I'm considering using 2010 to explore other miniatures lines (other than PP, lol).
My 2009 goal was to paint 520 miniatures in a year, and I finished it quite handily. One
thing that helped was painting scads of GW plastics. Thinking back briefly, I painted
the following things from GW:
*Converted Dark Elf Riders
*Converted Dark Elf Warriors
*Dark Elf Corsairs
*Wood Elf archers
*Wood Elf Glade Riders
*Wood Elf Wild Riders
*Eagle
*High Elf chariots
*High Elf Phoenix Guard
*High Elf Mages
*Black Templar Assault Marines
*Black Templar Novices and Initiates
*Black Templar Dreadnought
*Converted Black Templar Emperor's Champion
*MUMAK!
*Haradrim Warriors (still some unpainted ones on my desk)
*Haradrim Serpent Guard
*Eldar Guardians
*Eldar Dire Avengers
*Eldar Wave Serpent
*Eldar Harlequins (still some unpainted ones on my desk)
*Eldar War Walker
*Ork Grots
*Ork Boyz
*Ork Trukk
Stuff I haven't gotten around to painting: More Dark Elves, Chaplain and servitors, assorted Eldar
Of those models, only certain ones were backlogged (The Wood Elf kits were from 2008
or earlier, I think)
I'm wondering if I can apply discipline and NOT buy regimented GW models in 2010. I
imagine that I can so long as I'm spending money on other things. I figure my PP
purchases will be the money I use to support the local store, however there are models
out there that I'm interested in buying, painting, and modeling up that my shop simply
can't get for me for whatever reason.
*Mantic's Kings of War Elves
*More Soviets for Flames of War
*Eureka's 15mm Japanese Samurai (Field of Glory)
*Reaper's generic fantasy miniatures
*Infinity's skrimish sci-fi models. Probably my favorite sci-fi models of all.
* AT-43 Karmans
*Hunting down old metal Confrontation minis to paint (sad that I finally feel like I can
paint the models skill-wise years after they're in production)
*Battlezone's expensively imported miniatures
*The entire Avatars of War line
*Firestorm Armada spaceships
*More fleets for Uncharted Seas
*Malifaux (the only models I really like are the grungy western style ones)
*Anima Tactics for that anime feel
*Perry Brothers Samurai for 28mm historical
Did I miss anything important?
The issue isn't whether or not I can do this, but rather, am I not-lazy enough to
do this. Some of these miniatures I can get through the nearby store's distributors,
some of these miniatures I'd have to go to a further shop, and some of these
miniatures I'd simply have to bite the bullet and buy them online (I've been trying
to avoid online shopping).
I don't know. But at least I got that off my chest. Maybe later I'll add this line
of thinking to my blog. Any ideas for other miniatures to look at?

If you are into spaceships, I'd recommend Ground Zero Games stuff for Full Thrust. A spaceship is a spaceship is a space ship, and this stuff is very competitively priced. I'm going to be using my Euro fleet from GZG as proxies as I'm not hugely enamoured of Spartan's FA sculpts and I have these already. Plus they're metal.
On the 28mm front have you considered anything relating to Wierd War II? Secrets of the Third Reich is looking increasingly cool and the forthcoming Incursion is looking too good to miss. Space Hulk but with suspender-wearing Nazi chicks, mad scientists and mutant zombies. What's not to love?

Wandering thru the stores of Cmon or Fantization shows dozens of new figure lines. Most of them are high quality, showcase models. Just amazes me how much growth there has been in the industry.

There's also Brigade Models http://www.brigademodels.co.uk/NoFrames/index.html
Their designs are a bit less inspired on the whole, but the US fleet is excellent.

You know what, I think I am in for this. I wonder if I could go for a whole year without spending anything on GW - paint and GS included. The one thing that would be a pain in the rear is if I ran out of black primer.
Should this include the occasion purchase on eBay to flesh out a WHFB Chaos army that is 3/4 purchased.
The simple fact is I have way to many projects on the go and maybe stopping purchasing more and finishing them might be the way to go. Also, I have always enjoyed board games and maybe it is also time to start a WW2 20mm game. I have a friend interested in play a wild west game as well.

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games. |

Use the cheap flat black spray primer from Wal Mart. Just as good and less than half the price.

GW buys greenstuff/kneadatite from Polymeric Systems and resells it, you can just buy it directly from them or off of Ebay or something.
I paint snow camo so I use the white plastic Rustoleum-brand primer from Home Depot, it works fairly though sometimes I have to do two coats over metal minis. It goes on thin though, so it's okay.

I'd recommend any game out there, except Mongoose.
Pulp City, for some really good superheros, and the game takes about ten minutes to play. http://www.pulp-city.com/
Ambush Alley, for some really cool mini rules for modern combat. http://www.ambushalleygames.com/
Chaos in Carpatia, or the other games from Blue Moon. http://www.bluemoonmanufacturing.com/
.45 cal adventures, http://rattrap-productions.com/PulpHeroes/Informants/Informants.html
PP, with Warmachineand Hordes is almost a given.
West Wind with thier neat Wierd War game Secrets of the Third Reich and Incursion http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=126
West wind has a number of pretty cool other games as well, a Gothic Horror game, and a modern day horror skermish game with a bunch of vampire, warewolf, and human biker gangs and a bunch of cops.
Urban Mammoth with Urban War and Metropolis http://www.urbanmammoth.com/
Geezers shut it, 1970s gangster fights in london. http://www.killerbgames.com/onlinestore/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1
The military games, from the Perrys http://www.perry-miniatures.com/index2.html
There is no limit to games out there if you know where to look. Even if you wanted to go back to some old favorites like Starship troopers, Vor the Malstrum, or Warzone.
GW opened the door with thier sucktastic, go ahead and step through.
If they get thier preverbial heads out in time, you have the option of staying or going, but you shouldn't limit yourself and continue getting the shaft if you are not having fun with them. You don't owe them anything if they are inhibiting your gaming.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

I could but with new 'Nids in January that doesn't seem likely. For sure not with plastic gargoyles and plastic Trygon on the way.

I can do this. I've just switched to Reaper paints and I'll be investing in infinity in the new year.
I already have enough GW stuff to complete my IG army (The hydra and manticore turrets came from Old Crow, but the chassis are GW - but my transports and tanks (leman Russ) came from other sources (other manufacturers and scratchbuilds).

If I'm not buying GW stuff because I'm painting my GW stuff, does that count as avoiding GW products? I just ask because I figure if I forced myself to paint all of the GW stuff I've bought before buying anything else made by GW, my next purchases would be Warmachine rulebooks.

The idea (at least for me) is to use the money to check out other product lines. Stuff you've
bought from GW already isn't money you could spend on new stuff, so painting your
previously purchased doesn't really count against you in this experiment.
Not that I'm encouraging anyone else to take part in this experiment. I posted this here
to get more ideas of other product lines to get my interest.
I have a feeling I will break down at some point. I'm leaving half finished armies behind, such
as my Dark Elves, Black Templars and the Eldar force I was planning. The only way to
scratch that itch is to buy new product that I will feel compelled or interested enough to
paint. Old product, if it keeps me from buying new product, is just as good at holding
that interest.
Good thing rotating Privateer Press armies keeps me going. I'd be at a loss without a
go-to game or company in this regard.

I am going to do this. My gaming fix will come from all my models I already have and need to build and paint or from my existing army. I will make do!!
I have bought an expansion to my Memoir44 game today instead of going to GW. I have a couple of games of A&A planned and am really thinking about cracking open some board games again. Maybe able to get my wife involved in those. A bottle of wine and hey presto strip A&A anyone :-D
For painting, I am opening up a couple of Reaper blisters I have, finishing some chaos WHFB models and am looking at getting Car Wars and building a few cars to go with it for fun.
This morning I went to a model shop and bought a 1/72 scale tank just for fits and giggles and spent 2+ hrs wondering around there. I haven't done that in years. I saw so many things that look like fun to do and actually look interesting to do. I think I may be spending more time there.
I don't plan on breaking it. Will update later on progress - maybe do it as a mini blog in the modelling section. My only caveat to this is GW black primer. I don't care what anyone says - I still believe theirs is the best.

You got the big ones that interest me right now. I could easily see myself picking up minimalist forces for Infinity, Malifaux, and Anima Tactics as non- GW games, similar to how I have minimalist Cryx, Panzerkompanie, and Southern Milicia forces. The problem for me is starting something and watching it balloon out of control like other things I've bought into... *cough* GW *cough* ____ As far as a 2010 GW embargo goes for me personally, I've already planned to complete my CSM army: - Terminators in Land Raider (Q1) As my "future-proofed" CSM were on deck for 2010, I'm just not likely to not buy these models. Plus there's ongoing rules maintenance: - Blood Angels (Q2) - WFB 8 (Q3) - Black Templars (Q4) I would plan to buy BA for the rules behind my SM, BT for the Fluff behind my CSM, and WFB8 just to keep up if/when I restart Fantasy. Depending on how things go, maybe I'll delay some (or all) of these purchases. Though it would be nice to be able to tear down my SM and rebuild everything to spec, along with a brand new CSM army.

The rumor on BoLS is that a "fleet-based" Chapter will be done Q4, and BT are the only Chapter for which this makes sense. I think if GW officially confirmed SM MEQ BT for Q4, certain heads would explode in nerdrage, so that's why they're being coy with the "fleet-based" codespeak. But Q4 '10 is a long time from now, so who knows. I was mostly looking at my "worst case" personal spend situation. ____ malfred wrote:What is this "out of control" thing you speak of? You know how you buy $20 to $30 worth of stuff, because it looks cool, right? And then, a few months later, you look around and, holy crap, you've spent $200 to $300, And then a couple years pass, and then, wow, crap, it's like $2k or $3k, and you're wondering how the hell that happened... That's what I'm talking about. There oughta be a damn law about not making minis out of pure crack cocaine!

Dark Angels are also fleet based mind you, seeing as the Rock can go anywhere they want. Or it could just be a bits release for the Imperial Fists, in which case they'll repaint their Crimson Fists pack again.
Back on topic, my own expenses are very impulsive and on a to need (every once in a while I need to build something) basis more or less. As of right now my GW cravings are gone, with the last models I've wanted for a long time coming in around Christmas. It all depends on what kind of goodies GW plans to release next year. I've heard rumblings of a plastic Thunderbolt, which is too good to pass up on, especially when the local FLGS gives a good discount. And FW is bringing out more Elysian stuff, which I am a sucker for.

Right you are there, though the BT's were more of a test tube to see how to best produce sprues for other big marine armies. The BT vehicle upgrade sprue in particular is the glaring fault of this line of reasoning.
