You might lose your job, but that would be your fault for failing to account for the potential consequences of violating an established social convention. You'd also probably have a pretty good case for wrongful termination in the event that your employer fired you on the basis of that 'transgression' alone. I say 'transgression' because African-American carries its own stigma, and many people prefer the term 'black'. I really doubt anyone would be so offended by your usage of one or the other as to fire you, or contemplate a lawsuit.

You would never be successfully sued for libel, as it is not defamatory to call someone black. I mean think about this for a second, if referring to someone with a racial epithet is grounds for libel, then where are all the lawsuits on those grounds?

Fateweaver wrote:
I mean it is now considered a hate crime if you punch a gay man in the mouth. Never mind the fact he might have called your sister a whore. If you punch him it is a hate crime as now ANY crime against a gay man or woman, even if not done out of hate, is a hate crime.

Disregarding the issue of hate crimes, and disproportionate punishment:

In punching a gay man in the mouth, you would already have committed assault. The fact that he called your sister a whore is not an extenuating circumstance. You would be found guilty of committing a hate crime only if it could be proven that you had assaulted the man on the basis of his sexual orientation alone. This would most likely be established through witness testimony. The very same way your defense attorney would establish that the actual cause was his reference to your sister as a whore.

I do find it really amusing that you're very willing to vilify a theoretical person for violating a social convention, while ignoring that same standard when considering a potential reaction to your own poor behavior in a professional environment.

Yeah, that did sound kinda funny. "It's a crime to punch a gay man in the mouth!" It's a crime to punch anyone in the mouth.

Well, in the 90's it was illegal to rap about women as ho's and sex and getting stoned while or before having sex so apparently that was a clear infringement and led to the world becoming more and more PC. It was illegal once in this country to write songs or rap about the same things 2 Live Crew rapped about so what's to say it won't happen again?

Even Eminem has been attacked by Tipper Gore and Dick Cheney and their comments his music should be banned. Again, he isn't politically correct and so people want to prohibit him from doing what he loves.

Give the government a reason to enforce their will and they will. Allowing certain groups to have a say in what we can say as Americans invites the government to step in and try to interfere.

It is the same way with the 2nd Amendment. Lobbyists push for more gun laws under false notions and skewing of stats to try to open the doors for the government to back them up.

so you started hating osama on this thread and now its moved to hating the republicans. The US sytem of two party politics is flawed, pressure groups (usually small in number but loud and annoying) and deep pocketed lobbyist have to much power, for the most part it is usually strongly conserative republican groups that fight to damage the 1st amendmant so they can live in their idea of the US.

oh and on another note indian = someone from or desended from someone from India, the country

calling someone from a race or nation that uses a particular term to refer to themselves is the term you use, it would be like everyone you meet calling you a Canadian or Mexician, or if you're protestant and everyone calls you catholic

I am increasingly convinced that Fateweaver is just someone else playing a character - or that he's taking the piss and doesn't ACTUALLY believe the things he says he does .

He seems to think that it's unfair that he can't say the 'N-' word aloud - but DOES think that it would acceptable to break someone's jaw for throwing a snowball at his car!
That's comedy gold right there. I think he's a brilliantly observed caricature.

Yes, because, eventually, the GOP will hold that 55-45 majority, and the shoe will be on the other foot. These things go in cycles, and to remove the filibuster notion entirely would defeat the entire purpose of having the Senate as a deliberate brake on things to prevent (or minimize) the tyranny of the majority.

In the mean time, God bless the Republicans for pulling the brake and grinding things to an absolute halt. If the Dems won't compromise to get 60 votes, feth 'em.

If this continues, should the senate look long and hard at redrawing their procedural rule to require 60 votes to end discussion?

You mean like when Bush was the President and dissent (aka obstructionist politics) was deemed "patriotic"?

I don't know what America you were living in back then, but disagreeing with the president was quite clearly labeled as 'unpatriotic' by quite a few different talking heads.

Americans were really taken advantage of when 9/11 happened. Both by the terrorists and by our own Administration.

Seriously cane, i was watching a video on youtube of Coulter on Fox and Friends saying that the USA should "ride some tanks right on up there and CRUSH Canada!" and this other columnist was saying that alot of people think (due to an increase in comments as absurd as that) that Coulter is just a brilliant satirist and is going to turn around in 12 months time and say "See? They ARE crazy!"

Of course im pretty sure thats bollocks and she is just a crazy right wing nutbar. But hey, it would be kinda cool.

I like how in quoting me the quoters left out the word "hate" in my comment about punching a gay man in the mouth.

No gak you idiots, I do know it's a crime to punch anyone in the mouth but I mentioned it's a "hate" crime and you know what? Good luck defending yourself and trying to prove it wasn't a hate crime. If you punch a gay man or a black man in the mouth you can't prove it was ONLY for a transgression against you. The man/woman you punched only has to SAY you punched them based on their skin color or sexual orientation and unless you get a psychic friends network person in the courtroom to read your mind you can't DISPROVE that you didn't punch a gay man in the mouth for being gay.

So next time you feel like quoting me please improve your reading comprehension skills first or use the quote function. Misquoting me only makes you look like an ass Sid. At least Kanluwen took the time to read what I had posted before typing on the keyboard like an untrained ape.

Alba, give me your address and the make/model/color and plate number of the car you drive so that if I'm ever foolish enough to visit the UK I can throw snowballs at your vehicle since you wouldn't do anything but sit there and watch me as apparently it's okay to throw snowballs at someones car.

Hating on the O administration is not unpatriotic because liberals have never stood for what this country stands for and was founded on so you didn't need Geedubya in your heart to be a Patriot. You just can't be liberal or have voted for a liberal president if you want to call yourself a Patriot.

See what I did there? I can make this personal too.

--The whole concept of government granted and government regulated 'permits' and the accompanying government mandate for government approved firearms 'training' prior to being blessed by government with the privilege to carry arms in a government approved and regulated manner, flies directly in the face of the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.
