To each his own, I guess. I've never really gotten into playing battles with friends or over the internet. The draw for me was always completing the Pokedex and the like. What I was trying to get at is that when I pick up a recent edition of Pokemon, I feel overwhelmed with not only the sheer number of monsters in the game, but also with the crazy amount of content and options that are out there (side quests, contests, pagents, etc).

ok ok im hearing all of this good and dare i say expert experience, but what actually makes a good JRPG. The FF series id have to say was a hit for its story line and customisation of characters, and not to mention it i spitched at all ages. But what do you want in a JRPG, good weapons, nice story line, descent graphics or half naked fantasy animation characters that leave you mesmerized at the look of those tiny tight tights around their skiny little asses making you aroused just thinking about it?

What would you ultimate JRPG be?

It's not really different than other game. You want solid gameplay, memorable characters and if they can manage it a decent story. Good sound track doesn't hurt either. JRPGs aren't special, they're just games.

I will say however for me, this is most certainly not part of it. More than anything else, this is what bothers me in games. Not just RPGs but games in general are pretty terrible with this. Female characters designs just have a tendency of being pretty damn horrible. Japan is probably a worse offender than America in general but both sides of the pacific are pretty damn bad. Dang it, if there is a Knight in a game I'm playing I want her to look like a knight, not what some low-rent Halloween costume store would market as a "Knaughty Knight".

If it looks like a woman it is a man.
If it looks like a little girl it is a woman.

Hmm. I haven't played too many JRPGs, but I don't think the trap concentration is that high. Good rule of thumb for some genres though.

Especially since he pointed out that "every" one was modeled after the characters from a game he liked. Exept that not every character is modeled that way since in the most recent ff game Sazh and Snow don't have a spike on em. Hope was a whiner. Kept him out of my party cause I didn't like him.

Except this isn't true. For all the subjective statements you can make about liking one thing, the claim you're making is just plainly false. If as you claim every single character in a JRPG Post-FF7 has been a Cloud or Sephiroth clone there shouldn't be even a single example of a character that doesn't look like Cloud or Sephiroth.

The problem is, it's pretty easy for me to think of multiple counter examples off the top of my head.

All of the above are characters from post-FF7 JRPGs. They include main characters and supporting ones. There are some characters from good games and at least one from a horrible game. Say what you whatever you feel like about liking/disliking their respective character designs but none of them qualify as Cloud or Sephiroth clones.

I like JRPGs and I certainly don't have any problem with people who don't. The genre certainly has it's fair share of faults. However, making sweeping, obviously false statements is just plain silly.

See, now you're the one making a claim about me and what I like. Though you're doing so with terms like "Chubby" and "butt hurt", so I'm not even sure why I'm even responding to them. At any rate, I'm not an overly huge fan of Final Fantasy. For me, the series peaked with Tactics. 9 was decent, and I liked 12 enough to finish it. It's far from my favorite JRPG series, hell it's not even my favorite Square-Enix series.

JRPG is a misnomer anyway for what passes as a JRPG these days. FF13 wasn't a role playing game in any fashion, it was an interactive movie with some terrible battle sequencing thrown in.

Even my favorite FF, which was 6(3), was not really an RPG at all. You don't ever play a role, or affect the outcome of the game; in any FF games. Its an adventure game with stats and items, a dungeon-crawler without the dungeon but with a story instead, that you follow just as if you were following a path through a dungeon.

But that's a bit off topic. I think most JRPGs are terrible, and the masterpiece that FF13 was supposed to be was not impressive in the least to me. They need to bury that franchise and come up with something new. But I guess as long as people keep buying it, it will keep coming back.

Interesting thread. My 2 cents...

Final Fantasy specifically has a fan base not unlike Warhammer's, or Star Trek, or Harry Potter. If you have fans to sell, then sell more of the same. Likewise, if your company is good at making chocolate, you sell more chocolate and not electric cars (Just to be creative and different). If you judge a franchise by the strength of it's fanbase...then based on the number of people buzzing around the Square Enix booth at E3, you're going to have to wait a long time before the Final Fantasy cash cow dies off.

I'd like to add that Japanese role playing games have evolved in different directions and should not be defined as a "genre" by Final Fantasy. Games like Bayonetta, for example, conceptually seeded American games like Red Dead Redemption (A claim I throw out there with no way to defend). Japanese role playing games are moving well down the plotted, character development and customization, path that American games are following while avoiding the FPS syndrome that define most American games these days.

Only point of that comment is you can't use JRPG and FF interchangeably. That's like using Star Trek to mean sci fi, or Warhammer to mean wargames. (That wasn't much of a point, but it is a point)

perhaps you are referring to Jiru, or Luneth? Which, up until FFVII, were widely regarded as sprites.....

FFVII was the game the started the craze, at least in America, and it also started the square girly hero boy craze as well. After FFVII came out, a lot of the older characters were re drawn and were brought back into popularity....I cant remember correctly but I think a few of the older games were remade....

all of this, of course, happened after FFVII......


yeah I do get defensive, call it a character flaw....seems to be pretty contagious on this forum.

The only good FF was FFI, there, I said it. (this is due to 8-bit Theatre being awesome)

FF VII didn't "start the craze". It had the honor of being, in essence, baby's first RPG when gaming went mainstream. Final Fantasy was quite popular before that but it was a time when gaming was gaining more mainstream acceptance growing. We just moved beyond 2D into the early steps of 3D. Nostalgia is a powerful thing. It isn't an awful game by any stretch but in the context of the franchise it is fairly 'meh'.

oh I am not defending the game....I love it, some hate it, that is fine.

I am referring to the shift in game art, fan art, and character perception that began with Final Fantasy 7. Yoshitaka Amano had been the lead character designer for all of the other FF games up until VII. Tetsuya Nomura replaced him in 1995 for the development of FFVII, he also continued as character designer for every Kingdom Hearts game, and every following FF game....some games he even took the role of director. His style of character has been the norm for the FF games for 15 years now....

...all I am trying to say is that since FFVII, some of the hero and villain characters bare a striking resemblance to Nomura's first characters from FFVII.

I find they look more similar to FF8 than 7. With 7 he had to use a somewhat more generic style than his own.

8 was also had teen heroes. In 7, every character bar one was over 20.

Yet modern FF games I find resble 8 than 7, which boggle the mind.

Wierd, I don't remember anyone in FF10, 12, or 13 who look especially like Cloud or Sephiroth.

On the other hand, I remember an awful lot of unnecessary belts and zippers on a lot of characters. Hell, Lulu had a dress made out of belts.
