So is the 2 Hot Shot Volley guns you can give to a stormtrooper squad worth it? (8 S4 AP3 shots upto 24" if they stand still) or should these slots be reserved for meltas, plasmaguns etc?

Scions can deepstrike without the need for a transport, so DSing in a min sized 5 man squad is a cheap way of getting 2 BS4 melta guns where you need them to be for a mere 90 points total. This is pretty handy.

dual plasma guns are also useful as they give off upto 4 S7 AP2 shots, ideal for taking on MCs and finishing them off with 6s from hot shot lasgun fire.

But the two volley guns sure pack a punch, so I'm all ears.

Depends on where your unit is, and if you are using the MT or AM codex.

I like volleyguns in my MT allies, but for the units that are going to have a more defensive role. The Tempestor's order to twinlink guns is very good for stationary volleyguns (or the 4 special weapons in his unit). But if it is something that is ranging out or deep striking, meltas or plasma may be more appropriate. That said, if you are gonna be fighting power armor, it's hard to trump the volume of fire you get from a volleygun.

Figures.

Regular Scions tend to be a waste of points if they're playing defensively as part of a gunline behind an ADL, due to their mediocre range and wasting of their deepstrike capability.

A MT command squad on the other hand can take 4 hot shot volley guns and can give orders to itself (I think) and would thus do well both behind an ADL (especially when youre up against aggressive MEQ armies like BT, CSM or BA)

...or they can also do great when they deep strike with 4 meltaguns. Shame they can only be taken after you have 1 Scion squad.
