Actually, I was pleased to see them working some of the terms from the Malus Darkblade novels into their lore. I was hoping for a Vaulkhar, but a Dread Lord will do. Even if they make it one word.

At least they didn't make it a dread elf.

Well, shoot. I was trying to post a zoomed picture of the Hydra, but it won't work. Never mind.

Complete with all-new, extra-fughly hydra! I may vomit.

I'll reserve judgment until I can see a better picture, but GW's will have a tough time matching this beauty:

And, since I don't play in many (!) "GW ONLY" tournaments, I think I'll spend my time painting the Reaper one...

I think we may have a first! Alliance Games has GW's Hydra listed at $40. Reaper's Hydra is $48. Reaper is more expensive than GW? It's a sign of the Apocalypse

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

those minis are OK. Shame they didn't redo more of the existing range with the new style. Say Executioners coming somewhere in between Warriors and the new Knights.

Reaper announced higher prices recently. Give GW 6 months to catch up

The reaper hydra looks like the fat cold ones.

I'd say they are on the same level.

I was considering passing aside all these DE miniatures, like I do with 90% of fantasy and 40k new releases these days, but the hydra got my attention, I still need a clearer pic of the heads. It's plastic right?

If the GW Hydra is plastic, that will definitely tip the scales back in favor of the GW version.

I'm pretty sure it is metal though...

I have been browsing a lot of different forums in search of new Dark Elf info. Most people seem to be assuming that the new hydra is plastic (though this may be collective wishful thinking).

However, there are one or two posters out there who stridently insist, over and over, that the new hydra will be metal, with- get this- different heads available (possibly through special order!), and they get quite snarky with those who claim otherwise. But I haven't seen them provide any evidence of their claims, other than referencing "this guy on warseer who's been right before."

Now, I cannot think of a single time that GW has produced a metal model and offered alternative parts for it too. (The steam tank variants don't count, since the parts for them came from already-existing models.)

So if true, it would be a first. I don't think it's true, simply from an economic standpoint. Molds for metal are soft, and wear out rapidly, so making extra parts that won't be used is a big investment in waste. But I kind of hope it is true, since the pictured heads are really bad- it is nice to think there will be alternatives. But I am really hoping for plastic. Easy convertability will save that model from being ebayed as soon as I open the case.

Its hard to tell from the pictures if its metal kind of detail or plastic details... For example the necks texture looks like its metal but other things like the head simple shape and unsharpened teeth looks like plastic.
If its metal this miniature will weight a ton. I'm more interested in it if its plastic. lets hope GW continues the trend of making big kits in plastic.

What was the last monster, redone for a new codex/armybook, that wasn't plastic? Isn't even the Varghulf (or similar) plastic?

Nope. The Varghulf is metal.

I don't know, Alpharius, the Hydra isn't all that bad. I wouldn't even put it in a "bad" catigory really. The Reaper mini is nice too. I'd pay money to see you break out the Reaper mini @ a GW store during a game... heh heh

Let me see, new plastics.
High Elves got a character kit, a mage kit, a new chariot (with options!) kit, and a plastic dragon (with options!).

Vampire Counts got plastic ghouls, plastic dire wolves, new skeletons, new Grave Guard, and the Corpse Cart (with options!). All characters are metal so far.

Dark Elves are getting new plastic Corsairs, new plastic Cold One Knights. No confirmation on the hydra being plastic, in fact it would not surprise me if it were metal. (What would surprise me is if it had options.) I am startled to see a Reaper bolt thrower in the spearhead, that is not a new model... unless it's plastic! Rumor has it that the DE characters will be metal.

Based on that spearhead pic, I'm putting my money on a metal Hydra (and fugly, that's definitely a Trish Morrison sculpt), metal (a.k.a. old) Bolt Thrower and hybrid Cold One Knights. Oh, and that Sorceress is dead sexy, but also metal.

After looking more closely at the pics, I'm also doubting that that is a pic of the Spearhead. I think it's just an ad in White Dwarf for the new Dark Elves. Would they really put an old model in a Spearhead?

For those keeping track, that's 6, count 'em, 6 predictions. Let's see how I do.

Felblade, how are those new plastic skellies and dire wolves? I have'nt had the chance to get to a GW store to look at them since I've moved...

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention a big "THANKS" Fellblade, for posting that piccie of the Nagaroth Raiders, those Cold Ones are finally back to a good looking figure. I really stopped working on my Dark Elf army just because of the fat cartoon looking Cold Ones. I know I could have taken the effort to scrounge up the old metals but I was just taken back by how poor the figures looked. Im going to have to get them collected up and running again. So far Im happy with the look they have overall. Now lets just take a look at those new rules.

The new skellies are fantastic.
The new dire wolves take some getting used to. They are big, really big, like, horse-big. And they are neither freshly dead nor dry bones. More like a week-old corpse, well rotted and juicy. With the right paint job, they look great.

It takes a fantastic paint job to make the ultra-fugly new Dire Wolves look "OK", for me.

Why they couldn't have just gone with horse-big non-decaying, no more juicy than normal for evil wolves is beyond me...

Yeah, whatever you do, don't go look at the new Gamezone zombie wolves.

Meh, Reaper hydra is ok. Lower and beefier than the any GW hydra, but not getting me excited or anything. I still hold out for the Ultraforge hydra, unless we weirded Sophia out for good :S
