you can make of the stuff around you. Rest is trial and error. Sure you may not be as happy with it at first as you may have if you had just bought the stuff, but given enough practice you'll be able to throw together stuff you like and it'd be even better having that nice unique personal feel to it in the end. Another easy way is to look at aquarium scenery, sometimes you'll be able to find some nice pieces that way that are pretty much good to go out of the packet.

The question you should be asking is - can anyone afford to play 40k?

Stronghold assault units are just more/different options to field, like a Landraider or Riptide. And you don't need all of them either...

Ive been buying pieces of the Wall of Martyr's off and on for a while now. Each piece its self isnt too bad, heck I got one for $25. I thought they'd be fun to paint and to be used as basic terrain. Kinda help with a ruined city or the likes. Eventually I'll get the Aquilla Stronghold.

I like the detail in the models, simple to put together and its nice painting on something different than vehicles or units. But if money is a big concern you might try your hand at building your own from card stock or foam board. You might surprise yourself on how good it turns out ^_^

I could afford to buy this stuff. I generally keep about $1000 in my account for play money. The question is, why would I?
