What about technicians? I'm an Avionics Systems Technician in the Canadian Forces. It's not an engineer per say, but we do do a lot of tinkering, and are very mathematically and scientifically oriented.

electrical engineer by schooling but program cnc's and write gui's for machines that make airplanes. I understand the socially inept part engineers get, we get a lot of those here at work. I am a bit more outgoing and deal with the customers well from bigwigs to the operators. It makes my job easier if i can get the customer to believe me and trust me and not question some of the crap I toss out there.

so yes lots of techincal people are socially flawed but not all. I don't think socially inept people last in 40k because much of the joy of the game is the interaction with other people. if it wasn't for that. I would not play the game.

Agreed, but I might paint the models still, just less of them.
