Er for those who knew Moses as a punk kid, whats a LARP?
EDIT: I saw the youtube. Only my bad eyesight prevented me from running screaming down the haul (which no one would notice here)

Ok whats LARP vs. SCA? They lok the same to me?

wouldn't LARP; pretending to "see" a 200lb. heavily-muscled warrior when I actually see a 120lb. flabby dude in a tabard stretches my pretending muscles beyond their capacity. Also, packets of rice/birdseed/whatever are not LIGHTNING BOLTS, despite what some may tell you, repeatedly.

I also wouldn't do SCA; wrapping myself in a cut-up Kydex barrel, or paying hundreds of dollars to wrap myself in armor, stretches my good sense beyond its capacity. Also, I refuse to bow down to a CPA or computer programmer, simply because he happens to have a crown and kissed enough ass (or other things) to become "king".

Instead, I prefer to whale the sh!t out of people, sans armor (unless I want it), sans magic, and sans the "I'm a 12th level half-demon, half-vampire, half-werecat death knight!" and "I am the Duke of Kakapoopoopeepeeshire!" (with historically-accurate heraldry). I go, I beat people mercilessly (and don't go to jail for it), I come home; nice and simple.

Frazzled...

Its stands for Live Action Role Play.

Imagine D&D but instead of miniatures and paper you dress up like your character, grab a foam weapon, and have at thee!

Do not confuse LARP with SCA. (Society For Creative Anarchy) which dons real 16g steel armor/weapons and beats the snot out of each other.

Ayah I'm trying to understand the difference. SCA uses real (assuming dulled) metal weapons whereas LARP uses the foam stuff like in the movie Role Model?

Also larping has more of a back story to it(well most of them anyway) than just going out there and beating other people with a sword.

Check out the movie Darkon,it was cool.

**UPDATED**
Frazz: Yeah LARP uses Boffer weapons (Foam over a soft core) SCA uses either real steel with rounded edges, or rattan core with grey pipe insulation with duct tape for added strength. Yes, its really hard. Softer then steel, but hard enough to stand up to it.

I think I've seen SCA'ing once in a while at the Giddings fairgrounds when I pass through.

I'd die in the Texas heat with that on. Serously. It was freeking 101 Saturday.

EDIT:
That looks really FUN!. Now that I could afford to do such I am too old to do such.

LoL. Pepsi Boy drives my point home though!

Yeah, check out the squirrel armour if you like that!

Here is more:

LARP

Notice the soft foam weapons and shields, and how nobody is wearing armour cause the weapons cant hurt you.

SCA

The video speaks for itself.. though doesnt show any of the metal on metal fighting.

LOL,well it's coolish to me.
I do worry though that it has rather a bleak future. As videogames get more realistic I think people will get into them more. Thus spelling the end for men running around the woods in plate armour.

Absolutely.

It's the same with figure games.

Frazz-

You're never too old. There's a bunch of "older gentlemen" who do full-contact, and as long as you don't try out your wire-fu fantasies, you should be alright. Some helpful linkage:

If you think you can handle the heat and price of heavy armor - Society for Creative Anachronism (http://www.sca.org/)

If you'd rather just hit people and not boil in the process - Dagorhir (http://www.dagorhir.com/) or Belegarth (http://belegarth.com/), whichever has a group nearest (there's really no difference between the two, except for a little more LARPiness to the Dagorhir community).

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Also do note there are a few (well more than a few tbh, blinkin loads) in LARP that use SCA level armour etc, and just use the softer weaponry.

For example the Lions in Lorien Trust are based around Knights and a kingdom based on old Albion, and their main group of knights are quite scary to behold when you watch them go past all wearing platemail. (well at least they where 10 odd years go, although I assume its the same now.)

As with all past times some are more dedicated than others, and you see some bloody well impressive costumes.

My personal faves have included Orcs using nfl style shoulder pads to look larger. (Although their leader was about 6'7, so was absolutely huge anyway.)
A Stone troll, who had an odd tendancy to wear a sombero.
A winged Demon which was an amzing costume.
Oh and the aforementioned Skaven, who looked really good, proper fur based masks, hooded and heavy robes, I think it was a grey seer and a body guard.

As a former tarantula one of the most mind melting things you'll see is when you spot parents taking the young kiddies around with them and a couple of five year olds walk past you dressed as a Drow.

its amusing, but not something I've been willing to do with my own kids, thus partially the reason for the huge gap since I last attended an event.

I larped back in the early 90s (I was holidaying in England at the time. Mates and I went along to one. Can't recall which group it was - maybe 'labyrinth' or something?

Played two games that day. Once as the "hero" (PC) group and the other as the "monsters".

That was the day I learned how hard 15 year olds could hit with a nerf sword.

We did end up pummelling them something shocking, though. Serve the little bleeders right. Bunch of orcs, out for a friendly stroll, set upon by these yoofs.

Larping is pretty much horrible. I mean honestly, dressing up and going out and whacking each other with foam swords?

I would be afraid I would get too worked up over the guy throwing foam darts at me. Drop kick him in the chest or something.

That would be fun though.....

SCA doesn't use the metal weapons very much anymore. It is almost entirely rattan.

I am still making my armor for SCA. Stainless steel is a BITCH to work with. But for the amazing price of FREE, I'll keep bashing and cutting until I can make it work.

Hmm, I think that may very well depend on where you are at Mattlov.

Around here its nothing but metal for any kind of even and rattan for practice.

I did the SCA for a bit in college. it was ok, but I mostly was into it for the women. I went to that big war in pittsburgh and that was about it for me. I just thought it got silly.. you have people with these costumes that date back 100's of years and they try to be all authentic, and they call each other by their little medieval names, but talk about computers and star trek the whole time.

I went to a game con a long time ago in NJ, and the vampire LARP folks were just silly (and smelly). Equally smelly were the star trek LARPers. One trek kid even had a lightsaber and a whole story describing why the people of his planet invented them. That guy prolly went on to create the Pan Fo...

So, yeah, LARP seems like it could be fun with the right people, but it's just something I don't see me ever getting into.
