Simple as that.

I loved the way the models look and the whole idea of a galaxy constantly at war got me into it. And once I started winning a couple games, I knew I'd be playing for a long, long time.

I've had intrest in wargames long since before I started 40K. I saw WHFB as a young teen, and desperatly wanted to play. Ironically, it was a friend that showed me 40K while we were in London for a school trip. He helped me get into the hobby originally. I started playing again after a break because I love the way the models look and the game flows.

I played Dawn of War for the PC. One of the best RTS' ever made by far, and it did a good job presenting the lore of 40k to a audience that included people who had probably never heard of it. You don't really see many scifi settings that quite match that of 40k. A nice break from the endless stream of Star Wars and Star Trek clones.

I've always wanted to play DoW but my friends told me it didnt stay true to 40k. It didnt deter me, as he is very critical of everything. Do you think it stays true to 40k?

I remember stumbling into a GW a very long time ago, must've been 11-14 years old. I remember being in a rush to get somewhere, and I almost feel like this particular GW was in an airport or train station or something, unlikely as that may seem. I had some pocket money on me at the time, and I picked up a blister containing a single man with a very large gun, which upon reflection must have been Gunnery Sergeant Harker, his older model. I never did so much as glue him to his base, but I kept him in a desk drawer. I'd take him out and look at him every once and a while, and I'd feel like I was missing out on something big, though I couldn't place my finger on it.

Years went by, and I forgot about old Harker in his desk drawer, but I did stumble across the Forge World site, as I was linked to it on an airsoft forum, which I was once an avid player of. I fell in love with the Elysians, and would check the site semi-often to see if there were any updates to the line. After I got out of the Army, I had some money left over, and I decided I'd do something I'd always wanted, start WH40K. Up to this point, getting into it would have been way too expensive, especially since all my spare money was being spent on airsoft guns before this. I got my first few squads, built them, rezlized how expensive an all FW army would be, shelved them, bought some Catachans, failed at them, bought some Space Marines, failed some more, bought some Space Wolves, finally figured out what I was doing just a little, and here I am now.

It's all a girl's fault, at least for me.

So, there was this hot chick, I totally wanted to hang out with. Her brothers were friends of mine (and, unbeknownst to me, were trying to hook us up), and had just picked up 40K after years of modeling airplanes, tanks, etc.

So, in an effort to spend more time at their house, I picked up a box of Eldar Guardians. It all began there.

I eventually married the girl, and even though she doesn't play, she understands my obsession, and blames her brothers more than me for it.

I got sick of playing battletech and Star Fleet Battles at the time. Needed a new game that was along similar sci-fi lines and 40k fit the bill.

Originally a teacher in middle school hosted a gaming club after school. It was right around the time they released the 2nd LoTR game. So we played a lot of LoTR. After middle school though I kind of dropped out from the gaming community until after I graduated. Once I discover a GW store at a local mall though I got back into LoTR again, but that store closed down, so it was back to not gaming. It wasn't until about 6 months later my friend Darkdm was looking for some friends to play 40K with him and I figured I would give it a shot and started a guard army. We've been going to the FLGS for almost a year now, and have no plans to stop war gaming anytime soon. We stick mostly to 40K and just started Fantasy, but it would be nice to get into LoTR or WoTR if I could find anyone to play with.

one day my mom had picked up a book for me from a local brders and left it on my bed.the book was "The Guns of Tanith" by Dan Abnett. I've since collected over 65 of the BL books, and because of them have recently taken up playing the game also.

Hmm I dont think I really remeber. I do remeber when I was younger building model tanks with my brother and that was always fun so I have generally always liked models. I think I just walked into a store one day saw some people playing and thought. Yeah I am most def getting into that.

Can't you see we have been abandoned? Forget matters of duty and honor to the emperor this is now a matter of pride.

My father suggested we stop into this store called "The Games Workshop" to see what kind of video games they sold on my 13th birthday. When we got in there we were quickly surprised to find it wasn't THAT kind of games store.

Needless to say I fell in love with the hobby immediately and collected Fantasy Orcs for a time until eventually I was able to snag a consistent job. I then started to play 40k because I felt like modern warfare translated to the table better than the more static fantasy.

For me it was an evolution, of sorts.

I used to play the classic Traveller RPG with a good friend. Typically this involved loads of maps and such, but we found that representing the characters with figures and building the environments of the adventures helped better visualise the setting (sort of a proto-spacehulk). This approach soon attracted a couple of other friends into the game

When Rogue Trader was released it represented a sort of "upscaling" from a character to an army for me

A Year or so back, I caught the big Games Workshop Sign atop GW Glasgow, and thought, 'a Game? Interesting...', and walked inside. I then walked around for a few minutes, looking at all the Box Art, and spent a few more looking at the Display Cabinet. I then left, and didn't give it a second thought, as I didn't think it would be something that I would, A: Be good at, B: Be interested in, C: Ever play. How wrong I was. Well, for B: and C:, anyway!

I then picked up the Dawn of War Series, and in my own time, I learned about all the different Units. At this point, I didn't have the Shop or the Tabletop Game in mind. Then, one time when I was playing Soulstorm, I remembered the Miniatures, and thought it'd be cool to investigate, and maybe pick up a few.

And now I'm hooked.

Your friends may mean that it doesn't stay true to the rules. It absolutely nails the feel of the game and universe down. You can get the first Dawn of War game for under 10 bucks on Steam right now; I suggest you look into it.

I grew up with wargames - my dad took me to my first Historicon when I was 6 or 7. However, I always preferred sci-fi over historical or fantasy gaming. When I was 12 or 13 I had a homebrew set of rules for sci-fi combat, and I used mostly Kryomek and Old Glory/Copplestone minis. One year when we were at Historicon (I must have been 14 at the time) I found the 3rd edition 40k starter set for 20 bucks. I liked the look of the Space Marines on the box and I figured I could use them and the Dark Eldar guys inside for my game. I pretty much devoured the artwork and fluff in the rulebook after building the minis, and I bought the first Dawn of War game. Not long after, one of my buddies said we should try actually playing 40k, and so we did.

Played Epic back in it's heyday in the 90's. Went to a friend's house last December and we played Space Hulk. That rekindled the urge to roll dice in anger, so I decided to play 40K, since no one around here (at the time) played epic...

The original DOW game did it for me. A buddy of mine had it and I played it at his house when I was 15. Bought it myself and really liked how the Space Marines looked and played and how the 40k universe felt. Almost 4 years later and at the end of my freshman year in college I bought DOW2 and it made me think about getting into the hobby. The same friend who got me into the PC game told me he had got the AoBR box. I decided to give it a try and went on ebay and bought 2 AobR tac squads, Aobr captain, AoBR dreadnought, and a rhino for about $35. About to start my junior year in engineering and now I have over a company of Space Marines!

I guess electrical engineers really do put the "EE" in gEEk!

I had already played Warhammer for a few years, then saw the adverts for RT in Dragon Magazine. Then saw it being played at a mini-con at West Point. Ran out the next day and picked up the book and a box of marines.

Dawn of War. That and I found out Brian Clevinger played Tau, and I was a regular reader of 8-Bit Theater at the time. I was looking at most of the races, including Orks, Tyranids and even Dark Eldar, but I really liked the Tau models because they were the most sci-fi looking I guess, one of the few races that didn't have an obvious "Fantasy Army in Space" theme.

I wish I had never gotten into 40k, though. The game is okay and the background is awesome, but the other players really ruin it for me. Whether they're super competitive or fluff bunnies, they're all donkey-caves.

Dawn of War as well, however by that time I'd been playing fantasy for a long time, since 95ish had a solid dwarf and Dogs of War forces. Sold both of those to fund my Tau, and now I wish I would of kept the dwarves, but got some solid High Elves now.

Rogue Trader at a gaming club event, then a Dragon Magazine articles about Rogue Trader, and then the Realm of Chaos hard cover expansions, maybe not in that exact order. I think the big push was the Dragon magazine article likening the Imperium to the Empire in Star Wars.

That's like back when Dragon Magazine was in print, and published articles about things not published by T.S.R., and back when White Dwarf published articles about things not made by Games Workshop. Where's the "I feel old" Orkmoticon?
