nothing ruins a good rpg session more than being set up next to a gw tourny area where they are asking everyone to waaghh at the top of their lungs at regular intervals.
It ruins a lot of things. All the years I've been in the hobby I've never been a fan of the practice and I see plenty of other hobbyists in stores that are not so into it either, yet GW constantly pushes it at events even when the crowd is not really game for it. Even when the majority of a crowd is clearly not into doing it, employees often will push it to the point of distraction, ignoring the fact that the customers would be having more fun if they just let it pass and moved on with the game. When an event is not specifically Ork related, the "waaggh" yelling makes even less sense. Thankfully, not everyone who plays these games is loud all the time nor do all of us Warhammer enthusiasts necessarily like to yell at the top of our lungs before every game. I wish GW would read their crowds a bit better and stop pushing the "yelling thing" so much, but after twenty years in the hobby I know it's futile to keep hoping for this. Hearing protection should not be essential equipment for playing tabletop miniatures games, but sadly, it really would come in handy quite often.

Goes against the GW sales mentality of A: upsaling and B: pushing. I worked inthe seattle bunker for a while and we were taught the GW principal of always standing next to the customer keeping them talking and pushing for an upsale. I have to say I hated that job truthfully cause seriously who likes employees over enthusiastically talking to them like children and when your going in for one specific thing trying to push everything else on you. I can see a freindly reminder at the registar for hobby supplies but the rest I mean COME ON>..... Insurance salesmen have more respect then they do.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

Yeah, some salesmen don't know when to quit or how to read a customer. Fortunately, most of the GW employees in my area for the past few years are better than that and they do a better job of sensing when help is needed and when they might be in the way of a sale instead. For the past few years GW seems to be doing a better job with training and with whom they select in the first place as employees, at least in the stores I frequent.
Back on topic, I haven't seen a lot of news about the main topic elsewhere. I figured after someone posted this topic thread here there'd be a firestorm all over the US community if not farther out as well. I wonder what the reaction in the US hobby community will be once other forums pick this up now that someone on dakkadakka has made this Games Day news fairly well known.

The single US Games Day for 2010 will be in Baltimore and apparently in August.

Last time I checked, the central part of the US was in MO. We have a large enough place to have GD in our area AND we have enough retailers to have sales managed by them, and another reason is that people from all around the US would show up. Kinda doubtful that people on the west coast would make the trip out to the east coast for a ONE day event. That is just my two cents on that subject.
You have a GD in your area. It's called Adepticon.
I'd rather see the money spent on making Baltimore a better event, and hopefully go back to 2 days. They can throw support to Adepticon to make it better.
whats adepticon? down here in florida we don't have any GW stores, mabe having a gamesday here would boost sales at the local retailers and convince GW that florida is NOT just old farts (no offense. but we do have a thriving games community down here)
that and it would be more convincing to take the whole family on vacation and skip over to the orlando convention center for a day.
