Title says it all really. I'm looking to do some free handing of space stuff on some models. And I'm looking for a good way to do random heavy to light speckling that can be used as stars? I was thinking of taking a toothbrush with paint and then using a knife to flick the paint but was wondering what else people have for ideas. I have an airbrush(badger krome) and all sorts of various hobby/crafting tools so I can probably do the technique if you got something good.

And some, I assume, are good people."
I've only ever done it via the "toothbrush flick" method, but I've seen an airbrush used, as well (can't find the tutorial video I watched, sadly). Basically, you take a piece of stiff card and hold it slightly in front of the nozzle, angled away from you at about 45 degrees. Aim this combination at your surface and spray at the card edge, using moderately high pressure. This causes a buildup of paint that gets blasted off sporadically in large (compared to properly atomized paint, at least) droplets. Sort of like forcing the speckling that comes from nozzle blockage, without actually messing with your gun.

use the airbrush if you want speckles , you hold some trash object up against the nozzle at an angle and spray, the paint pools up on the thing and spits off the end in a controllable fashion.
Ofen used for a 'granite' effect painting.
