And one of these... (oh, how very stylish of you Redbeard)

And he would most definitely be Mod'ing in style with one of these...

To have one but not all of these is just barbaric.

I wouldnt have the friends I have now. I most likely would have drank the money away or spent it on videogames. Probably both at the same time.

I would have more Star Wars toys, spend even more time playing video games, but also have a lot more money.

I wouldn't have my three lit display cases or the hobby corner of the living room.

I would still be a bigger nerd than most of the posters here.

As if on cue, you hear two people singing from the stairwell, and the door is opened and a pair of very smelly, very dirty guardsmen stumble in, completely drunk, and covered in vomit, and immediately collapse unconsious on the porch. You drag them to their beds, realising that they will not be waking up for some time.

Well, not being much of a gamer myself my circle of friends would not have changed. However my love of 40k makes for a pretty good friend/girlfriend/wife test. See, at some point in all those relationships I show my massive collection of minis. If someone will accept you with all your flaws and a few hundred minis, then you've got a keeper. I would also like to point out that I would have far less money then I have now. After awhile its hard to justify plastic men( especially when there are so many unpainted). However fishing gear and guns are always useful and my wife has never said no to the purchase of either.

Money aside, I'd have never met a good friend and my comic strip wouldn't be a few months behind schedule. Also wouldn't have found one more thing for me and my grandfather to talk about.

Well, Wargaming has shaped my whole life.

Wargames as a Child:
My Father was a Cpt. in the Marine corp and he gave me an OCS officers manual, (and every GI Joe toy ever made). I learned about squad tactics from there (in second grade), so I guess that's where it started.

Chess as a Child:
My mother taught me to play chess when I was in 3rd grade.

Army teenage friends:
Half of the Wargames club I was in, in jr. high and high school, went off to fight in the 1st Gulf War. I wouldn't have known any of them without Wargames. One was even in the 101st, he is still there in Ramadi TODAY with my other roomate.

(If' you're reading this Duncanson and Sizemore, Godspeed, come home safe guys!)

Moved out from Mom's basement...
...because of wargaming, (Before I was 30, doesn't that set some kind of Not = Nerd criteria? LOL) with a friend of mine I had met at a games convention auction.

Job from Adeptus Titanicus
When I was 16 I met a great friend of mine at a games convention playing Adeptus Titanicus. He got me my first real 40 hour a week job as a carpenter and painter at a prop company because he liked my models. He made me a shop foreman when he bought a competing company. I did that on and off for 15 years.

40k saved my career
After college, I lost my 1st career job as a direct result of 911 when the US Gov. appropriated contract funds at my worksite to create the department of homeland security. I was unemployed for a year following 911 and the tailings of the Ecrash. I met another great friend of mine in a game store when I was unemployed and he helped me get my career started in computers by referring me at Raytheon. He also liked my models.

1st House Roommates
I bought a house last year and I rent to 2 room mates, both of which are gamer friends of mine. One of which is in the Sandbox right now.

...

So it turns out the old adage:

Be nice to a Nerd, you may work for one some day wasn't that far off. Lots of networking to be done in the war gaming community!

... Not to change the theme of the thread...

<joke>
I was really kind of hoping all those posts in the thread about getting a girlfriend by playing 40k weren't jokes and lies. I am pretty certain that's the one thing you can't find in wargaming circles...

...unless you are REALLY into flying cats, fairies and like country buffet, A LOT....

Which is OK I guess...

Well, first off probably be able to save money and have more of it. Not be the class geek but wouldn't have met most of my mates who are mostly 40k players and are AWESOME!

Also probably got out more because instead of spending my time outdoors and playing with healthy young people.(I'm 13) I spend my weekends and weekdays cramped up either in my room or at GW in a cloud of glue fumes from all the gluing, playing with underweight or worrying but nice friends.

But yea, it's DEFINATELY worth it!

Well I would have more money... probably also have an easier time explaining to people what I was going to do any given weekend. And if I hadn't decided to play my bf would have driven me nuts and probably wouldn't be with him lol.

I'd probably not be in the process of deregistering from my university if it wasn't for Warhammer. The fun i've had painting and converting minis convinced me that being an academic is killing me inside, i need to do something with my hands! So i'm trying to get into a jewelry making course right now, the "homework" i've had to do is so similar to modelling that i'm sure this is for me.

Also wouldn't have met a buddy of mine, who's also my GM at my hopefully-soon-to-be-semi-regular D&D game

Well, first off I would have never seriously considered model building again

I also would have missed some good times with friends, but we probably would have found something else to do (that would have been even less productive)

Thats my experience aswell, if a girl cannot handle that in your spare time you paint and play with toys with your mates shes not worth keeping, many a foolish girl has been dumped due to the patented "GW Test". However the one i'm trying to get with now can not believe that i spend so much time playing with them and finds infinitely cool which is a bonus.

Tbh though I can't imagine my life without wargaming, I started from such an early age that its just part and parcel of me now, but like alot of people here, i'd probably drink more, play more computer games and annoy a hell of alot more women from trying (failing) to chat them up in pubs and clubs.

Havent understood it yet, but wargamers seem more content and relaxed about life than anyone else on this planet, its a strange sense of relaxation I get whenever i'm painting or playing that just allows me to forget about all of the worries in life for a few hours and evening.

When you give total control to a computer, it’s only a matter of time before it pulls a Skynet on you and you’re running for your life.
