My choice for the most versatile HS choice is three typhoon speeders.
Not only can they throw out 6 BS4 str8 antitank/instakill shots after moving 12", but they can rain template and HB death on weedy troops.
...and the biggest advantage over the other options is, they don't take up a heavy slot!

@Flavius Infernus:
If you one is allowed Imperial Armor, then the Tempest is an option (for White Scars players).
But yes the Typhoons are beasty, but my issue with them is cost and durability (even with the nice range)...but that is going out of the scope of Hvy support choices (with respect to taking the OP's question at face value.), I understand that there are other units in different FoC's that can be tasked with the 'hvy' support, I myself use 9 Attack bikes instead of any hvy support.
My 7 Cents.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I do that as well. But 3 2 MM landspeeders are hard to pass up. tho there expenseive, they are no doubt one of the best anti tank units marines can drop.

LS with 2 MM look intimidating, but it's the moving so slowly to shoot both weapons (6") that bothers me.
I guess my problem is with the rule set and not the unit itself...
And then there's the durability issue...
My 7 Cents.

yeah the slow movement sucks but is well worth it. I usually deep strike the unit in, blow away a tank thats usualy of more value, if it gets poped it's done its job, if it doesnt move it and pop something else.

Vanilla Land Raider with a multi-melta looks pretty versatile. It's a 6.5" x 5" piece of impassable terrain that moves 6" per turn firing double twin-linked lascannons from turn 1, while providing cover for squishy Marines moving behind it (and transported inside it); tank shocks units sitting on an objective (claiming it with the onboard troops); or--if desperate--speeds 12" into a Leman Russ' side arc, unloads a combat squad with a meltagun and fires away with a 48.15% chance of popping it.
If immobilized on the first turn it can still pop Nob Bikers and T4 characters, or damage high-Toughness/no invulnerable save monsters and even a low armour vehicle at 48" if necessary. There are faster, shootier, and more awesome options out there I have no doubt, but when it comes to versatility I have yet to see a Heavy Support option that beats the GHLR.
Edit: Just noticed the Leman Russ has a side armour of 13 nowadays. Lowered the probability of destroying it.

I've had a soft spot for the Standard Landraider myself lately. It's the least likely of the 3 to eat a multi melta, 2 lascannons and a multi melta upgrade are great for shooting light vehicles and monstrous creatures, and it can run a unit up to score/contest in later turns. Totally worth 250+ points.

I just played an apocalypse game where I used all of the marine heavy support. out of all of them my devies did the most damage killing 9 carnifex 2 warhound titans, and a leaman russ battle tank company. Of course that was 3 lascannon devie squads but still quite impressive. My raiders were all fairly effective, but were all killed off by the second turn, as well as my preadators and vindicators. whirlwinds did some damage to infantry but not enough to be effective. So I again state I prefer, devies over all other marines heavy support.

Okay, I'm not sure if this is appropriate, (I'm a noob, I'm sorry) but what if you magnetize the Dev squads so you can have a specialized squad depending on what your facing?
It does come w/ like 8 guns, so you might as well put them to use w/ some extra heads and torsos.

You'd need to juggle points around as well as guns, and it's generally not considered sportsmanlike to adjust one's list depending on who you're facing.

The LRC is my favorite Heavy for SMs.
No other SM tank can compare to the LR chasis, and no other LR varient does a better job at delivering its payload (largest capacity+frag launchers), killing tanks (TL AC+MM is better than TL LCs... although the LRR is the same there), and killing infantry (can fire every weapon when moving 6").
All this combined makes the LRC stand head and shoulders above the rest of the SM heavy choices, IMHO.

when i bought my devie squads, i bought 2 boxes and a tac squad, it lets you make all of the weapons included (4 LC 4 HB, 4 PC, 3 ML and 2 MM) and thats probly all the devies youll ever need.

Take Master of Forge, Take 6 Dreads (3 Elite, 3 Heavy).
Then I go for the 2-TL Autocannon version. 4 Str 7 shots, re-roll misses, wound most on 2+, good vs. armor and MC/IC.

I find theres very little my marines cant mop up after my two vindicators roll through.
Admittedly, my 2 lascannon razorbacks make their job easier. AV14 is a problem to get rid of no matter how you look at things.

Ummmmm Im not sure I think inbetween a devestator squad, or land raider. I don`t think a thunder fire cannon beacuse if the techpriest gets killed you cannot use it. probably most people are going to try and prove me wrong and please do beacuse I would like to learn. Anyway devestators have five members so you have to kill five models, and Land Raiders just have awesome armour! Automatically Appended Next Post: Altough razorback and vindactor line break with predators sounds nice..... Maybe whirlwinds at the back..... no I`m going to far.
