Mercutio. It pays when posting joke comments on the internet to indicate STRONGLY that you are indeed trying to be funny. Try using the various smilies available. There are plenty of people out there who will talk about 'zombie Jesus' with gritted teeth. While I have actually been adapt at turning the other cheek - my comment was to educate, not to blow off steam.
Speaking to the readership in general:
The hard truth is some jokes are just not funny to some, in fact many many people. The Dutch cartoons mentioned sparked riots amongst fundamentalists. Also those who dont see their 'humour' appreciated often try to out those people who complain as equally fundamentalist. It becomes a point of tolerate my lack of taste, or I will out you as the Christian/Jewish/moderate Islamic/Agnostic version of a rabid fundamentalist.
We are responsible to not try and take offense, but are also responsible not to try and cause offense. The freedom to cause offense is not real freedom, just chaos, and was not what the farsighted rights bills were envisioned to defend.
"Zombie Jesus" is one of the whips often used by ardent atheists, those not of an honourable 'I calculate that I disblieve' mindset but the increasingly prevelant 'I choose to hate' mindset. It is used to lash people with to rile them up, followed by accusations of intolerence as a double lashing if any counter comment is made. 'Freedom of speech' being the second whip.
Frankly to reiterate. DONT GO THERE.

Actually. I did.
mercutio531 wrote:Disclaimer: Okay, this thread is meant to be humorous and light hearted. Please dont take it too seriously or get offended. Thats not its intent.
And THEN
But my goal of this post was to have as little to do with "certain central truths" and keep the topic as far fetched as possible. In fact the more far fetched the better. Im an OtT kinda guy with my humor.
I then posted the Zombie Jesus pic within that context. Referencing it as Over the Top humor I think would get the point across. And actually, everyone else here talking about Jesus and Vampire Counts and blah blah blah were in fact being funny and light hearted, that was the nature of the thread. Yet you still found it offensive regardless of it context. And actually context is often what its all about.
Orlanth wrote:The hard truth is some jokes are just not funny to some, in fact many many people.
You dont know how exactly right you are. The truth is that there will never one universal humor for all people of all types.
We are responsible to not try and take offense, but are also responsible not to try and cause offense. The freedom to cause offense is not real freedom, just chaos, and was not what the farsighted rights bills were envisioned to defend.
You hit the nail on the head.... Sorta. Some people are going to take offense no matter what, regardless of the circumstances. Offending people isnt the problem, thats going to happen anyways regardless of how you go about your business. TRYING to and setting out to offend people is the problem. But this doesnt mean we have to tape a pillow to ever corner, soften every harsh word, and tread lightly. Though the PC Corporate America sector will tell you you must bland yourself down and subdue your personality as to not offend anyone, at any time, ever. Other people take this idea out of the work place and think that is how we should live our life. 'Dont say this, dont say that... You may offend someone." I say that!
Interracial couples offend some people. Should they hide away afraid to show their face? Homosexual couples? Just by EXISTING they offend some people, should they cease to exist?
Some Americans take offense at simply hearing immigrants speaking their native tounge. Should they be silent as to not offend the scruffy, dirty, possibly crazy, and possibly homeless man? (True Story)
And once again our friend religion. Some people are highly offended by seeing a religious symbol of ANYTHING that isnt their own. Pagans wear a 5 pointed star within a circle, offends some people. Jews wear a six pointed star, no circle, offends some people. The very IDEA, and possibility that Mary had children other than Jesus greatly offends some, even though it makes a lot of sense. God portrayed a being black offends some, even though God is by its very definition without limit or definition. Doesnt matter.
Aaaand comedy. Comedians have for some time now been booed off stage for being offensive, sometimes even arrested. The story of Lenny Bruce springs to mind. All of the best comedians offend someone or other, George Carlin, Robin Williams, Bill Hicks.. And usually all they did was hold a mirror to society's face, and society didnt like what it saw.
Currently, shows like South Park and more recently Family Guy have been deemed offensive. Funny how Simpsons used to be offensive because it had a 10 year old say "Eat My Shorts." South Park though, has really become amazing with its social commentary, which of course many will be offended by, or even refuse to watch it because it is offensive. Thats my favorite. "Its offseive!" "Have you seen it?" "Well no...." Happened with the movie 300, I kid you not.
But, you say, Mercutio, those are totally different. But I tell you, no they arent. If you limit yourself from talking about one, you lose the right to talk about them all. Because where do you draw the line? Okay, we cant talk about Zombie Jesus because it offends someone. Okay then... Well what about <insert anything topical>? Well, no because I heard that offended someone somewhere too. And before you know it we are censoring ourselves and we become dull and colorless. We must always push the boundaries of society to make progress. The J man knew that.
Frankly to reiterate. DONT GO THERE.
The truth is, we HAVE to go there. WWJD? Jesus went there. He didnt aim to be offensive, but he knew what he was gonna do was gonna upset and Tee off a bunch of old rabbis.
I agree dont aim to offend, but dont censor yourself at the cost of who you are.

Contest isn't often enough of a defence. Let us take the topic at hand. What Would Jesus Play might offenbd some hotheads but its a humorous context, no problem to a reasonable person. Zombie Jesus as a concept mocks the Ressurrection, which is taken far more seriously as the Resurrection is the literal core of Christianity. In fact some religious groups connected to but not considered Christian by the mainstream churches (Evangelical Alliance) are categorised as such even on this one issue. The Jehovah's Witnesses for example are essentially Christian in many respects, but deny the physical resurrection.
Even moderate Christians can get very upset over jokes on this issue. For your information I am not seething with anger over this thread, but I know many people it would get upset if they read it, and I dont consider those individuals fundamentalists, or even angry or intolerent people.
If you really want to take the piss out of a religion it helps to really understand the religion.
Some issues are more sensitive than others, you can joke about most Biblical stories but at a start steer clear of from the top of my head three issues.
1. Anything negative about Mary - This really pisses off Catholics, less so others.
2. Anything negative about Mohammed - This really really really pisses off Moslems.
3. Dont mock the Resurrection of Jesus - Most Christians are far more tolerent about other Christ jokes.
You are speaking my language right here. PG dogma is often used as a political weapon to silence people. Some people are told don't offend, others are allowed to do so. It leads to a cultural imbalance.
However there are differences. I am an ardent critic of Islam, both in its doctrines, practies and practices of exteremists who most Moslems themselves criticise. However I wont make ANY jokes or insults about Mohammed. no matter my opinions on Islam. Not just because some people would (literally) kill you for saying them, it would be thoroughly offensive to even moderate Moslems with whome I can and do have frank and friendly discourse a nd would be happy to exchange banter about other issues.
I dont want to appear a dour doctrinarian here, like most people I must admit I enjoy the odd offensive joke, so long as they are told quietly amongst ourselves so as not to offend, and not within earshot of a member of the minority or nationality involved. I think most people are like that. Likewise I am not offended if others quietly have their jokes about my nation culture or faith. The French have plenty of anti-English jokes, and I dont mind hearing those, there would be something wrong with my tolerance levels if I did.
Sadly we hit upon an exception to the rule. there are others. Some more abvious than others. For example f someone posted an N-word heavy joke thread about blacks it would be quickly be deleted, and rightly so. Jesus playing 40K would offend some, Zombie Jesus is a whole different level. You need to understand a religion well if you want to make comedy about it, this doesnt imply you have to share its faith, but you should be aware of its boundaries. Some jokes DO cross the line.

Oooh! Bust out the old Devil Costume from Legend for someone to play Khorne!
And Jesus could work part time as a Kindergarten teacher or something nice like that, but he Fights Crime on the side and The Chaos Crew are always coming up with new plans of treachery and mean things.
There would be lots of fist waving by The Crew every time Jesus foils their plans.

NOt so much God like powers.. Just that Jesus always happens to be in the right place at the right time thing... and he foils their plans by a chain of "lucky coincidences"....
Though I think one episode...
Fade in on Living Room, Khorne has a paper bag set on the coffee table, Nurgle is looking on leeringly...
K: What is in this bag took me seven millenia to acquire. It is very potent, but very fragile. So you arent allowed to touch it.
N: Awww...
At that moment Jesus runs in through the main door, Jumps on the table, smashes the bag with his sandals and we hear small glass breaking, and then as quick as he came in hes gone, even taking time to close the door. Khorne sits there with a WTF just happened look on his face.
