Not really.
Compare older sprues, like the Basilisks, to more modern ones (Space Wolves). See the amount of wasted space on the old ones? Their new
CAD programs make the sprues themselves a lot more efficient. You could probably fit 150% to 200% more bitz on the Space Marine Command Sprue now than you could back when it was designed. And besides, an Earthshaker wouldn't be one sprue, there would be a 'artillery sprue' that contains components for a large gun, and each of the various guns (Medusa, Colossus, Griffon, Basilisk) would use the same parts (like how the Shadowsword kit has 6 different guns, and of them 5 of them are made from combining the same 3-5 bits in different ways). That's how the new Basilisk
should be. What we got was a lazy piece of gak thrown in a box with a price increase.
You, good sir, have a nose for business! Didn't know that about the Shadowsword cannons - that's great Lego mentality right there. But how many parts (except the mount) can you really switch around between an Earthshaker (long and thin), a Colossus (fat and stubby) and a Griffon (tiny)?
There's only one way to find out...
Even so, I feel the basilisks price hike is due to the potential lack of sales, something that would be compensated by options for other guns, I mean, a simple sprue of different options would suffice. It could start off as a griffon mortar, which, if you add on a thicker piece becomes a medusa, where if you add on a longer, thinner piece, becomes a basilisk. surely that would work?
