Hey, I'm a bit new and wondering if I have to paint my Imperial guard a certain preset colour scheme or if I can paint them however I want.

You can paint them up however you want to do them. If thats modern military colors, or rainbow, your free to choose.

Oh stop complaining, its for the greater good... Now get in the box!

Oh thank you so Much, I had painted mine a Blue and black/gray scheme and was worried I'd have to repaint.

Thats the great thing about warhammer.

You could literally have a neon pink imperial guard army and it would fit in the fluff for some crazy planet with weird rituals about what colors they choose that was the result of some crazy planetary governor from 2 millenia ago.

People who stopped buying GW but wont stop bitching about it are the vegans of warhammer

Yep, same thing with marines, just go with what you want, make some background, or don't. Pretty open and made that way so hobbyists can use imagination for their armies.

A couple of months back I took part in a competition that focused one painting IG, its great inspiration and they all look cool. (and yes one guy did a really high quality pink and purple guardsman)

So yeah, go with what you like and welcome to the best 15 minutes of your life soldier

You can paint them any color you want. If you get outside where the Fanboy's think it should be, you'll catch hell from them, but personally I think its worth it.

That's the great thing about this hobby...you can make it your own. You've started with a color scheme that you like. Then at some point an event will grant bonus points for a written back story...and you will create your own fluff. Soon you will be naming your guys...even painting their names on the base (and for some reason Cpl Sam Slade ALWAYS ends up surviving every game...your lucky model).
Then you will slip the surly bonds of sanity and start talking to Cpl Slade...and he will talk back.
Then you will tire of IG and buy some Orks.
And paint them orange.....

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

I agree with the above, however, i would wait to see what the new IG (or AM) codex has, they may have some weird/ funky new rule that will change the cover save depending on what army your guys are painted (think red ones go fasta) it sounds lame, and i hope it doesn't happen, but knowing GW's narrarative trend for writing codexes, it's not that far fetched.

I wouldn't worry too much about that.

The color of the models matters less than the units and equipment you choose.

An unusual colour scheme, or unconventional camouflage pattern, will make your troops stand out from 'the norm' - so long as their performance matches their enhanced appearance.

And yes, troops wearing red DO go faster.

Having seen models painted solid blue that the player said had a red paint job, I cant really see this as an issue.

All of the orks thought it was red, they had selective color-blindness.
