A guy locally is selling off his Dreadfleet stuff on the cheap.

Is it a fun game? I always liked nautical video games, so this caught my interest.

The models are pretty awesome looking and you can spend just as much time painting them as any warhammer army.

We have a guy that usually comes in every week for a painting lesson at the local store. He's doing this for the last couple months or so. So over the last two months I've seen various dreadfleet models slowly being painted. They are really detailed and nice models.

As for playing the game, I have no idea

I do not work for GW in any fashion. When I edit my post, either I've misspelled something, punctuation, or I'm fixing swearing. Oops.

I have thus far only played one game of Dreadfleet, it was with my wife and it was the first mission/scenario in the rule book with one ship per side facing off against each other. It took us three hours of trading shots without either being sunk before we gave up. The random wind direction mechanic in particular is awful, in my opinion.

I would say it fails as a game but the mat and the terrain are worth it if you can get them cheap. I use both the mat and the terrain for my games of Man O War - the terrain is not exactly to scale but still functions fine as mini islands/rock outcrops etc.

It's a great party game, give each person one ship and have a free for all. The rules are simple (in an elegant way, not a dumbed down way) enough that even the super-casual girls in my group picked them up in one session.

There's nothing terrible about it unless you're some sort of tourney addict who needs to be all competitive, all the time.

The old meta is dead and the new meta struggles to be born. Now is the time of munchkins.

The mat is perfect for other games like deepwars.

Quirkworthy had an amusing series of articles about Dreadfleet - you could see Jake Thornton's enthusiasm building, then draining away, then crashing on the reefs of bad game design....

Though he finished with a couple of articles on salvaging the game.

So basically people say the games rules suck and that having paid a load of money for it was disappointing... but what if you can get the set brand new for $50.00? Would it be worth it if you just like the models?

If you like the models?

Yes - which is why I mentioned that Quirkworthy had some rules up for fixing the game.

Part One (Part Two has not yet appeared, at least as far as I know.)

His intent seems to be making the game less random, so that strategy and tactics mean something.

Perhaps GW made the game bad on purpose. Space Hulk sold well so they were obligated to do another box game, so they made it purposefully tank so they didn't have to do it again and as a bonus claim there's no demand for Manowar.
