I'm not. Jesus who would buy a $340 ruleset that will probably be considered broken in 6 months, and then worthless when 8th Edition comes out in 2 years.
I hate to be cynical, but what the hell. I dont know who I am annoyed with more, GW for pulling this crap, or the people who actually buy these and just encourage GW to keep doing it.
Understand that if these editions lasted like 5-6 years, I could say, sure, especially it its popular. But looking at GW's track record of late, just seems pointless spending money like this unless you have so much money that it doesnt seem like it.

I just paid 87 for the rulebook, both sets of cards and shipping... probably all I get unless 7th really tightens down some rules (which doesn't appear to be its thing).

I will be getting it. I am actually a bit more excited now that a few thing have been made clear about all the wild rumors that were flying around.
This is my first big release as a 40k player. I started right after 6th was released. I wanted something nice to display in my game room as well.
I do not get to play as much anymore after I moved to the boonies, but look forward to spending this weekend playing with friends when I head back to Atlanta.

Just out of curiosity, how are you going to feel if... lets say in 2 years GW comes out with 8th... think you will stay committed to 7th due to the investment, or just go ahead and buy 8th as well?

Honestly I don't see myself buying another collectors edition. I am mostly getting this because of my First big release. I will probably buy new rules if they come out and that's what everyone is using.

You can't extrapolate from one data point. Every prior edition lasted 4+ years, but sixth was both the most extended edition since what, second? And also one of the more complained about.
I got it as my husband loves new shinies and it's got a good amount of interest to it, as I like the background etc.

From the looks of it, it's a fancy box filled with fancy books and fancy coins with skulls and numbers (1-6) on them supposedly for use as objectives. I certainly don't think it's worth $400 CAD. I'll probably hold off on buying the new rules for a bit as I don't play often enough right now to justify it. Might get the ebook version instead, saves me a tidy $30.

I wouldn't get any of the special editions I've ever seen GW create, not for the prices they charge. Getting a Slaanesh themed Daemon dex was tempting, but then I saw twice the price for a different cover? No, that's just ridiculous.
So I doubt I would consider this release a fair price for what it includes.
However, being the first big edition since Vash started, I can totally understand why xe'd want to get it.

I'd bought the Collectors edition for 5th & 6th, but $400 Canadian is just silly expensive for no good reason.
At least the last two Collectors editions were basically an extra $30-50 or so at most compared to the Gamer's Edition.
But I simply can't justify even to myself something like a 300% mark-up just for 'nicer looks'.

Well, really, when you bundle the new ruleset, cards for powers and objectives, and the art book, you're still under half what the collector edition is charging you. The difference is a map (such value), some coins (much special), and an additional art wallet thing...(wow).
Oh, and a cardboard box.
I'll take my two baneblades instead.

You're still pretty new to this all, I take it? 40k is always a game where people who don't get it whine about its imbalance, regardless of the edition its in, and it usually takes more like a half a decade between rules editions. Hell, ask any ork player how long they've been using their codex for.
... or how long they used the last one for. 15 years for two books isn't too shabby.
If you want to play 40k, you're buying into a game that keeps itself fresh by changing over time. If you want a static, balanced strategy game, then go play chess. I guarantee the rules aren't going to change any time soon, and you can pick up the rules for free.

Hmmmm... $300 saved on rules = 6 more Tzeentch Chariot kits, which = 4 more 'counts as' Beasts conversions + 2 Exalted Flamers + 6 more 'counts as' Plaguedrones... oh, and the extra bitz left over to use for conjuring new Tzheralds.
Or maybe 2 actual Burny Chariots, 4 Exalted Flamers and 4 more Changebringers (Plaguedrones)??!
Gee, I wonder whatever option shall I choose?!

Actually been around since Rogue Trader, although I've been in and out of 40k during that time. Static rules isn't the point being made here.
We're on our 7th edition, and while I understand the need to refresh and I am certainly ok with that, shelling out $340 on a limited edition copies of the rules is what I find baffling, given that we all know that 7th is going to be followed by 8th. And given that GW just changed the rules after 2 years, and as the other person commented above that this is a rare, I am betting if GW makes a decent influx of cash from this, it will become the norm. I am not saying I want to stick with a broken ruleset if its broken, just saying that $340 is a lot of money on a really wearable item.
Someone suggested getting the main rulebook and 2 baneblades. The Baneblades will still be worth something 5 years from now. This limited edition ruleset wont be. That's all I am trying to say. If I believed the shelf life would be longer, I would prob be more open to it. But I just don't trust GW.
Not to say it isn't a quality set either. I bet the rulebooks are gorgeous. Well, I hope there are.

I just dont understand what people have against other people buying it. Its like complaining that youre on a diet so someone else shouldnt have a doughnut.... Its not a waste of money to me - it makes a good present, that gets me husband brownie points, and is pretty. It also is a one stop shop, which as its own benefits, and means no need to buy the boxed set just for the small rulebook - i'll grab the digital version to have one less FAQ to worry about. Yes, it could bite if they swap to a 2 year cycle, however again - you dont get to extrapolate from one data point and claim the sky is falling. 6th was fairly unique in the level of expansion it received, and was the first to trial real building rules (remember the ruins rules for 4th that were appalling, that then got better in 5th?) so a short lifecycle seemed inevitable to me. Colectors editions of codexes range from the incredibly pretty (Dwarf, Lizardmen, DA, IG) to the just-a-slip-cover efforts like Daemons (although there that was partly because there were 4 made, for the same pool of money, meaning each one couldnt be as expensive to produce as you lose the scale - basic economics). Again there, just get what you like the look of. They do take note of what doesnt sell (I have this second hand from two people int he studio, as they use this info like any business) and generally the quality has been improving. I'm aware that I'm lucky that the money side of the hobby is mattering less and less as I get (much) older, same as Im less concerned about being competitive (tbh never hugely competitive anyway - I liked taking what I liked to play and honing THAT, rather than netlisting - I have to enjoy the army or else I just dont play it and definitely dont play it well)

I'd be kinda upset if my significant other spent that much money on such an item, then again, they'd know that I'd not want that.
I won't be buying it.
And I hate the instant "chess" analogy. It's lazy. We have a handful of other competing games with rules for cheaper and better written and balanced. And you can purchase the rules for three of them for he cost of the standard rule book.
You could have a starter army and the rules for three to four other Wargames for the cost of the GW special edition. You could have two armies for one and demo games to friends to try something new.
That's the value of the GW special edition. Fancy covers and cardboard or new games and models. $85 for rules is already asinine. $340 is reaching... Ludicrous. Speeeeeed.

It was the "worthless in 24 months" aspect, suggesting 8th is out then. That was an extrapolcation based on one data point, whcih is an unsound argument.

I think people get upset over others buying this (and other ludicrous GW products) because, by buying it, they are telling GW that it is perfectly OK to more than double prices for a single different cover, or to "bundle" items with absolutely no savings, or sell inferior versions of paint/tools for ten times what you could find at Wal-Mart for.
People buying GWs idiocy is how we got here in the first place.

Bought the Salamanders variant of the Space Marine codex too. I work hard for money, might as well spend it on neat things that I want.
