If you want to have fun. Dont play people who are in it for themselves. If you play with the goal of making it fun for your opponent and they do the same for you then its gonna be a great game. Of course there are lots you can do as well to mitigate the negatives in
40k.
Give this a read. I have been working on how to solve the problems in
40k that plague some people and its boiled down to this

If you play with the info in this link in mind, you will find that there is no room for the broken scary stuff. Im gonna try make it a trend in some of the more stubborn players at my club tonight buy using this as a guide for my campaign.
So what im saying is, these super heavy armies and so forth are only a problem when you play
40k with large battles, or large open battles etc, which sounds fun but in practice should be something you dont always do. There is lots of pressure from
GW and the players to play games of 2000 and upwards and try shove everything you can in the list, along with taking the focus away from terrain. So instead of fearing these changes and complaining, try fixing them so you and your friends can move on and enjoy the game.
Super heavies are fun, but just like most fun things, best used in moderation.
So do not fear. Work with a friend, find out what your problems are (with the game...) and work around it. You will find problems like this disappear.
