What I want to see is at the start of the movie you see a small human family in a hab eating a meal and Listening to the vox (all imperial propaganda) Suddenly there is a knock on the door. Family pauses and father asks who it is. More knocking and father goes to the door. Standing there is a commisar who throws him a las rifle a helmet. Three guys behind the commisar grab the guy and take him to street level and throw him in a chimaera. Along with 20 other people the commisar asks how many have fired a gun. Only 3 raise their hands. Commisar then goes through the method of using a las rifle. All this time the father is looking out the window into what you can tell is a hive city. All this time a little B**** in the corner is demanding to know whats going on. Naturally the commisar at the end of his how to speech promptly blows the guys brains out. Looking out of the apc the city starts too look as though it has been bombed/shelled. Suddenly a thump sounds loudly on top of the apc. A moment of quiet follows suddenly broken by a deafening WAAAAAAAAAAGH! and a power klaw slashes through the apc and cut the commisar's torso off at the waist. A nob sticks his head in and screams again. ML on another chimaera shoots the ork off and the father sticks his head out of the apc to see whats happening. He looks up and sees pillars of fire descending strait towards a horde of orks that are running screaming toward the convoy of apcs. Streaks land and disgorge the Angels of death who promptly engage the orks.
An all right intro into a 40K movie?

Save for the case of "Bad Hollywood Writing" syndrome, it would be -alright-.
The biggest problem is: If your world is being invaded and a Hive city is already to the point of being shelled heavily, you'd be well aware and probably put as much space between your family and the combat zone as humanly possible. Evacuations off-world come to mind. I don't think an Imperial family would sit there eating dinner while a war was waging a few minutes' drive away, and then be clueless as to what was happening when a Commissar shows up knocking.
I also see such introductions as being guilty of appealing to the simple-minded viewer. There's not really any establishment of characters or any real plot explainations to movies that start this way, and those exeptions are usually either a) poorly done or b) historical in nature and thus already known to those that know the event in question.
Intros like these are of the "All action, All the time!" flavour, and don't generally give much over to an intellectual plot aspect. They're the movies that try to stuff as many gunfights, car chases, stereotypical villains and explosions into 90 minutes as they possibly can. It's not a good way to start out a movie franchise for a series that's all about the storyline.

+1
Just like in the game, the SMurfs are just here to introduce people to the universe. I'd even bet on there being an Imperial Guard element in Ultramarine, it's just that the main story will be about the Ultras themselves, not the IG that will likely be featured to some extent. I do forsee an IG as a supporting character though.
Anyway, yea, GT is right, and myself (among others) have already said that they're just running this as a test to see how big the market for a 40K movie chain is. If a whole load of people buy this DVD, they'll make more 40K movies, and they'll make several of those long indeed. Even Multi-Disc epics that could take 3 or 4 hours to watch from start to finish. It's much the same reason as to why they only made it Direct-to-DVD. They don't want to spend too much time or money on a movie to make it theatre quality (Not to mention the costs of getting a license for theatre showings) until they know it'll actually sell. A strategy that's quite smart and, in my opinion, completely fair.

Sorry if it came out that way it was supposed to stress that nobody is told anything and the smother of information. Hell the main joke our our group's discussion was that it would have nothing to do with the plot or anything just there before the movie proper began.
Anyways that version was the most popular. My personal would be instead of a war zone in the same city He would be sent offworld and never get the chance to see his family/ get an explanation rather than "hey you're under 40 and we need soldiers. Deal with it" line.

It's the most popular because it's the most widely appealing. Nothing wrong with it, I'd just rather not see the first full-length 40K movie turn out that way.
And 'under 40' doesn't exist in 40K Some of the Tanith, for example, are in their mid 50's and are still serving as line infantry

Dorden and Mad Larkin I suppose but then again in the book Only In Death Dorden talks about he would have been eligible for retirement along time ago. I would think Larks would have that same line if asked. So there is an age line there somewhere. How much it is stressed in times of emergency of course though is probably not usually an issue.

You're expecting a 40k movie to have a deep plot or otherwise be thought provoking? Would that be like Duke Nukem: The Motion Picture being a deep philosophical commentary on our times?

Umm... Duhrrrr...
No.
I'm saying that I hope for a movie that's at least got a deeper plot than: "Intro Credits, Flashy Title, *BOOM* *DAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKA* *BOOM* <quick shot of villain reciting hard-boiled dialogue>*BOOM* *RATTA-TAT-TAT* *BOOM* <Carchase, followed by fight scene, before the fight is interruped by...> *BOOM* *FWOOSH* *BOOM* *DAKKADAKKADAKKA* <Insert more cheesy villain lines, followed by another car chase to villain's lair, wherein there's more *BOOM*, much more *DAKKA* and a grossly exaggerated and drawn out fistfight to the death, where the hero wins and gets the hot chick at the end>Cut, Credits, Lights.
In a nutshell, I just don't want it to be the practical brainrot and garbage that's come from Hollywood recently. Luckily, Codex Studios is in London, so there's none of the Hollywood retardation, and it's close enough that GW can tell them to tone down the suck if it ends up getting that bad.

Actually, I'm betting that is pretty much the plot, though more grimdark. GW will insist that the hot chick is not to be saved, she'll be eaten by tyranids or be possessed by a demon or something, wherein the hero will either get angsty and shoot her or get pious and shoot her. Also, the villein may possibly win, or at least escape to return with a 13th Black Crusade or something...

If they do the Horus heresy it will probibly be in a similer formet to the books and would take several movies to cover completly.
i know lots of people play or at least follow 40k but a more generic beginning will allow it to become mainstream and appeal to a wider audience. Leave the complicated stuff for later productions. The war for armaggadon would make a great Theatre debu story.
BTW; just saw the new bionicle movie and it was very well done, they had what's his name who did Optimis Prime in Transformers as Mata Nui. Great voice, perfect for Calgar.

At least if Hasbro made toys, GW could use them to give the little model breaking Feths some worthless assembly line product to destroy when they visit a store, instead of the 28mm armies we put hours of work (and often blood, coffee, and cursing) into.
