Was thinking of buying a new board game, Played out on Runebound and Dungeon! so I want to buy a new game to occupy my, and my friends, time.

1.Dragon Strike
2. Pathfinder card game rise of the runelords
3. Arkham horror: call of cthulhu

Those are my ideas so far, My friends and I play games like Magic the gathering. Hero Quest, and more adventureish games like that, but we want something new.
Any other games you guys think are good would be appreciated, we want a good game, that can be played over and over again without getting tedious, or boring.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I agree -- will move the thread.

How many players in your group?

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I would recommend against arkham horror- the setup is extremely long, and the rulebook has some embarassing errors and frustrating balance issues. The balance would be fine if it were a video/computer game where there's no setup, but an hour plus setup for twenty minutes of getting into the game before "oops, I opened the wrong door" is infuriating, rather than kinda' ballsy (if it didn't have the setup)

Have not played Dragon Strike, so can't comment.

Based on your mention of MtG, the Pathfinder card game sounds like a good match for your group. It gives a little bit of deck-building as your character progresses, and it can be played as a stand-alone adventure or as a campaign. {Basically, the starting character decks are fixed. If your group successfully completes an adventure, you usually have an option to change out a few starting cards for better cards that you've obtained during the adventure.} Even if several different groups are playing with one set, the game comes with a special notepad to record personal decks, so both Hank and Susan can play the Ranger, but the differences between their decks noted so they can be adjusted.

Arkham Horror ... while I've played it and like it somewhat, I'm hesitant to recommend it for the same reasons that Spiralingcadaver mentioned above. if you want a Lovecraft-themed game, my suggestion is Eldritch Horror. Set-up and play time is a little shorter than Arkham Horror (although not as much as a number of us hoped). Instant game overs are not likely from what I've seen. OTOH, the situation can crumble quickly: too many fires and not enough firefighters. Still, I've enjoyed this game.

Shadowrift is a cooperative deck builder. As heroes you must defend the town of Haven. Victory comes if you seal all the shadowrifts or build all eight walls. There are many more ways to lose than win. Unlike Pathfinder, there is no option to retain an improved deck for later use. Each new adventure means going back to the basic ten starter cards.

Zombicide is a game I like. It's more of a hack and slash than an adventure game though. Set up can be time-consuming though. Map tiles need to be set up correctly, then objectives placed. As it is a co-op, if your group discusses things to death before making a move, the game will also drag out.

You may want to visit Boardgame Geek. That site specializes in board games and you can look games up (like Runebound) and see what are recommended as similar. You can find me there under the same user name and avatar.

Good gaming!

I don't know how I missed the entire sub forum for board games....sorry about that.

There are usually 2 of us playing depending on who isn't busy and it can get up to 4 players easily.

I will probably avoid arkham horror now that I know that I can instant game over after a huge setup.

I will definitely go check out board game geek, so thanks for all of the help you have given me here

I forgot to mention, if you're looking for a haunted house game, Betrayal at the House on the Hill is actually pretty good.

It's a little pricey for me, since I tend to like things that are a little more strategy, but it's got quick setup and has a fair amount of planning and needing to react as the game develops. It's too random to be very deep play, but it also means that "shock! death!" means you lost half an hour of play, not an hour of setup. If you can find a copy for cheap or try it out, I'd recommend it.

My only real complaint is players can be eliminated, but, among games with player elimination, co-op is the least offensive, since you can still contribute to team planning, if not what's actually going on on the board.

Out of your options, I've only played Arkham Horror, and enjoyed it. As mentioned, set-up is a bear, but we've never had any instant game overs. On the contrary, our group finds it too easy and I had to go buy some expansions to ramp things up.

Other recommendations-
Smash-up is a fun game for 2-4 players. Small World is another good one. Thunderstone. Quarriors. All good board games. Are you more in to cooperative games, or every man for himself?

My only encounters with that game have been "oops, you went the wrong way. Did you want some clues saying that could have warned you? Too bad, they were time-sensitive. They appear 2 turns after you can screw yourself over."

Nothing about difficulty, just random gak that ended the game. We've done fine fighting baddies and solving puzzles.

Now which Arkham horror game are we talking about? The huge board game with about 50 seperate mini-decks, the minis game, or the card game?

Will also pipe up for Betrayal at the House on the Hill. I only played it once but had a good time. It seems very good.

I'd also really recommend Pandemic.

I like the D&D board games:

Castle Ravenloft
Wrath of Ashardalon
Legend of Drizzt

I will probably be playing these pretty soon:

Lords of Waterdeep
Dungeon Command: Heart of Cormyr
Dungeon Command: Sting of Lolth

I consider Dungeon Command a board game but it could also be loosely classified as a skirmish war game. The Dungeon Command packs come with cards that make them useable in the other D&D board games (Ravenloft, &etc).

Dungeon Command sounds particularly good for you as you generally have two players.

The other D&D board games might also be good for you as they are cooperative -- you can have a lot of fun playing them with only two people. You guys should go in for both and synergize your board gaming.

Sinful, not positive, came with a bunch of minis and was a huge board game... I'm assuming it's the first you mentioned?

Nope, this is the bad boy I'm talking about-

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/15987/arkham-horror

Set-up is a beast, but our group has never encountered a game we couldn't win. Some events are a pain in the butt, but there was never a point where we just threw our hands up because we couldn't win.

I'd recommend Eldricth Horror or Elder Sign over Arkham Horror... All three have their strong points though and you could make a pretty convincing arguement as to why any of the three of them is the best.

If you like MTG, it might be worthwhile to pickup a deck builder, something along the lines of Ascension or Dominion. If you want something alittle close to MTG you could pickup one of Fantasy Flights LCG's. I highly recommend Android: Netrunner and they will be releasing a 40k LCG very soon.

You could also try something completly different and pickup a Euro game. Lords of Waterdeep, Stone Age or Manhatten Project are excellent gateways into that genere.

Copying my post from another thread:

I'm a big fan of a couple games:

Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game

It plays 2-6 people, and is full of fantastic photographic cards and chits and stuff. I'm a big fan of Flying Frog games because they tend to give you tons of extra pieces you can use for custom scenarios or the scenarios they sometimes release on the web. Easy enough that my mother enjoys playing, but has plenty of avenues for expansion (and expansion packs if you want). It has a few easter egg references (the first standalone expansion is called Timber Peak, taking place in a remote logging community...)

They have a similar game set in a pulp Martians vs Carnies arena:

Invasion from Outer Space

Despite not getting the expansion love that LNOE gets, I think this is actually the superior game. The Martian mechanics are better than the Zombie mechanics of LNOE, imo.

Both games come with a good number of figures that are easily paintable.

Pandemic is my favorite at the moment. As you get better at the game you can increase the difficulty in increments up to the point where you have about 6 turns to win

Also not technically board games but Munchkin and Cards Against Humanity

Arkham Horror is very complex. I'd love to try it again at a convention or similar with someone who knows the rules handling the monster movement and such, but it's a massive time investment. I would like to pick up Elder Sign, which is less immersive, but also much faster, saner, and I feel offers most of the same enjoyment with less time investment.

(Elder Sign reuses some art resources, but is a dice game with lots of Cthulhu trappings and a similar co-op quest mechanic. Players control characters trying to solve quests by rolling specific symbols on custom dice.)

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

I don't want to go into board game reviews as that would take all day, but here is a short list of my groups favorite games.

Arkaham Horror. If you have 4-5 hours to kill, this is a very fun cooperative game. Set up time is a chore, though.

Elder Sign. Similar to Arkham Horror, but stream-lined.

Battle Star Galactica. "I'm totes not the Psylon. Super Cereal."

Dominion. Fast action card game. You can play 2-3 times in an hour. Fun game!

Pathfinder Card Game Rise of the Rune Lords. My fiance and I have played the hell out of this game. We each run 2 characters. Tons of fun!

Pandemic. Cooperative game. We're about 50/50 on winning this one on hard mode (5 Epidemic Cards). 6 Epidemic cards is crazy hard. Tough, challenging game.

Scrabble. Yes, it's a Milton Bradley game, but it's very fun. Sue me!

I prefer Tanto Cuore to Dominion myself. Besides the Moe style, it's less of a "watch everyone else constantly cycle through their deck" game, especially if you add in the expansions. Everyone has more of a chance to win besides the one or two people who bought all the cycle cards. It can still happen, but I found it to be rarer circumstance.

Different strokes for different folks. The mechanics are solid if you can get past the art style/theme.

More board games I've had fun with are Forbidden Island(great co-op game for kids), Castle Panic(Another one that kids can enjoy too), Super Dungeon Explore, DOOM miniatures game, Gloom, and King ofTokyo.
Spoiler:
Kanzume Goddess is a ton of fun, but it's style may be a turnoff for some groups. I also second Cards against Humanity, another game that flies with some groups but not with others.

The only board game made between old school stuff like chess and poker, and modern board games, that I'll touch with a 10' pole. Really fun, as long as everyone's in approximately the same skill level.

Wait, is Liar's Dice old or more recent? I also play that.

Yep. Mansions of Madness. From what I understand it uses minis, it's not a skirmish game or anything. I've played Arkham Horror and Elder Sign myself. I'm fond of both, but Arkham Horror has a very long set-up time.
