If I play 40k against some army that's really shooty, like tau, should I play something really assaulty or something equally shooty with an SM army, since SMs are very flexible in tactical roles.

right now in 6th I would say shooty. Your assault is going to get crippled by 15" rapid-fire, followed by multiple overwatch (supporting fire) and then given the killing blow, now that every tau gets photon grenades for free (no bonus attacks on your charge). Did I mention random charge ranges and Cadre Fireblades or Ethereals giving lots of extra shots?
Yeah. Best to pound the suckers from afar (your average sniper scouts can outrange tau firewarriors), whirlwinds and TFCs can ruin the day of any static Tau gunline, and Grav Centurions can cripple Riptides and Crisis teams with one volley. Best to attach Tigurius to them to give em Prescience and some other divination powers

Id say the weakness to tau is assault, synergy, and most importantly LOS blocking Terrain.

But you can't ensure terrain, rule number one of tau in my opinion is take out their marker lights, then their big things, then youll be fine.

Saying that tau is weak to assault is like saying charging grizzlies can be stopped by the timely intervention of a platoon of heavily armed leprauchans.
In 6th edition, at least, the way you beat shooty is with more shooty, or shooty in a different kind of way than the other person does.

So wrong. Assault IS a viable answer, but you can't have ONLY assault, you need some artillery to soften up the target and force the shooty to spread himself thin.
People just don't get that pure assault of massive blenders fail, while multiple small assault units backed by artillery WILL get the job done, as against the shooter, superkiller units are just wasteful overkill, and something as simple as 5 assault marines can wipe out an properly softened and isolated shooter squad.

If you can assault, go for it, but an all-in assault is not a reliable strategy against Tau if you aren't running Chaos Daemons or Tyranid Skyblight Swarm.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

You can't beat tau at their own game unless you tau lol space marine army in drop pods, drop half your units in flame some guys, melts some suits and tanks. If if just a few guys get to combat after all their shooting is done, that's enough to take them down

Assaulty. You can certainly do some damage to Tau with shooting, but the Tau are the kings of the ranged combat.
Barring the exception of Tau-Tau matchups, I've never seen a Tau player defeated without the victor taking it to fisticuffs at some point.

Hmm, necrons and eldar can play the range game.
But tau has a 3 big weaknesses,
1) crappy LD
2) crappy BS
3) crappy I (like really bad)
If you can use any of these against them it will make the game that much easier for you.

I think the biggest weakness of pure Tau is their lack of mobility, if you can keep them bottled up in their deployment zone while you go to ground (in both the tactical and the rules sense) on objectives you can win despite only having 10% of your army while they have 90% of theirs.
Granted, not the most helpful advice if you're playing Purge the Alien or they have some Eldar allies with Guardian Jetbikes.
