I'm always trying to figure out ways to make my all black armor Raven Guard more visually interesting. My FLGS has a winter themed ROB board, so I decided to try and make some winterized models. I wanted to try and use the "white wash" effect that is usually used for winter camo by WW2 modelers and see if I can give it a "covered in frost/ice" look. I've seen models with snow on them, and I really haven't found a look that I liked with that technique. So I was hoping that icing the model would make it look like it fits on a snow base instead of being a non-snow model walking in the snow.
I don't know if it was the hair spray or if it was the matte varnish I airbrushed on top of it, but something caused the white wash to crackle...which I think helps with the whole "frozen surface" look.
Overall I think I'm happy with it and I can see this becoming the look for the rest of the army. It gives the "all black" of the Raven Guard some interesting appeal. My biggest fault is the writing, it ended up washing away on the front of the dread. I was going to fix that but forgot about it before I took the pictures.
Any thought, suggestions, feedback?

It looks fantastic. An army of that would be worth seeing.

It's definitely an interesting look for Raven Guard and looks properly frosted. For me, though, this model straddles the fine line for me for a model that I think has been weathered to the point of excess. It may be personal preference, but this hyper-realistic weathering detracts from the model for me and makes the entire model look much too disheveled and messy. If that's the look you were going for, then you've done a great job. But it's just not my taste.

I hate weathering and hate snow bases. Usually because they look like butt.
This is amazing! Totally dynamite. Now I want to start a black army so I can do this. Seriously awesome work here. The iced-over look works WAY better on the snow base.

Looks like hell froze over, in a gamer amazing way. This is incredible-there definitely aren't enough frozen 40K models out there, and I hope to see more of yours!

Here is the tutorial I used for the white wash:
http://modelarmour.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1524%3Ahairspray-whitewash&catid=35%3Abuild-features&Itemid=59
The crackle was accidental, so I just hope that I can replicate it on the next models as long as I do everything the same.

The snow base gives the effect of the snow melting away and the greenery poking through rather than the icy wasteland I think you're trying to portray, and I don't think the model fits the base... Love the model, love the base but I'm not sure they go together too well.

I was trying to go by the winter we had here. If it is too cold you usually don't end up with frost, since the moisture in the air is too solid to begin with. But if you are hanging near the freezing point and then drop the moisture in the air will freeze on solid surfaces. Those are the times that you see frost and ice on your car, not the thick of winter.
But I admit that I may have to much "real world" logic into this...
