Starcraft is not balanced. It's all rock-paper-scissors. Not at all a good concept. Great game, yes, but not innovative.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

Thank you! I thought the whole board was filled with kids who think the world was created in 1995.
So if we're going to look at roots...
Pong - head to head gaming is born
Pac Man - first game to cross over into popular culture (music, TV show, cover of Time magazine)
Ms. Pacman - The video game sequel is born
Zork - Storylines appear
Bard's Tale - first RPG with graphics (??? let me know if I'm wrong)
Everything since these is just refining the graphics package.

Well they produced more cartrages than there were Atrai 2600s so yeah.
Even funnier, they were dug up years later by some nostalgia merchant to sell.

lol Starcraft is a far from rock paper scissors as you can get....do you follow the korean scene at all? its hands down by far the most balanced RTS of all time...hence why a 10 year old game is being played by pros....the top pros getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars per year and have movie star status....how many 10 year old games are still played on a professional level?
the races are so balanced...the maps is are what tends to sway things like i said....watch a few recent games....jon747 youtube channel to learn more.

I will say this, and it will sound like a fanboy remark; I think that Dawn of War was rather innovative.
It was one of the first games that allowed units to do BOTH melee and ranged attacks. The morale system is new too I think.

Kohan had morale before Dawn of War, but it was a more realistic system. When your units break, they don't just stand there and take damage, they run for their lives. There, Kohan: Immortal Sovreigns (sp?) is a very innovative RTS game, adding great company management and a realistic morale system. AFAIK, it might have been the first RTS game with a cover system as well.

Age of empires had both melee and attack. In fact I'd bet on their being a number of games with this before Dawn of War.

Nothing entirely new here, but it's my list so take it as you may. Probably out of order.
Pong
Pacman
Super Mario Bros
Final Fantasy
Sonic
Pin Bot
Super Mario World
Doom
Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Mortal Combat
Goldeneye
Final Fantasy 3
Nights (saturn game)
FF7
Jurassic Park (the pinball game)
Tekken
Metal Gear Solid
Starcraft
Diablo 2
Halo
Everquest
Madden 02 (or whatever year it was that started the sole-licensing situation for the NFL)
Grand Theft Auto 3
Fable
Gears of War
World of Warcraft
Looking into the future:
Starcraft 2
Diablo 3
I'm a Blizzard Junkie, but I really believe that these games will be nearly as popular and long running as the fore-runners.
I haven't played anything new in years and am missing probably more than a few. From my perspective I look at these games as the benchmarks. They either redefined or defined their respective genre. Without any of these games you would not have the gaming industry at the point it is today. I know it's pretty subjective, but it is what I believe.
