Again, my opinion being if you have the delivery to get the melta into range, take the melta. If you don't, the plasma's a better choice as you can shoot it from farther away. Of course, if you move you can still only fire 12".... AND you can't assault after firing it.

Which is why you take plasma pistols?

I want to slap people that are affraid to use a plasma weapon. I played CSM for about 5 or 6 years, and I think I only lost 1 or 2 champions for the gets hot rule. Considering Ive fired the things a bazillion times, only loosing a couple is totally worth it

Would you put plasma guns in the hands of champions if you needed them to summon a Greater Daemon?

And 1,000th post fer me!

lol.

"I am now going to summon the great TWENTY-HORNED DAEMON OF IXTHAPAC! Lemme just squeeze off a couple of shots with my plasma pistol first."

and yeah, I think worrying about burns is silly. If you're on the guard end of the spectrum, yeah, you have to deal with burns, but on the other hand the plasma is so cheap and it's so easy to double up on that losing one here and there makes little difference to the strategy as a whole. On the marine side, I have never personally seen a power armored model die to a plasma burn, and most of my chances were back when plasma burned twice as often. I don't doubt that it happens, but I can't imagine being particularly worried about it myself.

I'd only worry about the gets hot rolls if there was a lot invested in the (1W) model.

Ex: I'd give a CSM champion a plasma pistol, but not if he also had a powerfist (so I'd always go for just the fist).
I'd give a 3W guard company commander a PP, but not a 1W platoon commander, because I've paid for some orders and don't want to lose them.

Agreed above poster, but I am comparing plasma to melta not plasma to flamer. In this match up I have to go flamer over plasma. Also when using a plasma cannon against an HQ most times I play the HQ has a retinue or joins another unit making the plasma cannon a good choice.

I'm a fan of both to honest as most people seem to have mentioned they are good at different jobs,

however I probably deserve that slap because i'm scared of using them on my infantry. If I was marines it might not be a problem but I had a CCS with 3 plasma guns and was spending an additional 50 points trying to keep them alive from their own weapons, I still lost 3 veterans in two games to their own weapons, including the additional points spent on the plasma to start with by taking a melta CCS instead I made a saving.

I still take two plasma sentintels though, plasma on vehicles rules.

Anpu that list looks like it has major flaws:

The assault squad will benefit from Shryke but the rest of the army is not geared up to be fleet.

You have no vehicles at all. There is nothing in the list apart from the captain and one fist that can take on armour 14 and the fist is unreliable at doing that.

You have a very weak assault element. In short I would love to face that list.

As far as the Anti-Armor element, the current meta has a hand full of 1 Ork Battlewagon, Dreads, Rhinos/Razorbacks and Three Land Raiders and own all but The Ork Battlewagon, 3 of the dreads and one Rhino/Razorback.
If I start seeing more armor I will invest in more Anti-Armor
As far as the Fleet thing...I just like Shrike.

Then I'll post a D weapon. Because they're so awesome, they must be plasma related in some way!

Note: Melta gets very cool in apocalypse. You will see signs like: "caution: too late!"

Now, back to 40k level weapons..

If you give me the choice between a PP and a bolt pistol (or even a laspistol..Emperor forbid) then I think the choice is a bit obvious.

I only take Plasmacannon, otherwise always melta, because Plasmacannons only ever roll one dice for gets hot, i.e not rapid firing, and they can hit more targets.

And if they are not
Personally I find the Rock/Paper/Scissors on the Rate of fire vs. Blast to be a situational and hard to argue with. I have hit One and I have hit Five with a blast. You put Four Blast Templates on a target you are going to hit something and with Plasma something it going to Die.

I like plasma guns, but tend to have bad luck with them. That being said, I still occasionally use plasma pistols for sarges or assault marines, and plasma cannons in my tac squads. I have shied away from standard plasma guns because I cook more marines than I kill bad guys with them, and from combi-plas, which I was using to kill my precious, expensive sternguards.

...Now, THAT being said, if you are using imperial guard, definitely take them. Your guys are all going to die anyway, and they cost next to nothing, so they might as well go out with a bang.

Really, take whatever works for your army, and for you.

If you are fighting Light Armored Vehicles or Foot MEQs, PC is the way to go, you can get them at 36".
Vs Armor, you want Multi-Meltas and you have to get with in 24".

With my DIY Marines I use Plasma SPAM, 26-29+ Plasma Weapons.
11 Plasma Cannons
3-6 Plasma Guns
12 Plasma Pistols

With My Space Puppies I have a bunch of Melta Weapons, but mostly rely on Thunder Hammers and Power Fist.

thats it....i think im making that model.....
