Well, Malfred, this was a lot. How many hours did you spend?
In 2009 I started a DA army painting some RW Bikers and I re-did some EC Marines for the GT.

Why would I want the high elf chariots without the lions?

I thought the White Lions Chariots were limited to 1... but that would go to show you how much I actually know about the High Elf Army. Anyways I bet you could do a year without GW but why limit yourself?
Also how are you going to finish your Eldar army and actually play some 40k without GW?

What I'm trying to do is not limit myself to GW
Besides, I'd rather be playing warmachine

If you add the points from the past year or so I've got plenty enough for the game.
The 40k armies that I've started this year and will not finish as a result of buying other stuff include:
*Orks
*(Red) Black Templars
*Eldar
The Fantasy army that I've worked on and will not finish:
Dark Elves
The War of the Ring army that I started on and will not finish:

I have actually started this process. I am in the middle of itemizing my WHFB chaos army and will either make do with what I have or search for a good looking non-GW alternative. Which is damn unfortunate because I wanted some Chosen Chaos Warriors.
Does trading GW stuff you have for other GW stuff count for going without for a year?
The other day I cracked open my copy of AA and recently purchased an expansion to Memior 44.
I have a substantial amount of stuff that just needs painting and I think I will do that. The next models I purchase will be for a new game.
Maybe I will blog this for fun! I have already saved approx $200 this month - which when I went through my bank statements was my average spend.
|
2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games. |

I'm too lazy and I'm tired but what's the ballpark for WM Mk2 rules and minis to be released. I might get serious when enough of the plastic jacks hit shelves.
I'm hoping the starter boxes get repacked with the plastic jacks. Metal is a bitch and with big metal models like that I can't imagine that going very well for me.

Last I checked, the Warmachine Mk2 rules are due in January, with the five Forces of Warmachine books being released one per month, starting with Cygnar. Not sure on the price point at the moment.

Is the goal to avoid buying and painting GW figures? I think that's quite doable, especially if/once you get into historicals and smaller scales. There really is a glut of wonderful choice out there right now to be painted and played for historicals (DBA, FOG) or used for fantasy games (Perry HYW figs as Brettonians, Warlord ECW figs for Empire, Wargames Factory stuff and Perry ACW stuff for VSF, Warmachine proxies, etc.).
Is the goal to avoid playing GW games as well? Probably doable. I haven't played a game of 40k since before my son was born (so around 2006 maybe?) and haven't played WHFB since before 6th ed. and I don't miss it, and suspect that if I play it again it'll be an outdated version (3rd ed., Rogue Trader) or in some kind of skirmish form (Necromunda). I guess the question is: how do you count non supported games like Blood Bowl and Mordheim, as well as lesser supported games like LOTOW, LOTHS etc. (i.e. games they have no figures for)? Again, one is spoiled for choice for these games (Gloire! Gutshot, Rules with No Name, etc.) as well as figures.
Most of the GW stuff I'm working on are either leftovers I've had for years and/or are figures I'm using for other games (AOBR orks for GASLIGHT, for example). And we really are at the point that, unless you want something INCREDIBLY specific, there's a fig or game out there to match whatever you're interested in.
|
Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.
I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil |

The goal is simply to not buy and paint GW figures because I feel like I'm limiting
myself when I do that. There's plenty to paint, however.

You could play WM/Hordes and the decide after a year
if going back to GW makes sense or not.
I guess it will not.

Clarification: I play WM/Hordes pretty much exclusively already. I don't intent to
spend more on the game systems than I already spend. I'm simply shifting what
I spent on GW over to other retailers/producers. I'll still be buying the same
amount of PP minis.

Well, Malfred, your recent question about going " GW-free" for a year got me thinking about it, and after their recent activities and my looking at how little time I get to game these days has made me decide to join in on a year free of Games Workshop.
Recently it's been games of Uncharted Seas, Blood Bowl, and skirmish rules systems like Malifaux that have me interested in gaming. Real life intrudes so much these days that the long battles of typical WHFB and WH40K are unrealistic... but an hour of something else can be done. Heck, I think I'm going to re-read my Rezolution rules and see what I have around for proxies...
I think that for January I'm going to focus on Firestorm Armada ships, then onto more Malifaux crews...

Well, my first month with purchasing anything from GW was a 99% success. I bought a WD for a paint article but no new paints or models. No skaven and no new nids. Not even bothering to finish my minis I have - I think this may even morph into longer than a year.
You know what is funny - cracked open UNO the other day and played it with my wife for a couple of hours. It was fun. We may pick up a few other games.
Think I may go back to just painting and staring at unopened boxes of GW stuff!

In relation to leaving GW for another brand, it works fine. I left for about 15 years, just got back and guess what? Hasn't changed all that much. Some better looking mini's and some armies fight better but thats about it (Some new armies too but they seem rushed in more ways then one). If anything has changed is the quality of peoples work. Some very talented people out there! Golden Demon entry's look way better then "back in the day".
Go and enjoy some other toys. GW will still be here if you come back.

Well, what with Incursion, Secrets of the Third Reich, Firestorm Armada, Malifaux, and countless other emerging games it won't be hard for me to go a year without a GW purchase.
I've got a GW stockpile from 2009 anyway and this is the perfect way to inject a little discipline into my hobby habits i.e. finishing what I have before buying more. I'll buy other stuff but will not buy any more GW until I've got all the GW already purchased built and painted or otherwise disposed of. Considering there's around 40 boxes of various items waiting to be built I could do something different every other week and make it into 2011.

It's cheap and sturdy, but far less detailed and modular.
If you want fast gothic buildings to take up a large area, they are good.
If you want highly detailed smoking ruins, you should pay for the GW stuff.
