So Stelek if you are truly as great as you have been telling us then I expect to you win best overall at all three GW GTs this year. Anything less will be a disappointment in our eyes.

Awww. Here I thought you were ignoring me.
Sadly I doubt I'll attend more than LV.
I don't really like Illinois and if I go to Baltimore I'll have to go up to Philly, and that means taking my wife...and it's so close to the holidays flying twice to visit my family there would suck.
Oh and I'm better. I've been holding back.

Question to you, DD.
Since I agree with you since the decline of the 40k design team to only one designer whose work I appreciate (and makes me spend money) namely Phil Kelly, the game has taken a turn for the worse overall in the rules and codices areas.
Do you think for diehards such as myself, that the items you listed (the staffing, the resources, the profit margin, the venue) or what I or Turtle have said...think those would make a difference?
For me it's the rules. In rules I mean the rules and the army lists. The rules are what's keeping me away more. In the past I have traveled to play 40k tournaments at a tiny golf course in the middle of Illinois. If the rules are good, more people will play. I was brought to this conclusion by some other friends who used to play a whole lot more than they do now. We all still play, about once every 2 months, but you won't see us going out to tourney's so much. This is sad because there are times I want to go to a tourney, but as the time approaches I don't go. The last big tourney I went to, which most of the people around here went to, was the Ard Boyz. Before that it was many years ago. Oh we will still make appearances at Adepticon, mostly because some of us at times run things and because it is in our backyard, but that's it.

I think I know what happened.
Andy Chambers left in 2003 and pulled 40k down with him!
Now he's making starcraft 2 as lead designer.. oh great joy.
I love his wisdom for over 5+ years =)

PROJEKT 'X' EATS ANDY CHAMBERS ALIVE!
It's been months since I posted anything to the Red Star Games site, but I've got a really good excuse (honest). You see, two things have been going on. First, I started playing World of Warcraft and so while I have no social life any more I do have a level 60 Warlock and raid Molten Core on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. Ok, so that isn't a really good excuse but it is kinda funny and more pertinently it's true.
The real excuse for my neglect of fellow revolutionaries is that I've been living in southern California since the start of October '05 doing contract work for Blizzard Entertainment. If you've been living under a rock for the past ten years and don't know about Blizzard they make the biggest mmorpg in the world - the aforementioned World of Warcraft, and are the creators of Diablo, Starcraft and Warcraft games.
I've been enjoying my time in SoCal a lot - its very nice to be in a land where winter means it's ever so slightly cooler and the sun doesn't necessarily shine every day (as opposed to four to six months of solid grey overcast and sub-zero temperatures back in the UK). So much so that I've applied for a work permit over here so I can take up a very generous permanent contract at Blizzard. It's very exciting to be back working full time with a dedicated and talented team of creative types.
For me it's some of the same kind of work as I've done in the past in terms of developing plotlines, characters and ideas in big, vibrant universes. But I'm also dealing with new challenges like scripting dialogue and cinematic cut scenes - being able to have your creations actually move around and talk is quite something.
On the home front I note that Starship Troopers has been well received and the Westeros game is gathering momentum (another one of those unfinished tasks is to read through the latest manuscript for Westeros). It's good to see miniatures gaming still has new concepts and ideas ready to put into the market place.
It's been rather painful to contrast this with the difficulties Games Workshop has found itself in over the last year as several of my friends there have been forced to move on. I can only hope that this creates a realization that an expansive retail organisation and integrated manufacturing capacity is no substitute for originality and diversity in the modern market. Time will tell but I'm sure GW will endure, there's still plenty of cool stuff they can do and some seriously skilled individuals there that can do it.
For me, however, the future is in photons and not lead or plastic at least for a while. The process is a slow one, but hopefully you'll be able to see some of the results in a year or two. Hopefully they won't suck either.

This thread makes me miss the old GW forums. This would've gotten locked two pages ago for going off topic, with or without Dave stopping by. And nothing else has ever EVER made me say I miss the GW forums
In an attempt to get this back into the realm of why I started reading the thread to begin with, I don't care about LoTRs profitability or who owns stock. If you don't care like I don't care, start your post with "Me Neither" and then say something about Games Day, please.
I have looked forward to Games Day Atlanta since its first year and am sorry to see it go. I don't have "numbers" or "facts" but there were more people in my way every single year than the year before. Sucks that it wasn't enough to keep it coming back. I live in East Tennessee and am interested in any other events in the immediate area. Anyone with good options, I'd love to hear them!

The argument for stripping it was a strong independent

Why hasn’t Seattle seen a GT or a GD in almost 3 years? Washington state is tied for 3rd (with Maryland) in the number of GW stores. The Seattle area also has a lot of independent retailers. Then if you drive north for a couple hours there are a bunch of GW stores and independent retailers in Vancouver B.C.
The local GW staff say that GW corporate wants to see more involvement from clubs and other organizations. Within the past couple years, there hasn’t been a strong club presence in the area. But there have been some decent independent events such as DragonFlight and others.
I know it takes time to create a strong reputation like Adepticon. But the Seattle area has huge potential. Why does it seem like GW is avoiding doing major events in the Seattle area? There are certainly more than enough players locally. And GTs draw yet more players from around the country. Neglecting to run big events in such a big metro area isn’t going to encourage people.

Well, there is the Hillbilly in Memphis in July.
But a tournament is very different from a Gamesday.
If they are looking for Golden Demon, Forgeworld, and other hobby-centric events, then they are out of luck.

My instinctive take on the biggest obstacle has to be cost, in terms of both money and time invested. They have to haul all those tables by truck. That said, they do have a Vegas GT… Maybe it’s just a question of only having the resources right now for one on the West coast, and they chose Vegas as it has more hotels and cheaper travel packages for people to get there.
Dragonflight’s still going? That’s awesome. The last time I attended was 1992, at the UW campus. When you got a room it was in a dorm. Rock.

Memphis is a little far for me but thanks for the suggestion! I'm looking at keeping my drive time at 4 hours or less so Nashville to Charlotte and Lexington to Atlanta is about my limits as I'm roughly Knoxville based. There's DragonCon in Atlanta, I think, later in the year. I guess that way I get all of my gaming all in one convenient place

Well I can't complain about Gw's GT's or GD's since I live an hour from Las Vegas and an hour from the Los Angels GD. I can drive spend all day doing GW stuff and then drive home. So I am just a happy little bugger.

Logic, it might be the same reason that large concert tours often skip this area: logistically, we're way out from everything else in te nation, and shipping gear and people here is a fair chunk more expensive than just hitting somewhere more central. Locations like Los Angeles can draw from the entirety of southern California, while we draw from the great sprawling metropolis of... Portland. Yes, we have a lot of nerds here (an unbelievably high nerd-to-normal ratio that begins to pull reality in on itself until the occasional attractive woman is inexplicably drawn into a gamestore or two, even). But we're kind of irrelevant thanks to our location.
If they're only doing 3, central location or convenience to GW facilities makes sense.
Now what we should be asking ourselves is why Seattle doesn't have a full-scale Indy, given the support base that you pointed out. Hmmm.

Seattle isn't in driving range, but alot of Idaho/Wyoming/Utah gamers I know have/would go to Seattle. It's a cheap flight away.
I think part of the problem with Seattle is, it's a very expensive city for tourists. On par with Vegas.
