Is it WFB-like?

The rules I read suggested that formations were the exception, not the norm. It's more like Fantasy 40K than WFB.

That said, Rackham won't burn your 3e rulebooks. No one will punch you in the arm if you keep fielding skirmish armies. In some ways having a settled game without tons of new models shoveled out every month can be a good thing.

hey, everyone else gripes about GW, let me have my Rackham venting!

WHFB in that they are pushing more massive armies. It looks to be like Rag-Narok in ways, but very simplified. I do agree the rule set seems to be Fantasy 40k.

And tell that to my Warzone and Vor stuff....

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

While I agree, you better be prepared to collect a minimum of two forces so that you can conscript a second person to play, just in case they have no clue as to what your talking about when you discuss playing this game.

I have been there, hell, sometimes I live in my summer home there.
(read: space hulk, warzone, chainmail)

Its not a problem now, but wait a couple years when such rules and models no longer exist. Ebay isnt always so kind...

(speaking of chainmail, now thats one skirmish fantasy game with potential pizaz. All you need is a 3rd ed monster manual and players handbook, the conversion booklet, a model for the rules conversion and you can make any damned thing for the game within the realm of generic fantasy that you would ever want. No need to buy the official "Chainmail" figs and corresponding data card)

Re/Chainmail: or you could get the D&D miniatures handbook.
Or just play No Quarter

It's a hella cool game with some sweet figs though.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

Ragnarok and Confrontation were two different things.

Confrontation was the skirmish level game.
Ragnarok was the mass combat game. It never caught on around here because the models were all metal and expensive. Hard to get people to invest all that when WHFB is around, and much cheaper.

The new rules are supposed to be for everything, with a supplement coming out in Cry Havoc that gives it more skirmish level detail.

Chainmail was quite fun. I think it would have been good to keep around.

What did happen to Chainmail anyway? Was it too few figs? Not enough buyers?

They decided the plastic collectible route was the better way, which for D&D it works. I don't know that many that play the miniatures game, but I know a lot of DMs that have thousands of those little figs they use for the RPG. Plastic prepaints work for that situation quite well, and they are cheap. DMs don't want a lot of hassle or to have to paint 50 goblins for a scenario.

That's too bad. I liked the rules in Chainmail (and the cheesy card terrain).

Yeah, it was a purely marketing decision (CMG = better). There were TONS of figs made for all factions, so it definitely wasn't that.

That was a time of really good games/minis that have just gone away. 1999 comes to mind as also from that era. 'tis a shame, really.

Well the 30+ page rules for chainmail are still available to download for free.

www.wizards.com/dnd/files/CHM_comp_rules.zip

And the full 150+ page rules are available to download for $5. (it was never printed)

[edit]
Nevermind. I paid the $5 and they give you a serial link to the full rules download. So go ahead and download this to your hearts content. I am sure you will be hard pressed to find a better fantasy skirmish game.

I dont know how good the downloadable rules are though.  (they rock) Chainmail went under right before it had a chance to get popular. (i.e mageknight and mechwarrior got big, so they cancelled the rule book they were about to release, the cool miniatures they were proposing, etc)

Hey, I still have some Evil Vatican minis from 1999 laying around here, someplace.  I had preordered the Viking Angel but I don't think it ever came out before the company went under.

I'm still looking for a Viking Angel.  If anyone has one, send me a PM.  I'll send you some cash for it.
