As we all know GW is launching a new website and there site at the moment is down. But the point of this thread is the picture of the model sprue in the right hand corner, is this a new model that could come out with the new site? I don't recognise the sprue.

Does anyone else recognise it?

Yeah, and the sword sheath has bigger skulls on it now. Before they were tiny little skulls that were barely noticeable.

Here's the new version painted

The Storm Bolter pose looks pretty stupid, to be honest. Not particularly won over by any desire to try and get this new model.

There are a bunch of details hat are slightly off. Most obvious ones being that the new model is wearing a loincloth, and has an iron halo, while there are other smaller details like the right leg knee plate, the addition of rondels and a rope across the chest, the lack of skulls on the bolter clip, the addition of a gem to the scabard and a change of pommel.

I'm sure I could find another dozen small detail changes.

Clearly this is a new sculpt made to resemble old model, not the old model redone in finecast.

Honestly I thought that was obvious, experically with the larger skulls on the sword and the image of the sprue...

Don't they have like 4-5 captins in a pose like that. I remember BA like that.

I think they have a base model in CAD with that basic pose making it easier to make new versions of. They still did a fair amount of work with some of the new stuff for this guy (and they swapped which arm is holding the gun from the other Captain model design).

Replace the stormboler, turn the head a little and he would be a pretty spiffy model. As is he looks like he is posing for a photograph within a 30 second notice.

You mean standing?

The bulky suit leaves very little variety to your passive standing around officer-stance.

That skull-clip is awesome though. I was wondering where GW would manage to stick more skulls.

Probably set the timer on the servo skull and has quickly posed before the shutter clicks....

As someone who loves the model it's a remake of, I dig what they did. It's like when they did the model of the 2nd ed box art captain for Games Day. I appreciate retro revivals, and, well, I needed the IG codex plus some other toys anyway.

No I mean posed that way. All the versions of that BA death mask capting look the same and there is 2 or 3 of him.

Captain Tycho came out in 2nd edition, and the Games Day captain this dude is based on is from 1991, and the Blood Angel captain with the deathmask and similarly sassy pose is from 1989. They're all differently proportioned than this new model, so I wouldn't say they're building off a template or whatever. I do think it's kind of funny they used the pose so much in the early 90s, but I think that has a lot to do with the comparatively simple casting techniques they had access to at the time. This guy's just a throwback to that.

That's an interesting theory. I wonder if there are other things that would support the idea that casting technology just didn't allow them to do certain things in the past that they can do now.

Like, a lot of the old models used to be hugging their guns right up against their chest, which was probably a result of single-piece instead of multi-part casting.

That's why a lot of old models look very flat. I've been painting retro models exclusively for the past 6 months or so, and it's really given me an appreciation for the detail and undercuts you see in modern plastic models. A lot of the old models were just simple 2-part molds, which resulted in the flatness, while new models are tooled to high heaven and there's very few voids in detail. I love both eras of model design, but there are definitely some limitations on the older era.
