They used to bring the Bitz Wagon. I thought that was pretty cool.

And over the last year they opened a ton of stores in LA. Oh wait the other answer: no.

Northridge: Closed
Glendale: Closing

Mission Vellajo: Opened

If they open any stores, they might be strip sites to replace ones already closed. GW LA has sucked for a year or so and only seems to be getting worse...

Kinda sucks if there is only one next year, but GW have been moving to this for a while. THere are not even GT at the GD's any more, they are all at Indy cons....

I've been to every US Games Day held in Maryland since the first one in 1993. All of them were fun, even the less than spectacular show this year. Games Day 2009 was disappointing when compared to the other 15 Maryland Games Day events before it, but I'm still glad I went.

I certainly am hoping next year's show lives up to the promise of earlier Games Day events. Some of the events years ago, back when there was only the one event in the US, were nothing short of amazing. You felt as if you were in another world when you walked in the door. The atmosphere of the show was really something special just a few short years ago and I'd love to see a return to that level of planning and showmanship.

All it would really take for me to want to go again is them running an RTT.

The years before, if you weren't playing in the RTT, there was just so little to do that couldn't be had better by just going to a local hobby shop for games/building/etc.

Their "news releases" and stuff was all old info you'd have if you read sites like this, there was very little to be had.

Two years ago I played in the WHFB tourney which was fantastic and I got to meet/talk to Phil Kelly, which was awesome.

But without the Tourney, I'd be bored out of my mind with the "other" activities they have going on.

With the way Baltimore GDs got worse and worse over the last few years, I just didn't see the point in going any more.

I'm not a Tourney player but I liked going to check out new releases, see Demon entries, go to see Design Studio seminars and play an occassional demo or pick-up game.

Of late, the lack of previews, the tight-lipped studio staff, the same old tables, lack of game club support and a painting competition that makes people not even bother because they expect the same old painters to win has been depressing and a waste of my money.

And why don't they do a huge diorama board like they do in the UK every year? I think the last one in the US was in 1999 or so ... the IG vs Dark Eldar Beachhead.

Hey, even getting Forge World was a bonus until they never had anything in stock, even if I did pre-order. I might as well pay the crazy UK shipping fees ... it's cheaper than going to Games Day !!

And then they cut it back to a single-day "event" and charged almost double for it and less content ?!?!! Why, it was like a live-action White Dwarf issue !!!!

Yeah, I'm a tad bitter ... I used to LOVE Games Days until GW messed them up with their "thinking" !! I hope they can recreate the magic of what it once was.

Sorry ... rant over.

As far as location, Baltimore is the best location for me, being in New England, but it does alienate a lot of the country.

And, if GW is trying to make a single event more cost-effective, why wouldn't they locate it centrally, near their distribution warehouse to save costs? Why ship all that event product east if they don't have to ?

Why wouldn't they locate it centrally? Because GW US HQ has always been in Maryland and they can get a whole lot more cool stuff into a convention center 30 minutes drive from their main office than they can halfway across the country and they can do it with a fraction of the cost and hassle. That's why Games Day used to be so big and well supported when the only one in the US was in Baltimore.

Back when Maryland had the only US Games Day, I used to meet people there from all over the country including as far away as California. The hall was packed with people as attendance was massive since it was the only such event in the whole US for an entire year. Frankly, I'm looking forward to that level of excitement again.

The area GD is in is pretty good though. Jump off the highway and your at the stadium, inner harbor, and Convention Center area. Just don't walk 6 blocks away from the water, as the neighborhood changes drastically.

Another important point is the population density on the east coast. From where I live (Philly), you can be in NYC in less than 2 hours. Or Baltimore. Or DC in 2.5 or so. There is a much, much greater population within driving distance of Baltimore than Chicago.

I'm running a fever, and home sick for the day.

So like any normal person, I'm going down to my basement and start cuttin out the plywood pieces I need for a pair of 36" long, tracked, feets. Painting them red. You can probably figure out what my GD display might include this year. Minas Tirith was cool, but I want to do something a bit bigger.

Sad to say that these GT's and GD's are heading to a way of the past with games workshop and I think it sucks. The lack of coverage over the years in white dwarf brought down a big desire for me to read it personally. Then they take these great events and well rip them apart and then finally drop them and say "oo were revamping them" this of coarse is one big lie they put out to cull peoples feelings.
Granted off the events themselves they may not make as much money but the product people bought in prep for GT's and what nots well more then made up for it. Games workshop sadly strayed away from the hobby and more to the business in hopes of increasing profits. Sadly this in turn lowered their profits and with horrible business decisions like spending 15million a year on lord of the rings rights has resulted them into financial ruin.
They close major stores in cities only to open 9 yes 9 in seattle tacoma? but they closed down the ones here in new england that brought in more money. I used to work at the battle bunker in seattle and we were lucky if we made our quota that month of $20,000 I think we only did it one month that year, and it's only gotten worse.
Anyways I digress and apologise for my rant and rave im just so annoyed to see a hobby that I have spent 15 years doing going down the drain instead of growing better. At least some people are still putting on some solid indy GT's.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

That certainly is an important point that only adds more weight as to why the event is staying in Baltimore. Before there were multiple US Games Days GW had no trouble attracting people from all over the country to Baltimore and I'm sure they will again if the show is a good one.

That being said, I'd probably still be in favor of one good GD in Chicago over two weak ones in Baltimore and Chicago. Just do one right, wherever it is.

I also want to add that the events guys are really trying their best with very limited manpower and budgets. So try to go easy on them, folks. Last year's GD Baltimore was disappointing, but there were a lot of factors out of the staff's control. Part of me wants to blame their bean counters, but GW's far from the only company that's cut their marketing and events budgets down to the bone. The unfortunate truth is that we're still in a really sucky economy.

One can be in favor of whatever one wants, but Games Day will be in Baltimore in 2010 and it was extremely good there in years previous to 2009. In the years when Baltimore had the only US Games Day it was a real extravaganza and people spent a lot of money just to get there from all over the place because it was so much fun.

And yes, the staff did the best they could in 2009 with what they were given, which wasn't much. Much credit goes to "GoGo" and John S. and the other staff for managing to squeeze any fun at all out of the 2009 Games Day budget.

I agree, it's a crappy economy and the events staff did what they could. However, GD Baltimore was on a decline years before the economy tanked and that is a result of poor decision-making from the higher-ups in the company.

Like I said, I would love to see a return of the magic that was GD Baltimore. I'll have to wait and see if GW delivers on the promises of next year before I bother to go again, though.

I know I'm not the only one to have been smoked by GWs grand promises in the past and, like Gorgon mentioned, it's a sucky economy and I'm not going to gamble my funds on an untested, "new and improved" GD format on GWs promise alone. Jaded, yes ... I'll let other troops storm into that battle and prove to me it's worth joining.

Hopefully, you won't have to make a decision on whether to, in a vacuum of information. There should be quite a bit of info release far ahead of the GD date, to let people know what will be going on. Preliminary info looks very, very good.

Moving flat out..

After being out of the Hobby 10+ years and attending the GW Games Day in Baltimore this past year.. it left me thinking,

"This is it?!"

I've heard so many good things about Games Days.. and was disappointed when attending the most recent one in Baltimore.

I'll attend wherever it is.. but even better if its in my own backyard.

I think if they show up at GenCon they should only sell Forge World and some Con exclusives. There are other dealers in the Hall where I can get stuff a lot cheaper, so only sell the stuff people don't normally have access to. They'd make a KILLING.
