Curious if anyone has heard our has any predictions to what the replacement starter set will bring.

Would love to see them do the necron Eldar rivalry.

Thoughts?

I have heard BA vs Orks. That seems to be the consensus.

A bit ago there were some rumors about CWE vs AM which would be amazing. Those two armies have a huge need for plastic models, especially CWE who still has almost their entire line in finecast and old sculpts.

I wouldn't get my hopes up about Eldar/Necrons. They're always pushing SM.

We don't even know if there is going to be one. 40k Radio said that 7th edition would be a 'book only' release, which could be interpreted to mean that there will not be a new starter box. Some less reliable rumour-mongers have said that Dark Vengance will be re-issued with a different book inside but the same models.

If there is a new starter set, I think that Blood Angels and Orks are the most likely armies to see in it. Dark Eldar, Space Wolves, Astra Militarum and Necrons also seem quite possible. Eldar, Tyranids or another space marine chapter are all unlikely, but not impossible. For all we know it could be the Inquisition vs. Genestealer Cultists.

Rumour-mongers have said 'orks vs. blood angels' and 'guard vs. eldar', but I wouldn't put much faith in them.

0% it would be guard. It's always good guys vs. bad guys, and the good guys is always some version of space marines.

Space Wolves is the most obvious guess, as they're older and most in need of a new codex like DA was before DV. On the bad guy side, let's just ask ourselves who hasn't been in a starter kit yet?

Eldar and Tau, by my reckoning. Neither needs a codex, but eldar badly needs new models, and I could easily imagine them using starter-kit snap-togethers as a bridge towards full plastics, just like they did for the new CSM.

If history is any guide (and they do a new starter release for 7th ed, which I highly suspect they will - just how many more people need DA armies?), a few months after the new edition drops, we're going to see a new starter box with space wolves and eldar. Less likely blood angels and eldar, or either SW/BA and tau.

Just because they haven't done it before, doesn't mean they can't do it in the future.

I agree that they will almost certainly have 'good guys' vs someone and the most likely candidates for the good guys are marines of some kind and the most likely candidates for 'someone' would be a fairly obviously villainous race.

However, it's got to be at least somewhat possible that they have another human faction or even one of the more sympathetic alien races as the 'good guys' or one of the less glaringly evil bad-guy armies as their opposition.

Blood Angels are in an even worse situation, aren't they? I'd say they were just as likely as Space Wolves.

Why can't GW repeat themselves? They have before, since orks have been in two previous starter sets. It also seems a bit odd to argue that the 'good guys' will always be represented by the same force they have been in the past, but their opposition have to be original.

Necrons and Daemons haven't been in starter sets yet either. They are also rather easier to cast as the villains than Tau or Eldar, if we are assuming they stick to a 'good guys vs. bad guys' theme. Eldar do offer some exciting opportunities for new models though. Make a Saim-Hann style force with a jetbike farseer, jetbike warlocks, restyled jetbike guardians and some shining spears and I suspect that it will sell rather well. Even one of those kits would make the box attractive to a lot of people.

Do you really think that Eldar would be a good idea for a starter set? I mean, okay, they're one of the 'iconic' 40k races, but don't forget that they're selling like hot cake and they're one of the strongest armies around. GW doesn't need to sell the same amount of Eldar minis at huge discount(because starter sets are always very cheap when it comes to model prices). Of course it'd be a good way to introduce new jetbikes or aspects, but I don't think they want to sell either in a starter box.

Necrons aren't a safe bet either - aside from Sisters they're one of the most obscure armies to the 'outside world'. Everyone recognizes Space Marines, Chaos, Eldar, Orks and Tyranids as they all fill their specific trope niches. Necrons are some weird neutral-evil force that appears out of nowhere shooting everyone and everything that moves.

Daemons on the other hand, as it was mentioned somewhere, could make bad PR impression(and all their models are pretty in plastic nowadays).

I too think it'll be Orks again, probably with bikes this time. As for the other force.. unfortunately it'll be either BA or SW with ridiculous amount of little chapter details that would be a pain to scrap off if you don't want models you don't really need.

I said that space marines were repeated as the good guys, but there hasn't been repeats unless you consider all the way back to second ed. They still have 3 space marine armies that haven't made it into the starter pack yet, and that's only counting the ones that currently have a codex (they could add more in the future). By comparison, a single guard codex seems unlikely to make it into the starter, especially when they are least in need for new rules or models.

I could possibly see Demons, were it not for CSM being in the current one. I could maybe see an 8th ed GK vs. Demons.

And eldar aren't good guys, no more than tau are. "Forces of order" is just something that eldar players tell themselves to feel less bad about being a dying race of murdering xenos.

The ork dex is due soon anyway supposedly so orks would make sense. I will likely buy the starter if so as i have a small ork force and had plans to do a da/ba force at some stage.

I thought it had been confirmed that Dark Vengeance was being retained, just with a different mini-rulebook. This edition change has come around pretty quick and it doesn't seem like there has been time to tool up for a whole new range of new push-fits.

I'm thinking it will be space wolves vs dark eldar or wolves vs crons. Cron plastics are cheap to make and so are marines. Space wolves could even get a new plastic hq or two this way.

Another idea could be gk vs de. This would encourage buyers of soon to be 6th edition armies.

Tau vs orks would be an awesome way to present to new users that armies should be good at one thing (shooting vs assault).

The recurring rumor is that it's Orks vs. Blood Angels but we don't even know if there will be a 7th ed box set, or if that's what it'll actually be. I don't think anyone reputable has pushed that rumor.

Personally, I've always wanted a Steel Legion vs. Orks starter set themed around Armageddon, but that'll never happen.
