What is your favorite army fluff wise. I don't care about picking the strongest army, or anything like that. Just say what you like specifically about that army.

My favorite is Tau, and yes I do play them. My favorite thing about them isn't the battlesuits, nor the heavy weaponry. It's that out of all the races that are currently fighting, Tau seem to be the only ones trying to develop better technology. The Imperium has been stuck the way they are for millennium, Chaos is in the same boat. Tyranid and Chaos Demons don't have technology to begin with, Orks we have no idea why the hell it works other than it just does. Dark ldar and Eldar have been floating too long on their own laurels, and are only now waking up the proverbial "big guns." And Necrons have been sleeping, not doing anything. Nobody else has tried to make anything new to use against anyone for thousands of years. It took someone long enough to move forward.

Dark Eldar. They've carved out a niche where they can live pretty much indefinitely, the successful among them being the the 'most immortal' of the mortal races. They're largely impervious to the greatest threats to a civilization (such as Tyranids), gleefully sullying themselves with every form of vile excess they can think of, laughing all the way at their straight-laced kin, condemned to a slow lingering death simply because they were too timid to grasp at the visceral eternal life that was within their grasp.

Tau-same reason as Jancoran,

Dark Eldar for the fluff, to me they really give off that feeling of something ancient and evil.

IG for the fact that there the common man fighting pretty much anything you can think of.

Tyranids are my favorite fluff. In 3rd when tidzilla was a good list, it was also really fun to play.

Now my favorite army to play is BA, even if it means playing 40k hard mode like a masochist. If I can beat I wanna be the guy, I can handle that. Mainly, I wanted an army that felt FAST, but not made of paper like Dark Eldar.

I mainly like them fluff wise for the death company, red thirst, Mephiston's over the top beginnings, and Dante. The whole deal with Calgar and Vulkan both getting out of the way for him to lead their combined forces on Armageddon made me feel like a boss for being a BA player.

I haven't seen much 40K fluff I actually like really, so the fluff doesn't have all that much to do with what my favourite army is.

But it has to be the 'Nids of course, because I like the idea of an all devouring swarm flooding through the galaxy.

They're 40K's army ants, and I like that.

Plus they look cool.

Well, I'm an Eldar player, but at the moment I find them a bit boring to play with their mighty Serpents.
Therefore, I play Necrons in tournaments and Apoc battles.

Sisters of Battle. I love the idea of a bunch of religious fanatic soldiers that will gladly die for the Emprah! For me the Medieval gothic zealotry appeals to me as a hack historian. Its like the dark ages on acid. That was what originally got me interested in 40k as a wee lad in the first place.

Imperial Guard all the way, what's more manly than fighting daemons, alien killing machines and traitors, wielding only a rifle and bayonet whilst wearing cardboard armour. Nothing.
There's just a huge variety of fighting styles in the guard that I haven't seen in any faction in 40k. There's blitzkrieg tactics, air cavalry, line infantry, massed artillery. You just can't beat it

Tyranids. The endless, truly alien tide and unstoppable enemy without. That which is truly other, rather than merely humanoid and is completely unshaped by humanity.

That which cannot be denied or stopped, and all your action will only delay the inevitable.

Either Dark Angels, or anything Chaos.

Dark Angels are everything that's awesome about Astartes, but more grimdark. I also like those robes and all that. Looks so damn cool!

Chaos is just brilliant. Lots of creative stuff there, and a lot of space to come up with your own things.

I started playing this game in 1994, when I purchased the brand new Eldar Codex. I have always liked elves, and when I found space elves, I flipped my sh*t. I bought the codex and the Avatar model and have been an Eldar mark since then. I still own my original Avatar painted in it's horrible, painted by a 14 year old, glory. lol

Back in those days there were no Dark Eldar, instead we had exodites and such. It was an awesome time to play (especially for an Eldar player!). I love the whole "We created Slaanesh" thing and tie in with the old ones.

My understanding of the fluff back then was there was a loose tie between WHFB and 40k, and it was through the old ones, and the eye of terror. The Black Library, and harlequins... man I could go on forever.

A lot of the fluff has changed in 40k as they retro fit everything in and create "new" things and make them old... but my mind is still based in the post-rogue trader days... when things were still the wild west. It felt more raw, and more organic.

Black Templar – The most dedicated crazy fighting force in the galaxy. They are fixated on the Eternal crusade and gave Guilliman the big F U when he tried to tell them to fall in line and organize according to some metric system. Zeal is its own reason! They have some of the best quotes, and a really cool Knightly feel to them. They have a true hatred for anything they don’t think is pure or righteous, and honestly walk that line of good and evil. If this were an DnD they would hit that Lawful Neutral alignment square on the head. Break the law, eat a chainsword.

Orks – The zaniest army in the galaxy. Again, looking at an alignment perspective they are Chaotic Neutral. I have always been very ambivalent on what is exactly good and what is exactly evil, and have never been able to really nail down where one ends and the other begins. But what I do understand is law and Chaos, and I feel these two armies fit dichotomy the best. Even the army called “Chaos” has more order and structure than the Orks do. The Daemons are pretty Chaotic, but they also have that evil twist to them.

The cool thing about 40k is the term "Good" in the D&D sense doesn't really apply.

I see nothing sinister in Tau. They are a benevolent and well adjusted race with a...compelling... governing body but so what. Every race has compelling politicians. That they peacefully assimilate and improve things where they've gone is cool. In a galaxy at war, isn't it comforting that SOMEONE doesn't want to sacrifice, eat, strip mine, or otherwise exterminate you as its first and last instincts? Colonialism and even empirialism in theTau way Iis faaaaaaar more benevolent.

Imperial Guard and Space Marines in general. I always support the human factions in sci fi, I love their designs and their heroism. Guard are normal men who tackle the abnormal world with cold steel, courage, and liberal amounts of high explosive. Marines give up their humanity so others can live free from death by horrible space monsters. yes the imperium isn't the best place to live but its their homes and they're going to die defending them.

LATD. Ok, they're not technically an army anymore, but they used to be, and it's not that hard to make one again with the alliance rules.
An army of downtrodden thieves, mutants, rogue psykers, and whores, using world shattering occult powers and scavenged weapons to overthrow the system that has oppressed and marginalized them. Throw in some spies, traitorous guardsmen, and highly trained assassins. What's not to love? It's a great army if you like conversions, variety, sticking it to the man, and rooting for the underdog.

You've got me a smidgen lost on the logic here... "I don't like playing the debatedly strongest army in the game, so I instead play another debatedly strongest army."

To answer the question, the Eldar are what really got me hooked to 40k fluff, especially the stories about Eldrad.
