What do you guys think is a decent one to start with; normal or veneral? Also, how do the FW work, are they different stats as well or just designs/weapon loadouts? Can I use FW weapons on GW Dreadnaughts?

Venerable. With changes to grenades you can have some fun now in cc.

What changes to grenades? I'd love to go back to using AV12 Dreads.

Is venerable a separate model or just an upgrade?

I think a veneral dreadnought would be more in Nurgle's camp...

both. It's an upgrade to standard dreads that give you the player the chance to demand your opponent re-roll penetrating hits (thought you must accept result 2 as final). It's also a small stat buff in other areas.
Venerables are viable now either in cc if you put them in a pod and drop them in, or via range if you give them guns. Don't go trying to make them multi-roll your just going to leave unhappy.
A regular dready is a bit to squishy to field in cc, he'd be okay as a gun platform though.

You could probably just play a reg dread as a ven dread and most people wouldn’t bat an eye. Just point out what he is when explaining your list to your opponent.
From a modeling standpoint, both of the kits are nice, but the Ven Dread kit is a much newer kit, and packed full of options and extras.
Both kits come with assault cannons, TLLC, and powerfists (w/ SB/HF)
The reg dread comes with the ML box arm
The ven dread comes with the PC arm.
The reg dread comes with a couple of sarcophagus fronts to choose from
The ven dread has sarcophagi aplenty, extra torso fronts, shoulders, leg armor, arm/shoulder overlays, badges, seals, and more. If you put yours together and it looks the same as somebody else’s, you did it on purpose. With the number of options in the kit, it can’t be accidental

dont you mean venereal?
And I agree the new venerable dread kit (by "new" I mean only a handful of years old ) is much cooler than the old standard dread kit... so there really is no ML in there? Wow GW probably did that on purpose so their old dread kits continue to sell .
Check out the Ironclad Dreadnought out too. Nothing sweeter than an AV13 dread that now will win most fights vs standard MCs 1 on 1

I was refering to the stock plastic GW venerable dread kit. Just finished putting mine together. The MM is not part of the kit, but the rest is. Besides the basic frame, almost everything had 2 to 3-6 options on what to use. I'm a big fan of them from a modeling POV, and still enjoy them on the field.
