I like rough riders and I am about to sink in about $80 so I can make some awesome cold one riding Praetorian Guard (thank you Victoria miniatures!) And now I'm worried that they are going to get the spore pod boot since they haven't had a new model in forever. What are your thoughts on this? Should I worry? Should I continue my awesome project regardless? I'm looking forward to some mogul khan madness and wiping the floor with some vanguard vets lets hope its not all for naught!

I can't see Forge World dropping their Death Riders any time soon, so you can always use DKoK rules.

Anyway, I don't think that Rough Riders are likely to disappear from the new guard codex. There's a big difference between 'haven't had a new sculpt in ages' and 'never had a sculpt to begin with'.

Do it, I love those models and if worst comes to worst ask your buddies if you can just use them as normal guardsmen on horses. I usually pay 5 points a model to add horses. A mobile firing unit is very cool. I say do it, who cares what GW does, fun first!

This. GW doesn't have to worry about any legal issues, and they can just keep selling the existing model. If anything dropping them from the codex would just be throwing away all sales of those existing models.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I have high hopes for new models for them with the new codex and maybe some updated rules. Always wanted to run them but hard to justify taking them over Vendettas, so my fingers are crossed that they get some love along with Orgyns in the next update.

Rough riders (and especially the hunting lance) are an iconic part of the Guard background. They have been in every edition and even in Epic, so its really unlikely that they would be retired at this stage.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Not to mention that Forgeworld makes models for them.
I don't see the rough riders dissapearing anytime soon.

personally, I would hold off till the new dex comes out. It might be that they are nerfed even more or there is the possibility that they just have enough other cool stuff that you would rather use, ya never know.

I wouldn't worry. Aside from some things that never got models GW has gotten much better at not removing units from their codecies. That was a big worry in the past, but not anymore. Closest thing to it now would be to have their rules gutted so badly that they become an even less capable unit. Of course those praetorian cold one riders would still look pretty cool on the table top even if the rules for them suck.

Agreed, I'd play them with nerfed rules, just as long as they still have them! Everyone needs that "model that you always play despite its ability to function because it looks cool" model. Kind of like with my unreasonable love of Space Marine Heavy Bolters or my DE Incubi.

Yeh for me it's Space Wolf Sky Claws. I just love 'em, even though they've been waaaay too points expensive ever sine 3rd Ed, and they keep getting nerfed

This is the approach I'm currently taking with my Guard. With a new codex due very soon. I'm holding off doing ANYTHING until I see what they change.

Of course that becomes frustrating if they're your main/only army

people were saying the same thing about griffons and then GW removed them from the IG book .

I think though that it's also worth considering that there's a difference between removing a unit that everyone uses and removing a unit that pretty much no one uses.

I don't think they'll get kicked out of the codex. They're old, old models, but they've at least had models, unlike the spore pod.

Griffons are still in the book. Codex Imperial Guard pg 52, 103. They're 75 points. Also, Griffons do have a sculpt

Yes, they took griffons out of the codex for a while but brought them back (along with adding two more in addition to the existing Basilisk.)

I for one LOVE my pair of Griffon Mortars. (see them in my gallery)

Regarding rough riders, the unit of rough riders I want to make are Vostroyan Bear Calvary.. hard to find a suitable bear miniature and nobody but nobody makes furry hat heads similar to the GW Vostroyan hats. (I wish Victoria Miniatures would, I'd buy a handful in a heartbeat!). Maybe one day, I'll be able to make my Bear Calvary, but we'll see.

To the OP:

I say build them! If nothing else, it'll be something that sets your army apart. I hope you'll share the WIP's also once you get started.

That's all I've got. Take it easy for now.

The bear cavalry is doable but difficult, you'll have to find an OOP Boris on bear from WHFB Kislev range, then learn to make rubber mold and cast multiples out of resin.

I already have 4 different RR units, the standard attilan on WHFB pistolier horses, tallarn on WHFB pistolier horses with Mogul conversion on WHFB mechanical horse, catachan on old metal WHFB cold ones, and the standard DKOK ones in the mail.
