He was a tactical geCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!!!!
Rowboat Girlieman is famous for using his tactical genius to lead a Chapter that is good at avoiding the vast majority of major events/campaigns. The only exceptions being that one time when Hive Fleet Behemoth NOM NOM NOM'd their homeworld, and that other time when Captain Uriel Ventris made the brilliant move of CHARGAN FORWARD IN THA NAME OF THA EMPRAH into a Necron tomb, thus waking up the Nightbringer.
Clearly the Ultramarines are the GREATEST SPEHSS MURHEENS EVAR WHO UNLEASH C'TAN AND DOESNT AFRAID OF ANYTHING
Well, if you read the Nid dex, it actually makes it sound like the Ultramarines suffered a bit, whereas in the marine dex it's all "we lost 100 dudes ah well we killed a zillion nids is all k"
I especially liked the part where Girliemans book that Calgar was reading from when he was giving orders for the tactical deployment and whatnot was rendered useless by a big bug that had never fought marines before and who is immortal. Tis be are the swarmbuglorddudekickasspwnerswordwhackeyguydudethingnidbugdakkait.
It seems that in 40k, ultramarines only ever win if someone explodes; Behemoth was defeated cause of mega-boom of a big spaceship, that time with the Dread. I mean come on if it was that easy there'd be an armylist entry saying 'exploding dread, pts cost: how many pts you have. Turn 1 it explodes and all the enemies die - you win!"
Back to the BA... there's some pretty bad stuff in there from what I've heard, I think a lot of it is probably 'exagerated' and whatnot.
etc etc, I'll leave you now as the bandwagon will be here to kill us BA-bashers.

O.k. no where does it say they WON because of the dread blowing up, just that he got one of those im-taking-you-down-with-me moments, they still had to evacuate the planet.... and if you read in to the fluff on the nid-Macragge battle it says they lost quite a few people, but in a less bad way, i mean why would a codex say"we got our buts kicked and ran away"? if the books all about them then its going to sound like they are the winners.

I think, Max, this should be moved to a new thread. I'll go make that now [i.e. whenever I can be bothered]. Unless, although I doubt that there is already, an Ultramarines thread out there.

I just love the title of this thread.
I only bought the BA Codex because they were the army that got me into 40k and it was an interest thing. I stopped reading halfway through in dismay that people are paid to produce such poor quality work.

I actually really enjoyed the 'Dante one-shotted an avatar!' bit, because it's made pretty clear that it's not true but plenty of people in the Imperium believe it anyway. It's a cheeky nod to the old 'ZOMG CALGAR SUCKER PUNCHED AN AVATAR' outrage and it's nice to see that Ward, for all his faults, has a sense of humour.

haha, i like that comment Corrode. i must say i agree that if you don't take it seriously it is really silly and funny.
ultramarines don't make sense to me, they are just basic marines and don't seem to have much of interest to them save that they stand as the standard and everything else is a deviant.
