Wrex's grammar school essay about his heritage

"MY family is from mars, I am from pluto... and I think I have a Native American uncle or something... THE END"

I am white... rather I am caucasian, which in essence is about as deep as my history gets. Europe, and some gypsy blood or something?

...Hmmm, it appears I ran into a full page of my own. What to do, what to do... hmmm....

Tic Tac Toe... sounds good to me as well Wrex... Who was that? Hmmm...

Forever alone

I'm a Brit. My father's side of the family is Irish and my mother's side is English. I'm the only one in the family who says 'scOWNs' though. Funny that.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

My mother's side has the family tree going back into the triple digit's of A.D. I think, around 400 A.D. or so. Dunno on how accurate it is.

My mother's side is German, decesended from minor Germanic nobility.

My father's side is a little unclear. I know for a fact that there is some German and Native American [Cherokee, iirc].

But, I am damn proud of my family. From both sides of my family, hard work has been extolled. My grandfather on my mom's side was an auto-mechanic until the day he died. My dad has been a lumberjack for almost 35 years now.

American Indians it was a rare day when some white didn't visit my
office and proudly proclaim that he or she was of Indian descent."

"Cherokee was the most popular tribe of their choice and many people
placed the Cherokees anywhere from Maine to Washington State. Mohawk,
Sioux, and Chippewa were next in popularity. Occasionally, I would be
told about some mythical tribe from lower Pennsylvania, Virginia, or
Massachusetts which had spawned the white standing before me."

"At times I became quite defensive about being a Sioux when these white
people had a pedigree that was so much more respectable than mine. But
eventually I came to understand their need to identify as partially
Indian and did not resent them. I would confirm their wildest stories
about their Indian ancestry and would add a few tales of my own hoping
that they would be able to accept themselves someday and leave us
alone."

"Whites claiming Indian blood generally tend to reinforce mythical
beliefs about Indians. All but one person I met who claimed Indian blood
claimed it on their grandmother's side. I once did a projection backward
and discovered that evidently most tribes were entirely female for the
first three hundred years of white occupation.

I can trace the surname back a long way also. My grandfather kept up with all the clan news, that went by the wayside when he died. It seems according to my grandfather that everyone hated our family. Half the family supported Scotland, the other half were loyal to England. Both sides did not trust the clan, both Scots and English stripped my family of any sort of title. I hear they are now back, but it was a funny story when ol grand Dad told it. I am proud to be an American, and I am proud of my roots as well as being from New Jersey!!!

I'm American and proud of it.

10 years ago, through researching our family tree, my mother found out were were direct desendents of Edward Doughty, one of the pilgrams. Knowing that one of my 8th-great grandfathers came over on the Mayflower makes Thanksgiving that much more special. He was the second-to-last person to sign the Mayflower compact, and was part of the first recorded duels in the Americas. His punishment was to be chained to the other duelist for 24 hours, but they were released early.

So yeah, I'm pretty proud of my family's past and present. It certainly explains a lot.

My dad was from Dundrum, Northern Ireland - Mum born on a British military base nr. Omagh, Northern Ireland to english parents.
My surname 'Magee' originates from the same area.
Born and raised in England - 100% proud to be a TRUE BRIT.
A few things: The genetic make-up of the British Isles is still overwhelmingly 'Celtic' (not a term I'm particularly fond of, due to middle class hippies...) or 'Native Briton' if you prefer. The influence of Romans, Vikings, Saxons, Angles and Jutes on our lineage is often wildly over-stated and can only be found in around 20% of the British population. Check out 'Blood of the Isles' by Bryan Sykes - fascinating, if a bit dry.
Also, it is religious people who peddle myths - science uses empiricism to gather large amounts of documentary and physical evidence before presenting something as fact. Religion is based upon mythology handed down over several thousand years.

EVOLUTION IS NOT A MYTH - IT IS BASED ON HARD EVIDENCE AND DOES NOT REQUIRE YOU TO TAKE A FAITH POSITON. CAN RELIGION SAY THE SAME?

100% ATHEIST AND PROUD

I don't think you were baiting, I just think you could have let it go. A lot of people hold the view, and if you challenge it everytime it's mentioned in passing, you'll end up turning a lot of threads in evolution debates. It's hard to let things go, there's about ten things in that 'you lied' thread that I really, really want to tell people is wrong, but the thread has moved on to debate about what 'republic' means. But all that early stuff keeps calling me... surely if I point my point across succinctly? Then they'll quickly accept their earlier claims were wrong and it won't turn into a ten page load of blaargh... No, I must be strong.

Meanwhile, back on topic I was talking to a friend the other day about the cricket, and noticed he'd given up any pretense of supporting Australia, and was now openly supporting just England. His parents are English, but he was born in Australia, has lived his whole life in Australia and the one time he visited England he didn't seem that impressed. He said it was from the time he'd spent teaching in remote areas, he'd been to places and seen things that made him not want to be Australian. I said surely there were places in London that were just as grim. 'Sure,' he said, 'but I don't have to live there.'

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
