You know sersi as usual I have to give it toyou as this is freaking SWEET!!

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Perhaps its just the pose, but I think it needs some work.

My thought on the lance is, well Grey Knights have pole axes and are somehow still effective. That, and the lance can also serve as a type of banner. Besides, nothing tops impaling some Xeno scum and mounting upright as a warning for all see.

Technically, Grey Knights use halberds, and in close combat they are actually effective fighting weapons (ancient China is where you look for those). Lances on the other hand are really one shot weapons (obviously Britain, France, Spain, etc..). Spears are good but they have a tendency to get caught in people and break, and they aren't very Templar friendly I don't think.

Anyway... I vote one of the guys should have a big pair of brass knuckles.

Good work, keep it up.

More technically, they are glaives, which were (along with their 10^4 variants) tremendously popular in Europe and Russia. Halberds are more ax like, and calling the Chinese pole weapons "halberds" is a really weak translation, like calling women from the Yangzhe province "Valley Girls"
Glaives are really awkward one handed, though at least the current GK rules and models sort of imply they use both hands. A lance would be even worse, though a spear would be quite reasonable. One handed spears were used with shields from right around the same time as man invented shields, and are plenty durable. It is only when they get out past 6 or 7 feet that they get a bit awkward and breakable.

I am really digging the biggerized boys, though I do wonder if you are going to add some details, especially to the chest area. Even my wife noticed that they look a little dull, though of course fancy painting could remedy that as well as resin

Yes, indeed I actually have several small stamps that I've made to apply putty details to them. I'll be adding a some modeling chain to wrap around their weapons etc. That said what would you suggest detail wise?

They're still 28mm heroic scale, around 2-3mm taller that standard terminators.

I stand slightly corrected. But thanks a bunch for the insight into ancient weaponry. I still say that spears are not templarish..

oh and electrified chains on fists would work ok... but I was thinking brass knuckles modeled onto a powerfist. that would look cool in my brain without any real life thing to back it up with.

Actually, those stamps on the chest would be about perfect. I kind of figured that was what you had in mind but wasn't certain.
One thing I might suggest though is a little more detail around the face/jaw parts of the visor, sort of like the older style dogfaced bascinettes and great helms:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_helm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bascinet
The bascinet has more of a "beaky" look, but something similar with grill work/holes in the helms might add a little visual interest. Functionally pointless, technically, but visually interesting

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also, are you planning to eschew the use of tabards and cloaks, or do you plan to add them later? Not that the lads necessarily need them, just that it might add some interesting movement to the models, and maybe help cover some of the more awkward leg joins and so save you some putty work.

Okay, I see what you mean now, regarding the helmets. They'll be getting more details:

1. rivets
2. drilled in vent holes
3. carved in grill slots.
4. probably some hoses as well.

I'll also be using some standard marine heads, and bear heads with chain mail coifs.

Nice, they all resemble GK terminators, I'd definatly would like to see more different heads.

I like this stuff, having done a huge horde of Blue Space Marine Templars years ago, this almost makes me want to do it again, if I wasn't doing so much fantasy stuff.

Your chainmail needs a bit of work though. You need a ball stylus, like my 99 cent one from Michaels (#4 in the pic)

Then make sure you go back and forth alternating your angles in each row either vertically or horizontally.

With your skills, you'll be out doing me in about 5 minutes.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Grey Knight Luke wrote:

I have to disagree with you. The Black Templars are based on the templars that crusaded in the holy land, such as those under Richard the Lion Heart) and they would have used lances. Plus archers at that time would often use a shortened wooden lance to defend themselves in combat once they had run out of arrows or their enemies had closed the distance. so Lances are fine with templars, and they would be used as pennants, displaying each Knight's (or here each squad's) heraldry.

I like this though keep going.

Thanks allot! I'll give the stylus a try, I have several that I use for hand and faces. It never occurred to me to use them for chain-mail.

A Couple of Ideas:

I was looking through my bits and two useful bits from the Grave Guard box came to mind.

1. that great weapons fixed to a styrene rod makes a great plastic Halberd for Grey Knights or in my case Black Templars.
2. all those un-used shoulder pads make great knee and elbow pads, or to just add an additional layer of armor plate, the have nice details to: spikes and skull mostly.
