Sad news indeed if confirmed. Doesn't seem to be anything up on the BBC yet but if Reuters are going with it then I would suspect it is verified.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/05/13/us-people-giger-idUSKBN0DT0HX20140513

(Reuters) - Swiss surrealist artist H.R. Giger who designed the monster and revolutionary sci-fi sets for the film "Alien" has died, Swiss television reported on Tuesday. He was 74.

Giger, the son of a chemist, was born Hans Rudolf in the eastern Swiss town of Chur in 1940. He died on Monday from injuries he obtained after suffering a fall, SRF said.

Famous for creating the otherworldly creature in Ridley Scott's 1979 horror film "Alien", Giger was awarded an Oscar for Best Achievement in Visual Effects in 1980.

Having studied architecture and industrial design in Zurich, Giger's work explores the relationship between the human body and the machine, and he created nightmarish dreamscapes in a style he described as "biomechanical."

In 1998, he opened his own museum in Gruyeres in central Switzerland, which displays many of his own paintings, sculptures and film designs as well as his private art collection, including works by Salvador Dali.

What a shame, I really enjoyed his art and his influence, the Aliens films obviously, but also in Species.

Well that's a thing that transpired I suppose. I quite enjoyed a lot of his work. Darn shame to see him go. His style was really unique.

He definitely was a source of inspiration in a lot of my artwork. Sad to see him go, but at least he'll be leaving behind an incredible body of work.

Massive inspiration, created the best movie monster of all time.

It's worth checking out his various interviews on the Alien boxset. I always felt that it was a poor choice by James Cameron not to involve him in the process of Aliens.

Sadly missed, let's hope his creation gets back on track to its routes.

Probably work

Saw it on HuffPost: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/05/13/hr-giger-dead-alien-artist_n_5314408.html

I'd call that confirmed at this point. That sucks. I was actually just looking at some of his stuff last night. Giger was one of my favorite madmen, and I mean that with a particular level of genuine respect.

I read about that earlier today. Definitely a major loss to the sci-fi and surrealist art.

Sad news indeed.
I'd not seen anything new artwise from him for a long time but there's not a month that goes by when I don't either pick up one of his many art books that I own for a browse and some inspiration or watch a movie that he was involved with.

I hope that amongst the piles of paper and notes that he's designed his own mausoleum, crypt or necropolis.
I'm sure that such a thing would be stunning.

RIP.

I visited his museum in Gruyere. With my mum. The contrast between his work and the extremely picturesque panorama of this region of Switzerland was stunning. He was a brilliant artist. Rest in peace.

He was absolutely fantastic, and truly unique. It's a shame to have him die like this, but he will remain an inspiration to many.

One of the greatest masters of horror and shock is gone - may he rest in peace. Hopefully they give him a Giger burial.

Easily one of the most influential figures in my childhood. I was (and still am) absolutely obsessed with the Alien films and I've looked through the Necronomicon more times than I can count. Giger was an amazing man and a brilliant artist. The world has lost a great artist today and I hope the times remember him fondly.

I quite like this Daily Mash piece.

http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/arts-entertainment/h-r-giger-created-cinemas-only-non-gak-alien-2014051486567

SWISS artist H.R. Giger, who died this week, created the only alien in cinema history that is not a bit gak.

Film critic Mary Fisher said: “Before Alien, and indeed after Alien, extra-terrestrials in films were uniformly spank.

“E.T. looks like a sunbed-addicted nan, the things in Close Encounters were just big fetuses and although Star Wars had some cool aliens in the cantina scene that’s counterbalanced by the ewoks, the gakkiest of all gak aliens.

“Independence Day aliens – gak. Men In Black aliens – gak. Predator – clearly a body builder with two stuck-on chicken wings for a mouth.

“None of them compares to an eyeless armoured demon with acid blood and a hydraulic fanged-penis mouth. That is just so admirably fethed up.”
