I was playing a game a few days ago were a player told me poisoned gave re-rolls to wound, I though it was instant wound on the number specified, but the guy I was playing had far more experience than me so I let it slide, but I want to know, was I cheated?

You were not cheated

No, if your str is higher, it does allow Rerolls

Check page 40 last sentience of poisoned.

Next time just ask for clarification as to where that rule is in the rulebook. More experienced players sometime just assume that you should know a rule but that's why it is good to ask questions.

As long as the person you are playing against isn't a meany mcfart pants they will happily tell you where to find the rule.

Yeah, Poisoned does wound on the number shown in brackets (or a 4+ if none shown) but, if the strength of the attacker/weapon is equal to or higher than the model it's trying to wound, then it receives a re-roll to wound.

So, depending on the toughness of your model and the strength of the attacker (or his gun) you may or may not have been cheated.

I may have not been clear, I had the poisoned weapon, and my opponent said ALL it did was give re-rolls.

Can you describe the situation a bit.

1. Roll to hit, needing 3's with Space Marines, for example.
2. For each successful hit, roll to wound (needing what exactly).
3. When does the guy say that the re-roll come into play, to-hit or to-wound?

I was using my chaos spawn vs his zoantrope (Did I spell that right?) I rolled the poisned 4+ result on the mutation, I needed 3s to wound (if memory serves). I Rolled a 4, 5 and 6, I was told I did not insta wound, I just could re-roll those, which would be pointless.

Why would you reroll something that wounded?

Well S5 vs T4 = 3s to wound

so you need 3s with re rolls to wound.

But say you attacked T6, you would need to roll only 4+ instead of 5. but with no rerolls.

Yeah, you were cheated. The roll you got should have given you 3 wounds against him with a poisoned (4+) weapon.

You already rolled your 4+ regardless.

Insta-wound in the sense that all those rolls are 4+ for a poisoned 4+ weapon, meaning it doesn't matter what the target's toughness is.

Poisoned weapons always wound on a fixed number, regardless of the target's toughness. In this case the weapon is Poisoned 4+, so any to wound roll of 4+ is a wound.

It doesn't really matter though, I still killed it without taking any wounds. But still, I think it may have been an honest mistake. And I still enjoyed the game.

I doubt it was an honest mistake simply because poisoned weapons are known more for their wound rule than the re-roll, but it's good that you're so relaxed about it and still enjoyed the game.

Actually he played it right. You would need a 3+ to wound with rerolls to wound in that case. Not that it mattered in this case as you wounded with those three rolls either way.

Are you thinking of WH fantasy, poison, when you say insta wound? Because 40K always requires a roll to wound.

Your saying that instead of needing a 3+ to wound he would need a 4+ to wound because he rolled poison?

I think he might be conflating "always wounds" with bypassing saves, much in the same way people assume Instant Death does. It doesn't bypass saves, all it does is modify the to wound roll.

From what I read, this is probably how the OP was seeing it. Very confusing set of posts on the OPs part though.

But I would think that if the weapon is now a poison weapon, then yes you follow the poison rule and disregard your strength vs their toughness. So in this case it worked against him, but them's the breaks.

"unless a lower result would be required" so no you dont go from wounding on a 3+ or 2+ up to a 4+

"In addition, if the Strength of the wielder is the same or higher than the Toughness of the victim, the wielder must re-roll failed rolls To Wound in close combat."

Meaning if he had failed he MUST re-roll the failed to wounds.

Also the wording is messssed up as it refers mostly to close combat. while trying to shoehorn in shooting weapons with poison.

This thread is very confusing but please reread the poison usr (the end of the rule specifically). Which means in this case your strength is greater than the targets toughness so you wound on the normal roll (3+) with a reroll to wound.

Your way would mean that poison 6+ would always be a negate thing to have and nobody would ever use gargoyles.

Yes, I didn't know about the "unless a lower result would be required" part. I never use poison weapons. But now I have to ask, what was the original question then? I was under the assumption that the OP's opponent was not allowing him wounds and telling him that Poisoned only gave him a re-roll, but it seems that what he rolled would have been wounds regardless of the Poisoned rule.

The original problem was that his Chaos Spawn (S5) rolled a mutation that gave it Poison USR.

then attacked in CC a zorthrop (T4).

he rolled to wound a 4 5 and 6 with his attacks

His opponent stated he only gets a reroll to wounds instead of instant wounds which is the very confusing part.

The way both sides have stated it is probably where everyone is getting confusing but in the end it was played correctly. the spawn would get a 3+ to wound with rerolls failed wounds against the zorn.

I actually knew this, but now I understand why Hellfire rounds are specifically S1.

My question basically boils down to this; If I have poison(4+) and I rolled a 4, 5, and 6, does he get a save? Thanks for all the help btw.

Yes, he does. Making attacks is divided into 3 steps: Roll to Hit, Roll to Wound, Roll Saves. The only thing the Poison USR effects is step 2, Roll to Wound. It does nothing to his ability to make saves (by itself).

Well, that clears everything up.

Yes, he gets his save. There are only a few situations in which you bypass saves; poison isn't one of them.
