In preparation for my new hubble-provided mats coming, I wanted to do something with the asteroid tokens. The modeller in me isn't happy having cardboard terrain, and asteroids play such an important part in the game that I wanted to do something special. I was inspired by Panic's wrecks, (there's a page on them in this forum), but wanted some actual asteroids. I started by getting hold of a set of the excellent acrylic cut outs of the existing tokens made by games of war:
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Games-of-War/162862513753764, added some large GW flight stems, and went from there.
I wanted them to follow the silhouette of the asteroid tokens, and I think I've been fairly successful with that. I also wanted to keep the feeling of a loose jumble of rock, which is easier said than done, but I think I was as close as it's possible to be when making a solid object. Another goal was to make them lightweight but sturdy - I didn't want them to be top heavy and falling over. They have a foam core and paper mache inner, and a wood-filler shell for strength. If anyone thinks a tutorial might be useful, let me know and I'll put one together.

Would anyone have an issue playing against these in a tournament setting? The bases are identical in shape to the cardboard tokens.

Edit: Tutorial as requested by some Facebook peeps. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/587524.page#6681297

I think those look great and wouldn't have any problems playing against them.

I'd have no issue playing them, my only concern is "what happens when you land on an asteroid?" Not just bumping it, but being on it? The cardboard ones are great for that purpose, and that's the only reason I haven't moved up to 3D asteroids.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I'd have the cardboard ones in case, but you should be able to remove a ship peg and fly under it most of the time, much like you do when physical ships overlap without bases overlapping.

Edit: and if you hit a stem, you are a bad pilot!

From an "FFG Official Tournament" standpoint the size and shape of the asteroid itself is not important, you can basically use whatever you want, however the base of the asteroid is suppose to be the same size and shape as the ones that come in the box set

That being said I'd have no problem playing against them, just adding in the above as you asked about them being tournament legal

The bases are acrylic copies of the original tokens. They match up perfectly.

Yeah,
They look amazing!
Well done.

In games you can place the 3D ones on top of the card tokens,
Making it easy to remove for overlaps.

I love that yours are 3D versions of the asteroids on the card.

Love them, with what you said about the bases I think they're perfect! Nice work!

I played it with my son, probably the wrong way, but I just can't get over the dice...when I roll them I'm like, huh?

Crush your enemies, see them driven before you and to hear the lamentations of the women.

I'm waiting for more flight stands to arrive to finish of the last two, then I'm going to make a second batch. I may take moulds of the next batch before I paint them!

The dice take a minute to get used to huh? They are a pretty cool system once worked out though.

So my custom printed mats arrived, and i couldn't resist taking some pics of the tricked out table.

First one is a 3x3' of the gas cloud in the Carina nebula. I'm really pleased with how this one turned out.

Second one is a 6x3' of Galaxy m106. This one wasn't quite so successful. I suspect the print quality from the banner place wasn't quite up to scratch, because the file I sent was ultra high resolution, but the print is a bit grainy. Still, it'll do for the occasional big game.

I really like the first mat. That is certainly one I would like to play on. It being mostly starfield with nebula not fully dominating the whole mat makes it win for me.

The second one feels off due to the lack of stars and replacement of a single galaxy..it doesn't capture that 'in space' feel and instead looks like what it originally was...simply a 2D picture of a galaxy.

Very cool! Where did you have the mats printed? I also really like the first one.

The second is not bad at all and I think could be cool for scenario like games.

Thanks for sharing the pics

I had them printed at a banner printing place called vinyl banners printing. Original huh? They were doing 3 for 2, so I convinced them that a 3x3 and a 6x3 were the same as 3 3x3's.

If anyone wants the prepped images, I can provide a link to my Dropbox, however I'd urge you to take a look at the Hubble gallery. The choice is staggering. I have about 3 more waiting for my x wing league to take off so I can order them...
