You know, I never really thought about it before, but I really do wish I never started collecting. Compared to the downright scary amount of money and time I've poured into this game since late 2006, I simply haven't gotten my money's worth out of it, and probably never will.

All the talk about a 25% increase is smoke and vapors. I've had two talks with GW US, and while I don't have the exact numbers yet, whatever prices that increase are supposedly in the 3% to 5% range. Battleforces to 95 from 90. etc etc.

I know that's a lot more boring than people running around yelling that the sky is falling.

Who talked to which redshirt about a 25% increase?

For a while, it was cheaper to buy Forgeworld Broadsides than it was to buy broadsides at Canadian MSRP. I just bought two Forgeworld Hyperios whirlwinds for 10% cheaper than 2 normal whirlwinds at Candian MSRP. Since their accountants live in some sort of bizzaro world, and some normal product is already more expensive than the corresponding specialty product, an increase of 25% seems to follow in that same line of logic.

I'm actually more interested in what they do in adjoining markets now that GW North American outfit is under one roof. I suspect it will be more of the same that we have been "enjoying" for the last 10 years. Canada always seems to be gifted with a much higher increase than the US because of our supposed "weak dollar", "cost of doing business in Canada " and "inelastic demand" of the Canadian market. I had hoped that once all mail order was under one roof, that the strange Canadian prices would get sorted out. I can't say for certain, but we've got all sorts of inconsistent pricing like the Crusader/Redeemer hybrid set being 20% cheaper than the standard land raider, and Vindicators/Whirlwinds being 25% more expensive than Predators. Russes are much cheaper than Chimeras. Pricing for individual characters is all over the place as well. I know that pricing is sorted into bands, but at first blush, this seems to fly against that and really doesn't make any sense to me.

I would refer everyone to the official GW U.S. website where you can see the prices for new I.G. battlesets have indeed gone from $90 to $95. As far as I know that's the official word as you can start pre-ordering these now.

Am I missing something? I sure hope not because I really haven't bought anything new since before Christmas... And probably won't for a while. Basically I've been going ebay and have stopped buying new altogether. Instead I've been converting and doing lots of painting just to maximize what I already have. I doubt there will be anything new in m future as I already know I'll be taking a second big pay cut.

Do dakka member feel the effect? will you either:

a) stock up , buy your intended army list for the current price while you can

or

b) buy them in longer intervals into the price increase?

My option has been left out of your 2.. My option is c: GW has priced itself right out of my wallet.

Buying off Ebay and anywhere else where you can find "pre-owned" 40K figures you can often save 30-70% off of retail prices so I think for many shrewd buyers who still want to play and enjoy the game... even a possible price increase of 25% from GW isn't going to spell the end of their fig buying...

BUT

What that size of increase from GW would do is blatantly shout out to everyone (including to the 3 people that didn't already know it) that GW is greedy and in business for one thing and one thing only... to make the most money they can from their customers(suckers). That's what business is all about. That level of price increase (and let's face it... ANY price increase in these recessionary times) is a loud and clear signal that GW is saying to us all... shut yer fecking mouth and buy our pretty plastic toys you brainless lemmings... oh ya and buy more paints while your at it... and the overpriced scenery as well.

They have a quality product that is unique in that it has a huge critical mass and a widespread loyal userbase. People bitch and complain about how expensive it is every year yet the game remains immensely popular worldwide. At some point though a line in the sand will be crossed where enough people will say "NO MORE, this stuff just isn't worth it and I'm getting out and into something less expensive and where I don't feel like a tool for buying over priced plastic army men."

The GW price increases are like that old story of how a frog will jump out of a pot if you pour boiling water on him... but if the water is slowly raised in temperature... they will stay in until they are dead.

That's what GW does... slowly raises the prices up each year and everyone pays a little bit more, mumbles and complains but still sticks around because they love collecting, painting and playing the game. They stay around as the gradual slow increase allows people to look hard and squeeze a little more cash out of their wallets here and there so it doesn't seem too bad.

A jump in prices of 25% all at once would blow the frogs out of the pot... a large portion would simply leap out of the GW money pit and be done with it.

I suspect a 5% increase is much closer to reality as GW doesn't want to kill their cash flow stream and 25% would basically kill off and drive away too many veteran players and almost assuredly turn off any newbies looking to get into the game.

Good luck to GW if they do raise by 25%... there is a good chance there will be a lot of product being sold off by liquidators next year when GW goes into bankruptcy

This seems a much more likely possibility to me... $90 to $95 rather than anything higher than that.

So FW prices are not going to increase? I've been eyeing the FW tau battlefleet gothic... they're beauties and they're already basically cheaper than ordering the metal BFG tau models through the specialty games page on GW's site

I almost bought a can of GW spray paint last week until I noticed that it sells for £8. So I bought some 'Army Painter' spray paint instead.

Last weekend I bought the female Commissar model (I've wanted to own one for years) for £10, thats only £3 more than a stock commisar from a GW store and the dame price as Commisar Yarrik is new.

GW price rises somewhat pass me by. Their stuff is too expensive now and by the sounds of this will continue to be.

Good question... Anyone know about FW?

And @ to the moon, I believe everything you say is absolutely true. Business is business and there will always be some sort of manipulation involved, but sometimes that's a good thing. As a retail manager and successful closer, I sometimes to manipulate people into buying one step above what they're currently looking at because I absolutely know they won't be happy if they settle for less. It's all about service because at the end of the day, what do you have other than your reputation? Obviously, this is completely lost on GW, but that's what happens when you become a multinational conglomerate. It's inevitable as you lose control at a local level and become bankrolled by investors rather than customers.

I don't think I'll be buying anything from GW again. I'm going to finish painting my 4x Chaos armies that I already own (which I got for less than half price... thank you eBay ) and then just play with that. I'm sick of how the quality of everything (except the models themselves) has gone down yet the prices skyrocket. Look at White Dwarf for instance... back ~10 years ago that was the greatest magazine of all time (slight exaggeration) but now what's the point of it? "Here is what is coming out, buy it now!"

I don't know if anyone else heard this but apparently all part time employees in North American stores are getting fired. 2 of my friends got fired the day of... no warning or anything (ie they didn't even have time to look for another job).

Clearly the only solution now is to rob the store and re-cast your own models...

VIVE LE RESISTANCE!!

(NOTE: Before you freak out, that last bit was sarcasm...)

EDIT: I need a good Sci Fi miniature game that isn't made by GW... any suggestions?

As my annual buy will be before the price increase, I guess that I'm effectively "stocking up" to "complete" things, but it's not specifically related to the price increase. More that this is a big Guard year, and there's a lot of stuff that I want, so I'm going to get it.

What the price increase *will* do is cut back my future purchases.

Personally, as GW keeps bumping prices, and my collection grows, I find myself less wanting to add to things.

At this point, I think I'd only be interested in the following:
- NEW Eldar Jetbikes & Vyper
- Eldar superheavies
- Warlord Titan
Otherwise, I think I can wait pretty much indefinitely.

I'll just start buying my stuff from other manufacturers and borrowing the rulebooks. I'm liking an awful lot of Wargames Factory stuff and I also like Ramshackle. Frankly with the new 28mm multipart plastics from other companies I'll probably switch to them ironically most likely to Foundry.
