This is the most amazing old school army I have ever seen (apart from the sad fact of the missing arms) I get very nostalgic for times past when i see them - I collect old school mini's myself. I made a foolish mistake when i was 19 - I thought I will never want to play with all these old models again so i gave them to some kids... (wish i knew where they live these days - I'd go ask for em back).

Please keep painting the army - there are ways of replacing the arms I'm sure, and i for one want to see them resurrected.

Appy-polly-loggies. I had something of a pain in the gulliver so had to sleep. I was not awakened when I gave orders for wakening.

weekyskemian44: Thanks Mate!!

miss dee: Ok, might have to run the army as Chaos then if use my Beastmen...running it as a modern Chaos army was my original plan anyway - as it would enable me to field a Daemon Prince (Primarch)...

I have been doing a bit of research into the models that I have. I had not really considered the skill of the sculpting really when I was younger...I think they were created by some warp entity in a basement. It looks like most of the ones I really like were made by Bob Olley

I wrote that the other day, but for some reason it didn't submit and was on my computer when I arrived earlier.

Bizare.

Anyway. I bit a metallic cylindrical projectile last night and went and splurged. Wandered over, through the various malls that cover the distance, from my place to the game shop and dropped my wage on the table and picked up some paints (actually I picked up the Foundation Paint set) and quite bizarrely some Kislev horse archers...which I was certain were no longer produced (and they aren't). I got the archers because I saw the 'Horse Archer with Sword' and thought that would be an awesome Captain for my IG Roughriders...my next thought being: oh yeah...where are those bad boys...

I recall picking up about 15 at a car boot sale in the mid 90s. I lost the horses though....damn turpentine!

You may be wondering what I did next? Well the game shop had no brushes and as I had just spent a lot there (the horse archers were overpriced, but, as I was 99% sure they were no longer produced I paid for them...) I went and got 5 different brush types (I didn't know what to buy) a brush cleaning pot thing (brushes were expensive too so I am going to look after them) and a small sponge (to paint vehicles).

Then I went home and switched on the A/C (I was treating myself - had just completed the successful solving of a major headache at work with no one getting shouted at!) cracked on some 80s Madness (the band) and sat down.

The last time I painted a model was about 2001 when the plastic Catachan kit came out (which I bought after the loss of my marines as I thought I would have to start again, but instead I decsended into a world of rugby, gym, and fantasy roleplay). My painting skills were limited, but I think in hindsight this was down to me a. using paints that were ancient and oily b. not having a guide c. not spending any time at all on them (i painted in minutes and it showed) and basically just not really knowing what to do...

Which is one of the reasons this site is extremely helpful. I've been doing a lot of reading on here and picking up tips and tutorials, and reading. I think the key is time and patience. I also happened to have been lucky enough to have been given a recent WD (Space Hulk launch one) which had a really good tutorial in it.

So anyway originally my plan was to paint the dreadnoughts first because they are big, and provide a easier target (for my paint- I was dubious about my skillz). But I had difficulty getting the paint on...I think it was way to watery. With the knowledge that I have gleaned...I believe I did my first ever 'washing' last night. But on the dreads I got board quckly - it taking ages to build up any colour and being to fearful of a. wasting expensive paint and b. having to strip yet another model.

So I dug out two models that I had undercoated (Emperor's Champion and a Commissar - I have occasionally bought new models if I like them) and set to work....would really welcome any feedback on the below....tips..suggestions...this is my first model (I gave up on the space marine for similar reasons to the dreads: Terracotta is the colour - is there something I should know about applying it?) that I have painted in almost a decade, first using citadel paints, and a paint brush which which was functioning.

Oh: I want to base them on snow - how now brown cow?

Anyway - as Tony Bliar said: things can only get better!

A similar but much less catestrophic thing happened to me when i striped my warp spiders in Citrasolv. I dumped them out in to the sink and was like "whats this black gooey stuff and where are my bases?".

I just started but its cool to see the old guys and your painting looks nice.

So I hereby start my countdown:

So for the commissar I am going for Terracotta and Battle Grey. I am having difficulty getting a nice terracotta colour? Is there a reason for that?

For the average IG I think it will be battle grey with tads of Terracotta.

Space marines are a bit different...though I want there to be a link as they fight side by side.

So here is the 90% completed Emperor's Champ - or Sword of Sigmar as I shall call him.

For both the commissar and the Emp.Champ. I just need to afix back pack/arm...and finish the base...and they are done...not amazing but as the first models in a decade I am very very happy.

I started on one of the dreads...actually I started pouring on the paint and it wasn't working so I just focused on one section. The leg.

Then I started building up layers for the icon.

It is a holiday on monday. I am going to undercoat a squad of marines today, and a squad of IG.

Really hoping that I can finish them by monday evening...so I can show you something interesting...

So those of you that read this might be wondering what happened to my ooper troopers..

Welll here is the ones that I am currently working on. I have to say that the black undercoat really brings out the sculpts of the minis...and they look substantially better and show far more detail in the black.

I am going back to the constant layering on these ones....as I want each one to look characterful and none to be the same.

One thing that is annoying me though is the 'complete' foundation paint set I bought is far from complete...no black, white, gold, gore, snotling green....

Sigh. Might pick some up tomorrow...it is a holiday.

Anyway...it is peeing it down, have no ride and left my wallet at home about a 1k away.

Oops...

Any tips and advice would be really welcome...

I don't really know what I am doing...I am just really mixing the paint a little with water and putting loads of layers on.

Oh....I got some Cellulose thinner yesterday (think that was Miss Dee who suggested) so going to stip some models tomorrow as need to get outside today it...

So I was painting till 3am last night...as I was the night before. To be fair I started about 9pm, and it is a holiday today. I've done a few hours today as well...

Anyway, as I was leaving my flat I realised Terracotta and Fenris Grey (which I was testing on a Space Marine) is far too similar to the Crimson Fists...so I will stick with a Battle Grey washed with bleached bone and then muddied with charldon (or something like that) granite.

I had a go at free handing a comet on the SM and on Ox's ribbon. I need to go over it a few more time to make it stand out...but these guys are pretty much done. Just need to work out how to do the bases.

Oh...and whilst I really like the look of the older models...I have to say the quality of the casting is substantially higher on the newer models. When you look closely at the SMs/IGs there are large parts which are filed with metal but not actually on the model if you know what I mean.

Again really sorry about the quality of the pics...will try and get a proper camera soon...

So still looking for tips on painting and basing: especially snow basing...

Paints I need to get: Gore Red, Gold/Bronze and Black...

Some pics:

Hey guys!

First of all I am super chuffed to have 4 comments! Thanks guys! The fact you read the fluff means a lot to me as I have been daydreaming at this project for a long long time!

So last night whilst watching movies I had seen many times before I finished all my minis pretty much. Still need to do basing, and for the space marines arms (I will have to find a source of arms first- suggestions?) and I am going to do some frees hand detailing of the twin tailed comet...

@Miss Dee! Yes I figurd that last night when I noticed the background was perfectly clear! Hopefully if you ZOOM IN everything should now be clear(er). Great minds think alike! Actually...they don't! But you know what I mean....

@Weekyskemian (hope I spelled it right this time!) I know that showed last night...it took me ages to paint the old troops up to a decent standard but only a few hours to get all 9 space marines done...the newer models are much much easier to paint! Saying that I like the old ones to much I don't think I could put a knife to them....

@Sageheart Thanks for pasting mate! Yes...I want to pick up some Empire Miniatures ASAP...but Warhammer isn't played so much here...I have an idea for my termies..and...this army is 10,000 years old but also brand new...meaning they have a lot of legendary equipment. I have my mind on a few things...but whether I can achieve them...that is a different matter....my gaming budget is pretty limited....saying that...if you have any suggestions for what to try I am open! The more people interested in this the better!

@ Miss Dee: Dakka Dakka

Some photos...hopefully if you zoom in they will look clearer.

I am painting with charcoal at the moment...so want to keep up the production levels...will try and finish a dread tonight and give him some extreme twin tailed comet detailing

So...ideas welcome on what to do, how to do, and where to go?

Hilow Sigmarites,

Well, I didn't do any painting last night. I got home at 9pm from work (started at 615am yesterday!) so couldn't really concentrate.

I did do a little green stuff: patched up a four ogryns with some shoulder armour to hide the joins. Gave a 2nd Ed. Ratling a cloak (because none of the 5 produced in that era have one) and gave a Zoat some armour. I have one Zoat and about 3 Slann. I would like a couple more to be honest. Either to run it in Mordeheim, or Warhammer or 40K (check this out...I love this: http://lostinthewarp.com/wordpress/2007/09/21/servant-of-the-old-ones/ ) . I have Heroquest x 2 (my parents bought me the same game 2 years running) and Heroquest Advanced so I have a fair few of the plastic Firmir. This is going off topic. Anyway, I won't be able to do anything on the Firmir till after Christmas. My parents in the UK are very understanding but not totally clued up on my collecting needs. When I've been asking my mum to look for a model for me...the conversation goes something like:

'Mum, can you do me a favour?'
'Sure Love'
'Can you look in the Shoebox under my bed called 40k?'
'Again?'
'Yes'
A few moments later...
'Is there a Ogryn head in there?'
'There are lots of bits of metal.'
'It would be a small bit of metal...but er...shaped like a head.'
'Does it have a beard?'
'No. It might have a metal plate.'
'Ok got it.'
Moving back to the video cam...
'Is this it?'
'No...that is a dwarf.'

Anyway. That conversation actually happened pretty much word for word.

Still...my parents are extremely supportive...and still see my hobby as intrinsically good...

So...over on a different page I started here I was inquiring about missing legions/destroyed legions etc...

LIW: Fire Hawks, Relictors, Star Scorpions = 3/13
Gene Seed: Flame Falcons, Wolf Brothers, Fire Hawks = 3/9
Destroyed: Emperors Scythes, Astral Knights, Emperors Swords (Necrons), Emperors Swords (Alpha), Warhawks, Venerators, Silver Stars, Shadow Wolves, Mortificators, Black Consuls, Knights of Eternity, ?Novamarines, ?Crimson Castelleans, Marines Errant = 14/21
Unknown: Brazen Skulls, Soul Drinkers, Rainbow Warriors 3/16

The reason that I was after this is because....I figure that the Primarch Sigmar and his Legion would have by now encountered a few Chapters and a Legion, fully equipped (unaffected by the Horus Heresy) would literally make mince meat of a chapter...so what if fluff wise, those chapters that are missing, lost in the warp, went renegade or destroyed (unless given a specific reason) actually encountered the Sons of Sigmar?

And...what if...when they were encountered some of them actually saw Sigmar in the flesh (how would a IG react to seeing a living Primarch?) and were struck by psychic visions of the Emperor (I am coming up with a Special rule...see below) and 'converted' to the Sigmarite Cause....most would be destroyed but some Marines may have turned against their own and fought for Sigmar when granted visions of the Emperor...

So....somehow I would like to include remnants of these chapters in the army...even if it means buying more models...(I want to make sure I can field 12,500pts of Sigmar)

What do you think? Is that too much? Overkill? Cool fluff or not?

Btw...the Special Psychic Rule/Ability that I am thinking of for Sigmar and any Psychic in the army is the ability to grant visions of the Emperor, and either turn a Imperial Unit against itself or against its former Chapter.... (i.e. 1-3 unit breaks down into conflict killing all, 4-6 the unit switches sides and fights as normal). Wouldn't apply to a unit attached to a Chaplain...or Commissar...

For the Sigmarites...I don't know how to play the Chaplains...and Commissars fluff wise...suggestions please! Thinking of them being political agitators...but what does that mean game wise?

I am leaving Manila tomorrow for the Province again. Will be back Sunday...however, I've got a 7s tournament coming up towards the end of the month...and lets just say...beer is 30pence here...so I have a bit of work to do before I am multi-game ready.

@ Crimsonic Haha...ok I see now! I just had the benefit of a weekend job and friends pawning theirs, and their elder brothers, collections for enough money for a crate of beer. :-)

Try and do the same...:-)

In the year 40K I really don't think camo is useful....afterall...you need a hole space cruiser just to have changes for different environs.

Besides...I like to like my men up Warhammer/1st WW stylie and march them forward. They look pretty when all dressed in nice colours.

you can prob buy empire stuff online for pretty cheap (ebay) or maybe look up the bitzbarn or the warstore, they are websites that sell parts rather than sets, and if you have the money you can buy bags of random parts, warstore has it as just a big bag of parts, bitzbarn has a bag for different games (a 40k one, a fanasty one, a SM one, etc.). so maybe getting one of those would grant you a ton of parts to use. i think if you get the chance you need some of the fanasty creatures in your army, there is no way i can see sigmar not bringing some pets along

Hi Guys, I am back for a wee bit, but sadly will be out of town again by thursday. I did some painting late last week on a SM model that is new-ish but I am not sure from whence it came, or name!

I am pretty exhausted, I started driving at 8 am yesterday, and got home at 11pm. With a very brief break for coca-cola (no nice coffee in the province) so I am not sure I have the energy to attempt anything tonight...

@ Miss Dee - that is very very helpful, thanks!

@ Sageheart - actually pretty much the same as Miss Dee, I am checking them out now. What sort of creatures? I was thinking of Wolves...or the Sabretusks, I think they are Ogrekingdom?

Incidentally, I am looking for some Temple Dogs for my ninja's and some War Pigs for my halflings....

Ok...thanks for the contributions guys!

@ Miss Dee: Cool ok! I'll knock up some Sigmar stats asap...let me know what you think!

@ Sageheart: I like the ideas of Griffons...and they seem cheap on ebay...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Warhammer-Empire-Griffon-/270631220556?pt=UK_Toys_Wargames_RL&hash=item3f02e0b54c

How would I use them?

I have a lot of Ogryns...I am trying to GS armour on them to make them more fantasy...

Dragons would also be awesome...one presumes that would be a very heavy flamer...

Would I use WFB rules for these?

So thanks to @Miss Dee for pointing out some greatly dicussed Primarch Stats over on another site Bolter and Chainsword (I should probably thank Brother Guilmero for starting that blog).

I've taken them and altered them a bit, but with in reason (will explain changes).

Sigmar Heldenhammer:

Ws8 Bs4 S6 T5 W5 I6 A5 Ld10 Sv2+ Inv4+

Wargear: Master Crafted Artificer Armour or Loin Cloth (no armour protection +3 to movement, +1 I, +1 A), Ghal-Maraz (Master Forged Squat Thunder Hammer), Vortex Grenades, Frag and Krak Grenades, Twin Pistol Flamers, Bolt Pistol,

Special Rules:

Relentless;
Sigmar and his Sons are relentless in their pursuit for the Emperor's Freedom enemies, thus in games of variable length the Sigmarites
force an extra turn sequence to be played. Only applies if facing Imperial forces (this includes Chaos SM and Renegades).

Ready for Action;
The Sigmarites have spent 10,000 years (but only 3 for them) adrift in the warp. They are fresh, eager and ready for action as such they always go first.

Strike Mighty Blow;
Sigmar Fights with a double handed Thunderhammer of legendary power; Ghal-Maraz (The Skull Splitter). One attack per turn can be a Strike Mighty Blow adding +1 to that attack strength.

Vision of the Emperor;
All Imperial forces (Chaos SM and IG included) within 18" of Sigmar must make a moral check if they have line of sight as he is obviously a Primarch, but one as yet unknown.

Death to the Believer;
Sigmar and any psychic in his army (for Sigmarities this includes Chaplains and Commissar's) can channel the Emperor from the Golden Thrown and throw psychic visions of him against any Imperial squad (includes Chaos SM/IG but HQ, Commissars and Chaplains are immune). The Emperor can then enter the head of the enemy and offer them a chance to join the cause for his freedom. This Psychic power has a line of site up to 12". On a role of 1-3 the vision fails and can have no further effect on that unit/squad on a 4-5 the unit splinters and fights amongst itself (roll a D6 per model to determine who falls on which side 1-3 'Imperial', 4-6 Sigmar). On a roll of 6 the unit/squad is converted and fights as normal for Sigmar and the Emperor.

So what do you think?

Explanations:

WS/BS : I gave Sigmar a high WS and a low BS. I figured that he is effectively a barbarian and therefore has little experience using guns, prefering instead to use his hammer. He still has BS 4 because, afterall he is a Primarch.

Loincloth: Er....again the barbarian thing. Obviously no armour bonus, but it frees you up for a bit of the old Ultra Violence.

Vortex Grenades: Sigh. A thing of the past in the Warhammer40k world (its not a psychic power)...but wait....my army is pre-Heresy, meaning I can have some cool old stuff....welcome back Vortex grenade...will use old rules.

Pistol Flamers: One built into each arm (can only be taken if using Armour)...again this twin tailed marlaky...twin tails of flame! Muhahaha

So it looks like I have some serious compitish for the WFB crossover from Blackhand (check out his awesome Skaven 40k). I think he may have already inspired some to take up his cause. A second front is open with Weety who has some amazing (and well painted) ooper troopers so check that out also...his blog is the Neverending....

Anyway. I took some pics and did about 1hr of painting last night. I have hit the wall when it has come to painting partly from my already exhausting workload increasing by 150% (no joke - just got lumped with 3 more projects!) and partly because well...actually everything stems from the over work. I might get some serious painting tonight, but I am not going to be able to play a game with my Sigmarites till at least November...same with Rugby unfortunately...both are on the back burner.

Saying that, here are some pics of what I am slowly working on. The dread is taking ages, but I think I am doing some decent work. The IG I am attempting to conceal the felt tip - it might have to be stripped however. The - I am not sure what model that is - SM has just had some highlights, same for techmarine.

Before I paint them I need to work out the mix of colours I was using before. Should have made a note.

After that we have what I want to paint next.

Anyway...thanks for reading if you are!

Any comments on the Primarch stats?

i would make your own rules for dragons and griffins or use them as count as for heros or units, maybe a dragon could count as a squad with heavy flamers? im not sure exactly, maybe use demon codex for these creatures and in large games use your marines and the count as army.

@ Sageheart - Good idea. I could use Dragons/Griffons as daemons when playing as Chaos (realistically most times I will be playing as chaos) and then as heroes perhaps when the opponent is ok with me playing 'properly' as Sigmar. I could use the dragons and landspeeders then, but with a flamer (is that a option-will need to check) and perhaps baby dragons (I can still get these from GW) as heavy flamers in squads. Otherwise baby dragons could be count as flamers of Tzeentich when playing as Chaos.

Update: so yesterday I did some undercoating. A few marines, a few IG and some beastmen. Here are the beastmen. I am currently just blocking in the colours. Then I will wash away!

I have about thirty of these in total...though everyone that is not shown here is the 3rd variant (with a mace).

I will probably lighten the guys with chainswords, darken the Gaxts and keep the others (still in the UK) that sort of brown. I've never painted beastmen before...so tips are welcome.

How can i do a cheap and good looking snow base?

Red eyes?

@ Sageheart - I figure why put of the inevitable. Sooner or later all fantasy leads to dragons.
