Pyres of Petod: Frozen Feint

Welcome to round 10 of Pyres of Petod!
If you are interested in seeing the other battles that will shape the Petod system then go check out the master link list thread;
Pyres of Petod: Chaos Ascendant

If you’d like to see the prequel campaign that led to these current dark days, then you’ll want to go and read Counter Assault on Saios: The Search for the Elendil Thrakul (I personally recommend the Sigismund’s Iron Fist batrep, as I think it’s one of our best)
Counter Assault on Saios: The Search for the Elendil Thrakul

However, if you've already seen that, or just want to witness a dangerous skirmish in a frozen encampment, then read on!

The Opening Fluff
Spoiler:

Captain Harry ‘Flash’ Paget was depressed. Not even the copious assets of his aide, Lieutenant Linda Eppledorfer (of whom, Harry was fairly certain, seemed to possess mystical ability to somehow squeeze into her uniform without it shredding off her) could brighten him up at the moment.

‘The magos investigation team would also like to note at this juncture that no eyes were found on the scene.’

Cogheads were the worst, they always wrote the most boring and unimaginative reports known in the Imperium. It was like they were driven to try to turn them into the most mind-numbing drivel possible. Harry glanced up at Benny, his Ratling aide, who was currently discussing the finer point of head shots with some of his fellows while they used some “requisitioned” engine fuel and empty Basilisk shell casings to create some sort of pressure device which Benny assured him would create an alcohol that would ‘kick like a grox’. Lieutenant Eppledorfer had noted that in service to the Emperor it was best to keep a clear head, which was rather the opposite conclusion Harry had always held.

‘The magos investigation team would also like to note at this juncture that no eyes were found on the scene.’

It was odd what sort of thing would jump out at you from a report. In a general sense Harry had rather liked his posting when he’d been transferred to the Ice World of Avitas. The place was quite boring, and there was little better to do most days than stay in your bunk under quite a few heavy blankets, and try to persuade a few of the more shapely female junior officers that shared body heat was the best cure for what ailed them, and then see what else you could share, by jove! There were few things better than exploring he hidden shapes underneath those boring Imperial khakis, that was for certain. That said, he had learned that though Catachan women did seem to appreciate the extra option for warmth they were rather a bit too physical for him to partake…well…more than twice a month. He rubbed at a bruised shoulder absently.

‘The magos investigation team would also like to note at this juncture that no eyes were found on the scene.’

So, though he had liked his posting, he still seemed to get some odd jobs that didn’t sit well. Like this one. Something had been going…screwy with the listening posts, and those posts were pretty important since they were literally the only thing around that could possibly warn the prison complex buried beneath Avitas’ frozen surface of any incoming attacks. Without them, the Imperial forces there would be blind.

‘The magos investigation team would also like to note at this juncture that no eyes were found on the scene.’

So, sure enough, it fell to ol’ honest Harry ‘Flash’ to see what could be sorted out about the affair. He’d been given men, equipment, and even a few rather psychotic Mechanicum tech adepts loaded out for war as well as work, and been told to go see what was what. They’d even given him a report of the last few sites that had been investigated. Pretty bland stuff, a few bodies had been found, uncertain what had killed them, boring information about the internal temperatures and decomposition of the bodies. But there had been one sentence that had lodged in his head, and one sentence that left him with that scratchy feeling on his palms that something was ‘not right’ about this mission.

‘The magos investigation team would also like to note at this juncture that no eyes were found on the scene.’

Harry was fairly certain that the whole affair would end poorly, his only prayer was that he could come out the other end with his head, and eyes, all still properly attached.

The Rules of Battle

Spoiler:

With Mother’s Day abounding and a wedding in the family the day before, there was a lot of family about, and Thor was given charge of some nieces and nephews again and told to basically occupy their time for a few hours. Well…what can one do that takes ‘a few hours’?

Warhammie time, boyz and girlz! Each side is controlled by a team of two little generals who, mostly, made all their strategic choices themselves. I worked as rules arbiter and photographer.

1000 points per side
4x4 table

The objectives are the 3 Quonset huts, any troop choice may claim them, any non-vehicle may contest.

Kirst’takiss Maerret takes a close up, she’s a little sensitive and shy, so be gentle around her…and don’t leave your eyes unprotected.

The Setup
Spoiler:

The battle will take place at one of the isolated listening posts on Avitas’ surface. Most of the planet’s population lives below ground in the vast prison complex, but a few brave victims heroes! stand firm against the darkness in manning the lookout posts.

A view from one side of the woefully incomplete defensive wall.

The Imperium places their scout sentinels and the Stormtroopers into reserve, the rest of them gear up and plan to go with the ol’ ‘Hammer of the Imperium’ strategy and go up the center.

The Coven forces under Kirst’takiss decide to start everything on the table, because they’re a bunch of big scary monsters and aren’t afraid of nothing.

The Dark Eldar Warriors position themselves in a snowy treeline, issuing threatening howls and insults at the approaching Imperium.

The Coven forces remain eerily silent and still, simply awaiting the order to kill.

Benny and the Ratling snipers sneak in near the wall, lining up some shots on the Wracks.

The Dark Eldar Drug Roll was the running one – whoop-de-flip

The Battle
Spoiler:

“For the Glory of The Emperor!” Lt. Eppledorfer orders her Chimera forward, its weaponry flashing as she fired upon the xenos scum.

Techpriest Armin Staahl orders his squad forward as well, readying his potent power axe as his heavy armored footfalls crunch through the snow. The men of the 301st advancing with him, weapons ready.

With a sharp *crack* the Ratlings claim a Wrack, it topples silently to the snow, a hole the size of a grapefruit in its head.

The Multi-laser (Goto *lurvs* them) claims two Warriors.

The Imperial advance is strong, but the Dark Eldar are still many.

“Hahahaha!” Hellions cackle as they swoop forward, using their speed and maneuverability to glide effortlessly across the frozen ice wastes.

“New toys to play with, fetch me a play thing.”
Kirst’takiss orders her forces forward, the Talos leading the way as Grotesques and Warriors also advance.

For the record – a Talos is *not* a weird giant floating flesh blimp. It is a cruel torture device, powered by the pained twitching of its captive to inflict further torment and damage to those around it.

Just saying

The Wracks move towards the right flank, supported by the quick appearance of the Wych Venom, clearly intent on dealing with the Ratlings.

Wisely, the dark lance was not moved, and it now fires upon the Chimera.

“Nooo! I needed that for purging!” The multi-laser is destroyed.

The Wracks are unimpressed by the approaching might of the Astra Millitarum…after all, who would be scared of that name?

Harry had sent out some scout Sentinels to guard his flanks, and they now appear in force. One of them stomping into view near the Hellions. It will gun down two of them with ease.

The second appears on the other flank to aid the Ratlings, its firepower would blast apart one of the splinter cannons.

The Ratlings and Sentinel provide a solid wall of firepower support.

Of course, Ratlings being Ratlings, the scarper after shooting at the Venom, wanting no part of the Wyches inside.

More Warriors are felled by fire from the Imperial Veterans.

The Hellions and Warriors all pass their leadership checks.

“There is a hidden song at the heart of the universe, and its sounds are pain.”
The Coven advances, eyeing potential targets.

“We shall grant you a beautiful death!”
The Wyches spring from their Venom, darting lightly across the snow towards the Ratlings.

The Warriors unleash some firepower of their own. The 301st is damaged, but Techpriest Staahl’s armor provides a bulwark for the men hiding behind him.

“It looks so stark, so boring, but I think if we crack it open, we shall have a prize!”
The Hellions converge on the Sentinel.

They manage to clip off a hull point and evade any real damage in turn, locking the Sentinel down.

The Ratlings are caught by the Wyches, with predictable results.

They continue moving towards the other Imperial forces.

The Talos glides across the ground and grabs at the Chimera, ripping and tearing at it, and doubtless causing an unfortunate reaction from the Ratling’s semi-questionable still.

The explosion tears into the Imperial 377th “The Black Spades” dropping some of them, and also inflicting severe damage to the passengers.

The Talos seems eager to do more damage.

“Come, we shall make you famous…for a little while.”

A squad of Imperial Stormtroopers drops in behind the Talos, letting loose with their melta weaponry they manage to put a wound on the horrid beast.

“Your Xenos Coven has it wrong. Flesh is weak. Allow me to prove my hypothesis.”
The Techpriest continues pushing his men forward, his heavy armor protecting him from harm, for now.

Harry’s squad had managed to put a wound on one of the Grots thanks to overwatch on a failed charge, they now move forward in the hopes of doing enough additional damage to stop the unit.

Techpriest Pontious Fleak and Lt. Eppledorfer put down most of the wyches with some brutal firepower. Emphasis on fire, naturally.

The Sentinel approaches the wall and fires on the Talos to little effect.

“You have harmed my little one…one…won? You have not won with this action.”
One of the Grots is felled from Imperial flashlight spam.

A quick overview of the battlefield.

The Dark Eldar respond quickly, the Venom and Wych looking to try to stop the Imperial infantry while the Talos stalks towards the Sentinel.

“I have such sights to show you.”
The Grots advance and ready their liquifiers.

The Wracks and their Haem do the same, heading for the tightly packed Storm Troopers.

The combined fury of 4 Liquifiers will punch a serious hole in the Imperial infantry, as only one of them rolled high enough to allow any armor saves (one on the Storm Troopers)

The Talos swarms over the wall like a scuttling scorpion and assaults the Sentinel, ripping it to pieces with ease.

“I issue a challenge to you!” Harry advanced towards the small Haemonculous female. After all, she was certainly less scary than the giant beasts she was with, and it was expected for heroes to challenge enemy generals.
“Do I need to accept the challenge?” Asked my niece. Breaking character.
“No, but if you don’t, then she isn’t allowed to fight because she’ll be hiding behind her other men.” I offer a tactical breakdown.
She considers this.
“I’d hide behind them too, they’re big monsters, I don’t think the little guys can take them.”

Kirst’takiss promptly shrugs as she steps back and allows her Grots to fight for her, the massive flesh monsters swarming over the few remaining Imperial soldiers.

“Challenge accepted…as in, ‘I challenge you to defeat my giant monsters’”

The Stormtroopers are also assaulted by the Wracks, an overwhelming wave of attacks tearing past their armor.

Hunting down the Wracks to prevent them from scoring.

Lt. Eppledorfer and crew had gone over to beat down the Wracks, but the Talos had issues with them. Though she and Techpriest Fleak almost overpower it, it manages to at least prevent them from claimin an objective.

Techpriest Staahl’s unit is holding a center objective, and almost even deal with the Grotesque threat (partly simply because Kirst’takiss still steadfastly refuses all challenges issued her. She being a girl with monsters, after all)

Still, the battle is enough to prevent Imperial scoring.

Almost forgotten, the Warriors here cling to their objective.

The Ending Battle Review
Spoiler:

Pretty interesting game. Each side had a few hard counters to the other side, and basically through happenstance some happened, and others didn’t.

Imperium MVP

Techpriest Staahl. Of course he was one of the more powerful units on the board, but his axe and servo arm did a *solid* number on the Grots at an important stage.

Imperium WTF

I think ol’ Harry has to get this one. He actually was a pretty well-equipped dude and should have done a decent number on the Grots, but his dice just failed him. A second possibility is the Storm Troopers, who just mostly dropped in and died even though they should have been able to inflict some decent pain.

Dark Eldar MVP

The Talos, not even a question. In a smaller point game like this it’s quite possible to manage to knock out anything capable of hurting a Talos, and at that stage it’s just a murder machine. By dint of cunning or simple blind luck, the Talos rarely faced anything capable of hurting it – and it made the Imperium feel the effect of that.

Dark Eldar WTF

Probably the Hellions. I honestly expected that they could overcome the Sentinel quicker than they did, but they seemed barely able to hit it, much less glance it, and basically served only the purpose of locking it down for the game. Useful…but for a unit that should have been a great harassment tool, kind of underwhelming.

Closing Fluff
Spoiler:

“It’s not so bad, Guv’nor.” Benny managed a smile as he produced a flask from his coat. “I still got some of the good shine ‘fore the explosion.”

“How reassuring,” sighed Harry as he trudged along through the snow, the fine whiskers on his face caked with ice and frost. He and the other survivors had been lucky enough to get out with their lives intact. Indeed, that horrid bald female had been but a second or two away from plucking one of Harry’s eyes from his head when, inexplicably, she had seemed to decide it was time to leave. Sparring him and nearly half his command.

“If we maintain our current pace we should be able to reach the next supply cache before night falls.” Techpriest Staahl walked with seemingly indifferent focus, his armored feet crunching on the hard packed icy snow beneath them. “Failure to do so would leave us exposed to the Avitas night, which would be…unfortunate for the biologicals here.”

“I just can’t figure out why they’d have left when they did.” Lt. Eppledorfer hugged her thermo cloak around her as she slogged along next to Paget.

“It only makes sense if their goal wasn’t to kill us,” Harry shrugged, not really caring much. “I suppose it could have been a feint of something to draw…” His voice failed him. Oh, fething hells! “They were trying to draw away our forces, they’re attacking the prison, possibly even now! Come on!” Harry struggled forward, pushing his way through the snow and ice as he led the way.

The others mistook his drive for a focused bravery, a goal to come to grips with the foe once more. This was far from the truth, and as far as Harry was concerned, if he never saw the creepy bald Dark Eldar again it would be too soon. But his issue was rather more practical. Avitas was a frozen and dead world, if the Eldar managed to destroy the prison facility then it was more than likely that everyone on the planet would die of exposure *long* before any Imperial aid could arrive. The only way he ahd any chance of surviving was getting to the prison first…and maybe just stealing a shuttle and scarpering into orbit.

Harry Paget waved his band forward, urging all due speed – the Hero of the Imperium leading the way.

Poor 'Flash' Paget had a rough showing of it this time around. It does make me wonder if the poor lad will ever manage to get off that frozen planet.

Thanks for the kind words

That was a fun report.

I must be missing the background, why two tech priests with only 1 chimera and 2 sentinels?

Functionally neither were conventional tech priests. One was basically an armored CC monster, and the other was a wild collection of flame based weaponry. They were each special characters to add more flavor for the players. I actually gave neither of them normal techpriest effects - I didn't want to complicate having to learn the vehicle rules in any way or form.

Background wise, the Allied 1st Mechanicus has a lot of deep connections to the Mechanicum and the priesthood, and have many techpriests in positions of authority and power therein.

Great batrep as always Thor. Sounds like your niece and nephew had some fun. I laughed so hard when your niece said she would hide behind the monsters.

Those rascally inquisition seem like they stirred up a whole beehive more than they wanted.

That's standard operating procedure for the Inquisition.

Just wait for the next batrep or two though - we've got a cool one planned for the end of the month. Less DE, but more awesome. I also need to do one for the prison break - maybe I'll try to get Jake in on that at the FLGS.

Considering that this bat rep got me to go back and read the entire campaign, and I'm now on the prequel campaign...I figured this thread deserves a bump.
