=D I got all the Dark Eldar from my friends start set in 1998 or so I continued with them. Back then I was pretty "elves are cool" quite the oppisit today, developing into "dwarfs are cool, elves are kinda cool, elf women are wonderfull, elf men.... ew, nooneunderstandthatdwarffemaleswithoutbeardissuperho" hurpdurp.
Dark Eldar are up on about 3k points, stop adding to it around 2005. From Dark Eldar it went to Eldar, then Tau. Sold Tau, bought Nids.

Hmm well I love strategy and History WW1-WW2. I all ready had a WH ork army which I could hardly use due to the fact people at my club only had 40K.
So I bought 1 of the most unique and expensive IG armies. The Elysian Drop Troops because I like the style of fighting and thier fluff.

It makes me feel old to see everyone first hearing about 40k from DoW.
With that said - I've always loved games and miniatures. Me and a buddy got into 40k for a little bit when I was 12-13. I loved the models but stopped playing because I always lost. Looking back now, I lost because my buddy was bringing 100s of points more than me and combing codices with no FOC consideration.
I finally started playing again last year with brotherSRM who generously caught me up on the rules. Now I can't get enough!

My buddies played 40k and I played a few games with their stuff.
Then I started buying my templars. I picked them out of the book "How to paint space marines" because they looked cool. I have enjoyed playing them.

I have always been a huge fan of sci-fi and any RTS games. Of course I loved Starcraft. Then someone showed me a GW catalogue at school and I was hooked, simple as that. I joined at the 3rd/4th ed transition.

So, I already had a background in 40k-ness from having painted model airplaines and battletech minis on the one hand, and having played battletech on the other.
What really got me into playing 40k was Magic the Gathering, actually. I played a lot with my friends, but the problem I had was that I was always stuck buying booster packs, while my friends all hand-picked their strategies by buying individual cards at a time, because their parents were much richer than mine.
Over time, I couldn't win a single game because of the money disparity. The fact that the game was based off of income made me sick enough to quit.
It was around this time that I heard about this game that used a points system. Not only was it balanced, but you always played at the points level of the person who had the least stuff, regardless of how much other stuff your friends had gotten their parents to buy for them. It wasn't long until I bought my first 40k unit - an eldar vyper.
10 years later, a 3-year gap and a switch over to guard and here I am.

Friend in college was complaining about not having anyone to play. He has two armies so I got to play with his models for a while. A few months later, after i graduated, I started my Blood Angels.
As for why? I could careless about the story. The rules were not bad, and I liked the models.

I remember it clearly.
3 of my closets friends and i have always been into fantasy.
beginning with RA salvatore which eventually and inevitably led to some D&D. which was alright but still lacking for me.
Anywho, My friends older brother aka "the know it all lore master" left an old white dwarf lying around. I picked it up took it home and read it cover to cover.
hooked. instantly.
shortly after i went and picked up one of those noob SM painting sets with the crappy single molded space marines and like five paints.
I was 16 then.
several on again off again years (and many armies later ie dark angels, chaos SM undivided, several attempts at IG and even a dwarf army) later im now 25 and i cant kick the habit. its just too damn cool.
then i found dakka dakka.
and now dorkness is complete.
sorry for the late post. its nice reading other peoples journey.

Pokemon.
Seriously. Played pokemon (gameboy), picked up pokemon cards. Met dude who also plays pokemon cards. Tells me about Pokemon card game legue at a "game store." Go to game store and behold! Warhammer 40k Army battles! I wanted to play the "big boy game" but, alas, too expensive.
Fast Forward like 10 years. After being reminded of Warhammer thanks to DoW (Supprise! >_> ) I realize I have enough money saved up to start playing Warhammer! (And the crowd goes wild).
All thanks to Pokemon.

I think it was issue 166 of white dwarf. i bought it from a newsagent for something to read and fell in love with it thanks to the battle report (it was SM vs Orks, jervis vs andy chambers i think).
I must have read that battle report a dozen times.
A couple of years later a friend at uni was into 40k. I bought a pre owned chaos army off milsims and lost my first battle. But it was exciting and fun, and a CSM with a missile launcher killed a jetbike in CC. So i was hooked.

While in High School a few of my friends played DOw and talked about it frequently, mentioned the table top but always said it was rather expensive.
A friend and I went to college, he continued to play DOW and let me install one of the games so I could play aswell.
Frequently he would mention that he wished that he had the cash to play WH40k tabletop but continued to point out the prices.
His birthday was coming up and I had a brilliant idea. GET HIM SOME MINIS!!
I got onilne and found a GW near us and went there after getting some cash, talked to the guys that worked there(who where in general, awesome!) and they explained the basics and gave me a demo of what went on during a turn(at this time, even after being shown, I still didn't understand it.
I got two things, one of the small boxes of quick IG's as a bit of a gag and AOBR.
The day before his birthday i went to where I hid the two items and tossed the box of IG at him. He nearly killed me. I looked to my other roomie and asked him one thing."should I give him his other gift now or tomorrow?"
He responded with something that turned out to be true. "Well, judging by his reaction he will either kill you with excitement, or raep you cause he likes it so much."
Being curious of what reaction I would get I brought out AOBR and gave it to him. Thankfully I wasn't killed or the other, but he wouldn't stop hugging me for nearly twenty minutes.
So, we started to play, screwed up assault horribly.
The next day we went to the same GW and I got my official army(mostly to piss him off due to his army of choice:SM)
Sorry for the wall-o-text

Strangely, the game Fire Warrior. Not even me playing it either.
A friend had been given the game and though not blown away by the sheer awesomeness of it, he liked the universe it presented and upon discovering what that was, went out and bought some Space Marines. Needing someone to play against I said "Sure why not?" and grabbed the Tyranid codex.
I then proceeded to spend the next seven years laying down thousands of pounds on small plastic gribblies and soldiers and getting riled up over the fickle nature of the dice gods. Damn you Fire Warrior!

'twas the summer of '98 if I recall correctly a friend of mine showed me a picture of an Eldar fire dragon which at the time I thought was pretty nifty as far as sci-fi races go, I delved further into the hobby and discovered my first love, Space Wolves, I've been hooked ever since and bought my first box of grey hunters later that summer.

You are not free whose liberty is won by the rigour of other, more righteous souls. Your are merely protected. Your freedom is parasitic, you suck the honourable man dry and offer nothing in return. You who have enjoyed freedom, who have done nothing to earn it, your time has come. This time you will stand alone and fight for yourselves. Now you will pay for your freedom in the currency of honest toil and human blood. |

I've been playing RPGs for over 20 years, mainly Star Wars but also some Warhammer Fantasy. So I knew some of the Warhammer background and I even used to buy my RPG books from Games Workshop back inthe late 80's.
In 2004 I started playing Star Wars Miniatures. This year Wizards of the Coast dropped Star Wars. My mates had been buggin me to play 40K, now I had some spare cash I fugured 'why not?'
So, February 2010. I had no intention of getting a big army, just enough Orks to play. "I'm not going to paint them and don't expect WYSIWYG," I told them. Now I have 4000pts of painted Orks as well as 2K Space Wolves and Necrons!

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

One of the best RTS' ever made by far, and it did a good job presenting the lore of 40k to a audience that included people who had probably never heard of it. You don't really see many scifi settings that quite match that of 40k. A nice break from the endless stream of Star Wars and Star Trek clones.
Same here, I loved those games
On a similar note while playing the ork campaign in dark crusade if you maxed your army and then saved and reloaded it reset your army size allowing you to make a huge waagh. Though after awhile the units AI broke and they would no longer auto attack⦠but still it was awesome.

For me it was also Dawn of War on the PC.
For a long time I would walk past GW and look inside but never venture inside, I make no bones about it I am an uber geek, but some part of me inside was fighting it and saying "if you go in there you will cross a line of geekiness from which you cannot turn back", well I am 30 now and happily married so after playing some Dawn Of War I realized I love the fiction of that world, the Space Marines really captured my imagination and as more factions appeared in Dawn Of War I got more into it.
So one day, during my lunch break at my work, I wandered down to GW and asked them to explain the game to me, they offered to run me through a game, that day I was on a short break so I had to get back to work sharpish, they arranged a game for the following day.
I played my first game and loved it, I then explained to the store staff that I would play the game but painting the figures would be a huge hurdle for me, I am very clumsy and suffer from shaking hands, I have always had it, it is why my hand writing is very very messy. The manager of GW then offered to let me have a bash at painting a figure, so we arranged for me to pop down the very next day and try it.
From then I was hooked.
Now at this time, money was tight so I waited until my birthday in September and bought Assault on Black Reach, I am working on getting that altogether, a new job and a few family emergencies (and too many new video games released) have kept me away from it for now but I do intend to get that set built, up and running and get some games.
Dawn of War is a brilliant introduction to the universe for those who have never seen it before, it opens your eyes to the universe and shows you how cool the fiction is.
