I got into Games workshop (and essentially 40k) when I was about 7/8 year old, everyone at my school was playing the old combat cards game, I had the Orcs and Goblins pack and then the Space one, cant remember what that was called. After that I got into Rogue trader, Chainsaw warrior and Blood Bowl, but 40K was always my number 1. I think for me the height of my playing was during the 90's and playing second edition, for me that was/is the best 40k has ever been, the rules were flawed and easy to power game but it was truly epic and my fondest memories of battles are around then.

The galaxy is the Emperor's, and anyone or anything who challenges that claim is an enemy who must be destroyed

My son started playing this summer and at first I had no interest. That was until I went to the local GW store and saw some Tau stuff on the shelf. I loved Robotech growing up and thought building and painting some Tau FW & CS would be fun.

After building and painting a Tau BF I decided to play a game with my son.

...It was the end of me...

Three armies and plenty of $ later I'm addicted.

Ol' Blighty

well, when I was eight I was walking around in a library (kid's section) and, while trying to find my grandma (who took me there weekly), stumbled across some WD mags. I picked it up, saw all the LOTR guys (my favorite films) and then borrowed it. I then spent the week reading it and oogling the LOTR guys, until my mum went and took me to GWS to buy the LOTR starter box. The manager patiently explained to me that, since I was only eight (3 days before my ninth b-day), I could not play this, and it was for bigun's. I went and borrowed each white dwarf (they arrived in the library about a month after they come out) and did so until I was 10, by which time the library would stop getting them. for my 10th christmas my grandma and grandad asked me what I wanted. I remembered WD and got a tub of flock, 20 uruk-hai and 24 gondorians. A year later I got bored and moved onto SM. this happened on a spur-of-the-moment thing- while looking around a hobbycraft store in search of some stuff to make a mother's day present, I noticed a small 40k shelf. And then I bought my first captain. I knew nothing about the rules, and so gave him a combi-melta (it was the biggest gun) and a chainsword (because it looked cool). He underwent a lot of wargear changes, and right now, he has a power sword, jump pack, storm shield and grenade launcher. I have been addicted ever since.

Funny story really...

When I was in high school, I used to make fun of the kids who played warhammer. I thought it was stupid, especially when you could be playing Halo, or Civilization, or...you get the idea. Plus painting!? So despite my nerdiness, I had ruled it out as being 'too nerdy'.

Fast forward to last year, my third year in university. Having been a member of the wargames club for three years, I never really did anything besides play Risk or Civilization. Then we got a new president who showed us all space ship table top games (Full Thrust in particular), but using BFG models, Star Trek and BSG ships as well. So I bought a FW Tau fleet to get in on the action. Then I took a liking to the aesthetics of the models...and...well...now I own half a dozen chimeras and seven Leman Russes, with 100+ guardsmen. Now I play BFG, Firestorm Armada, 40k, getting into fantasy, Full Thrust, and a number of historical/modern wargaming.

I still make fun of people who play 40k...but only SPEHSS MEHREEN players .

I started playing the old Final Liberation game from SSI, did that a few times and thought it was neat.

A few years later, I broke out Dawn of War and played that a fair bit.

A few more years later, I'd moved from Owen Sound to Barrie for work. I went over to my buddy's house and we got to talking. Then we beat got a couple of Eldar units out and had a brawl. After that, we chatted about the factions a bit. About a week later, I was visiting Sault Ste. Marie and found a bunch of old Ork stuff on sale. That was in 2007 and the rest is history.

I've built plastic car and tank models since I was like 10 years old. Play a lot of RPG's (not the kind you have to plug in). I was GMing a Rifts campaign when I came into my local gaming store and found a starter paint set that came with some really generic plastic marines (the ones in the 2nd ed starter set) and I thought power armored marines were a dead ringer for Coalition Dead Boy troopers, bought some to use for the roleplaying game.
A friend sees the models later and tels me he plays that game, I should get the box and he'd teach me...
A Blood Angel starter army eventually led to Chaos Marines, then to Imperial Guard, and then to Eldar

Base cause: my grandfather.

He used to cast and Paint 15mm scale Star wars models out of lead(Any of you old enough might remember the old white metal figs and Plastic Playsets from 1982 Kenner's micro collection). He also used to make some WWII geman and Allied figures in a slightly smaller scale than 80's G.I.Joes.

Between him teaching me to paint the figures and Playing Old school D&D/AD&D, along with GWs Heroquest, i began Painting my heroquest models and experimenting with washes and highlights, then converting D&D monsters for use with my heroquest games, and getting Ral partha AD&D figures to paint. My cousin had found a FLGS that was in a local mall and sold GW products, informing me that I could get loads of orcs and goblins for my games from there on the cheap($15 for a box of 20 orcs or 30 Goblins). Then in 98 or 99 I bought a boxed set for 3rd edition(after seeing the second edition 40k boxes in a home-town hobby store for years right next to the heroquest expansions I had been buying); So I bought the Boxed set, had 10 marines, a Land Speeder, and what would become the BT Marshal LE model and 20 DE warriors, but no-one really to play with. I then moved to alaska for a year, purchased more and more marine items and by the time i got back had enough pieces to get a few friends to start playing with me, they both started Chaos armies, I had imperial marines and then started on tau as soon as they came out; then moved on to IG, while my one friend had moved on to Eldar then started an Imperial marine force when 4th came out.

Around a year after 4th came out(and shortly after the 4th Edition Chaos dex) both my Chaos Playing friends Rage-quit, as did I. The first out was Tim, the guy who only ever played Chaos(and had some of the most beautifully disgusting Plague marines i have ever seen; he went to SFX school in PA); followed by both me and my friend Patrick(we bought into Warmachine at this point). When Warmachine went into it's 2nd edition he rage-quit that(He played Cryx) and I was left with no-one to play it, and at the same time we both got back into 5th edition.

I currently play Loyalist SMs(I kept a small force, so re-building them was simply a matter of buying a few models to fill points), Space Wolves(re-starting from the ground up, but loving the new models anyways; I probably would replace my old ones with the new), I.G.(Again re-building, and kicking myself for getting rid of my old models), and I play with my Wife's Orks(I got her playing about a year ago, she wanted Orks, so I got her 2000 points worth and a Stompa)

Patrick plays loyalist marines, Blood Angels, Eldar, Orks, and still has most of his old Chaos stuff. He is lucky in that he kept nearly all of his old 40k stuff and only really had to buy Orks, a few Eldar things, and Most of the new BA stuff.

My brother saw me one day playing a strategy game on my xbox one day.He told me that I would like a game that him and his friends played. So a few days later he borught up a set of his black templars model. He had me and two of my cousins to try the game.I was hooked but my cousins werent (my cousin likes to build them with me but not play.)After that day I looked up which army I wanted to play.I found the two armies I would love to play but sadly both of them were outdated,Dark Angels and Dark Eldar. My brother though gave me a 40 unpainted marines and terminators for my birthday and I used them as regular space mairnes since the Dark Angels havent been updated.A year later and a sold half of assualt of black reach I have marines and Dark eldars. Now Im waitng for christmas for the dark eldar codex.

It all started with the Dawn of War games. I'd never heard of W40K before then. I found the the different factions and the whole setting to be awesome. That led me to start reading up on W40K on wikipedia. I found I really enjoyed the background and eventually read the first few Horus Heresy novels. At that point I decided it would be fun to put together some models, and so I am now in the process of putting together my first army. The more I discover, the more I love it!

I played Star Wars Miniatures a few years back, but eventually got bored of the game because the rules annoyed me. It just seemed too easy to hurt enemies in the game, there was no difference between close and ranged combat ( ranged guys continued using the same ranged attacks when fighting a close combat guy), all normal weapon ranges were unlimited, and the game was played on flat maps. I had heard of and scene Warhammer 40k things before, first in a local hobby shop when I was like 7 years old and then in a GW store in Bath, England that had very impressive tables. I decided to get involved in Warhammer 40k when Star Wars Miniatures were not being played anymore by people near me, and quickly bought AoBR. I immediately enjoyed assembling the models and playing the game, and decided to pick a faction. I was originally between IG, SM, and Tau and I made a chart of all the pros and cons of each, and decided on IG. I found out that there was a independent retailer nearby and went there on one of the game nights after I had gotten my codex and battleforce. The people there were very nice, and gave me tips on painting and army building and played a introductory 2 vs. 2 game with me.
I have enjoyed the game ever since, and plan to be playing it for years to come.

Good question.

40k is insidious; it snuck up on me. I got the Horus Heresy boardgame because it looked awesome (it is), and then a few weeks later I find myself casually browsing some 40k websites, and wondering what 40k is all about. I dug out my old Warmachine models, looked at Malifaux, then made my decision, bought the SM codex, and sold my small Cygnar force.

I think it's a combination of the fiction & flavor of the universe, the massive scale of the army, and the more intense hobby community and play community around 40k. I know I can go almost anywhere and get a 40k game (even if I haven't actually, y'know, played the game yet).

I first became really aware of the 40 universe while I was going to school at the Naval Academy. There was a GW Hobby Center in the Annapolis Mall that I used to love going to on the weekends to look at. And then DOW came out; I nearly started playing then, but I finally decided against it because of a lack of time, space and money.

A couple of years later (2006), a friend of mine in the Navy's nuclear training school convinced me to go in with him on a Battlefleet Gothic box set. I was hooked on the hobby at that point! However, I only started 40k in 2008 when I finally realized there was a severe shortage of BFG players. If you want to walk into the average game store and find a pick-up game, BFG isn't the game for you, unfortunately .

I've been aware of 40K for quite a while, but didn't really know anything abut it other than there were Space Marines, and Evil (Chaos) Space Marines, and this Wave of Giant Insect Destruction (Nids). I go that info from just reading the back jackets on a couple of novels years ago. I didn't really think anything about it one way or another.

Then not to long ago I was reading an article about Starcraft II (prior to the launch), and it mentioned that Starcraft was heavily inspired by 40k. That go me interested, so I started checking 40k out, and ran into Dakka. All the amazing models and conversion inspired me, and after spending a couple months debating which army to play I bought AOBR and started converting the SM. I've been hooked ever since.

My AOBR got lost when my family helped me moved a couple of months ago , but I starting over, saving up to start Nid Army.

In 1992 my cousin bought Space Hulk and painted it so poorly the models burned an image into my brain that I can't forget. But what trumps that is how much fun we had playing the game. He was Genestealers and I played the marines. My first game I only won by 1 marine surviving the onslaught and I was hooked.

Got married and life happened and I forgot about it. Then Rites of War came out and I bought it, not realizing you could buy the models separately. The game was great and I'm still trying to find a way to play it today.

Then in January 2005 I bought a new computer and got Dawn of War. That next day, I got online and bought about 2000 points of SM. The rest is history.

Started my gaming career with Advanced Heroquest around 1994, and then 2nd edition 40k. I was big into reading White Dwarf (started just as the magazine went to the fatter, thicker version) and the constant 40k battle reports made the game look awesome. I slowly bought a bunch of 3D terrain and a small Chaos and Eldar army. Never really played the game heavily, and eventually drifted to better things.

Got back into the current edition because some of my friends were playing it, and I still had my old figures and terrain so the barrier to entry was really low. Still a horrible ruleset and totally not my kind of game, but rolling buckets of dice is better than no dice at all.
