Stalwart Veteran Guard Sergeant

I've played a few games of 4th, and it basically rawks so hard I never want to play 3.x again. Of course, when I tell the people on the Wizards boards this, I get beardnecks accusing me of everything from kicking puppy dogs to murder and rape.

"I went into a hobby-shop to play m'self a game,
The 'ouse Guru 'e up an' sez "The Guard is weak and lame!"
The Chaos gits around the shelves they laughed and snickered in my face,
I outs into the street again an' grabbed my figure-case."
Oh it's "Angels this" an' "Space-wolves that", and "Guardsmen, go away!";
But it's "Thank you for the ordnance" when the Guard begins to play,
O it's "LOOK AT ALL THE ORDNANCE!" when the Guard begins to play.."

i DMed a game the other night and it went very well. the longest time was spent creating characters, but i think that more to do with the new system than anything. after a couple of times it started to get much faster so i think its easier to create a level 1 character (and almost certainly higher level characters) then in 3.5.
The combats went well. everyone was able to contribute some how, so nodoby was left feeing overshadowed or useless. turns were also much faster. with the loss of iterative attacks, there is no more waiting around for one guy to roll just for his one turn. calcualting AB was a bit tricky (trying to DM 5 players with only 1 PHB isnt easy) but im sure that will come easier with time.
what i found fantastic, though, was the amount of time it took me to prepare. i create a little adventure with 10 encounters, with treasure and a map took me about an hour. i was absolutly stunned that it should take such little time. it meants that if i wanted to write some great dungeon it should only take me one evening, rather than days or weeks.
thats my favorite thing about 4E

Polonius wrote:Well, seeing as I literally will die if I ever lose a game of 40k, I find your approach almost heretical. If we were to play each other in a tournament, not only would I table you, I would murder you, your family, every woman you ever loved and burn down your house. I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live? |

I finally got to run my test game. I only had three players, but the new system made it easy to work out encounters that were challenging but not overwhelming for them.
On preparation time, I totally agree. The new monster and hazard formats are so much easier to read, and so much better designed. Having multiple ways to deal with every problem without having to improvise leaves my mind much freer to work on doing interesting things within the combat with the monsters. Each monster having a clearly defined role makes them easier for me to use.
All in all, 4th is a brilliant little system. I can't wait for more fluff and meat to be added.

I'd be playing if the fraking DDI stuff was online. Have my old group from High School all lined up for our E. Gary Gygax memorial game. I know, there's a bunch of other programs out there that will do the same thing, but DDI looked so cool. Just hafta wait.

DDI is now where near finished. The outside developers they hired dropped the ball and now the Wizards staff have basically started rebuilding it from scratch.
On the plus side, it looks like we'll be getting months of free access to Dungeon and Dragon magazine untill they can sorty out the disaster.
