The 'average dakka-ite' doesn't hold to those things at all. Not for actual gaming.

Discussing what the rules are, and applying those rules at the table are two very different things. If more people stopped and thought about that before getting all high and mighty in YMDC, it would be a much less confrontational place.

I would also dispute the suggestion that ignoring RAI makes you a WAAC gamer. Particularly in pick-up games or tournament games, where you're playing an unfamiliar opponent. Sticking as closely as possible to RAW in those situations is usually (from my experience) the best way to avoid conflicts, as both players are more likely to be playing the same game then when you you start adding in personal interpretations as to what the rules are meant to be on top of what the personal interpretations of what they actually are.

It's only generally in games with familiar opponents where I would start suggesting that we change the rules in favour of how we think they were meant to work, and even then it would only after pre-game discussion.

That was actually my point, Thinkercat; the disconnect between what goes on in the forums and what actually happens on the tables.

My main issue with a lot of YMDC is that there are a few members that spend most of their time shouting down and condescending to other posters while arguing about little more than who is right; members I might add that seem to operate largely beyond the rules of conduct laid out for that board. You can't even admit a change in opinion for fear of more ridicule and insult and "I told you so's".

You are scum.

IntoTheRain wrote:What exactly does 'winning at all costs' mean anyway?

Is your opponent playing within the rules? Is their list legal? If the answer to these questions is yes then saying that they are trying to 'win at all costs' just proves that your trying to sound morally superior to them. And lets face it, the GW community encourages preaching from a soapbox like no other.

As for not playing for the win... Well, I pretty much always try to win and I expect the opponent to do the same but this doesn't mean that I throw good manners to the dumpster.

And then regarding listbuilding: With my main army I'm in a position that I have enough figures to make different kinds of lists and in this way either raise or lower the powerlevel of my army depending what kind of opponent I'm playing against. Kinda nice situation, isn't it? I can make tight army if my opponent wants some tourney practice or make a fun mixed force if we're playing just for laughs.

There is always going to be this problem when two people with very different power-levels in their lists play.

If you're playing someone that's practicing with their tourny army then you need to bring a serious army list. Likewise, if you're playing someone that's just getting started and has a small collection of un-competitive models then you need to tone it down.

It really just comes down to communication.

Agreed. It's all about communication.

WAAC is most commonly used to mean people who engage in antisocial behavior as an inappropriate extension of an excessive fixation on competition. Rudeness, trying to bend or interpret the rules in whatever way is most favorable to themselves, or actively cheating are all behaviors which are generally bad for the community, and the enjoyable competitive experience.

Sometimes players (IMO) misapply the WAAC label to army list building, but I think list building is more properly the province of legitimate personal preference. Unless the person is attempting to cheat on their list.

The Lord said "Thou shall play for Fun!"

But depraved souls, those scum unable to see the purity of Fluff, shouted "WAAC!"

Now children we will talk of the great blasphemer whos WAAC list destroyed Moses' Blood Angels 3rd company. At the end of the battle Moses sayeth "Good Game." The blasphemer laughed and spoke terrible words, "Where is your fluff now? My army murdered 90 of your marines, your 3rd company is ruined, we may have a rematch in 100 years Fluffmonger! Bwhahahahahahaa!"

Children: *Scream*

Fear not children for upon speaking those words the blasphemer burst into flames and was never seen again.

"Take that fluffmonger"

"children:Scream!"

That truly is priceless. I love the absolute sarcasm. I feel it flashing at me from the monitor and dripping from the speakers.

Im guessing Im the only one, but I honestly dont play to win at all. My main goal in a game, is to get some epic hulk smash on something. I think thats why in a parallel world, I am an Ork. I do win sometimes, I also lose. It doesnt really bother me much either way. Now if I had a boyz squad just run over a tank and kill the entire crew inside whene they are running from the burning wreck, that makes me smile. Having the very scarce, choppa wielding boyz shoot down a squad BEFORE CC makes me laugh.
Also on the flip side, having a terminator squad deepstrike behind a large mob and just mow them down in a hail of gun fire makes me get loud. Seeing someone just own my boyz makes me laugh. A well placed pie plate is a thing of beauty to me.

I stay away from tournaments because those guys are there to just win. Period. I dont like that aspect. But thats me. Some people live for tournaments. Thats just the way of it
