I played 40k for a while (I play every now and again, but these days, I'm more likely to find a game of Warmahordes than a game of 40k at my FLGS...), and have found that my biggest issue with the game is the fact that there is just an ungodly amount of painting to do, so I would fall into the habit of buying way too many models, building them, and never getting around to actually painting them. Now that I've started my Khador list, I've pledged to myself that every piece will be painted before fielding, since it doesn't take much time to do, and I don't have to sit in front of 20 of the same model, trudging drearily through a tedious fog to paint every last one of them uniformly.
It's just no fun when it turns into a chore.
My current list is 35 points, and while I'm still waiting on my Warstore order, my model count is only 17 pieces, total, with only 1 repeat model (I took 2 alt-pose manhunters because they were a buck cheaper...) and enough varied work to keep it from being tedious. I already have 2 of the models painted (just gotta base them, but that can wait), and if I just knock out 1 piece per night, I could have the entire set of infantry that I'm ordering finished inside of 2 weeks, painted to my personal tabletop standard, ready to play.
Compare this to, say, the model count for a 1500 point 40k list, and you'll start to get what I'm saying. If I have too much in front of me, my first reaction is to say "it doesn't need to be painted", and move on to building more models.
I'm proud to say that It'll be my first fully-painted faction, in any wargame that I've ever played. I prefer doing detail oriented work, and can give each model the attention it deserves without it taking an eternity to get it done. PP's way of doing things, even with large-scale purchase sticker shock, seems to make for, IMHO, a more enjoyable hobby experience all around.
Agreed. Only difference for me is I hate to field unpainted stuff, so I feel like I HAVE to finish painting before I play. SO then I dont play. Eventually the stuff ends up on ebay. I likely wont ever do a 40K army again, and WHFB is right out. However, every now and then Ill pick up an item of thiers simply because I love minis, and I like to paint in small amounts...so there will be some things I have to get just to build and paint. The new plastic Daemon Prince is on my list when the current projects are done.
Currently on deck is an old style Hive Tyrant from GW, and a Gnarlhorn Satyr and Rhinodon from PP. Theres also a box of Chaos Warriors from GW, but they are gonna get a very basic paint job and a "dip" to finish them off.

Painting Within the Lines

I agree with you guys about the painting. It's what I do for a living, and when I look for a game to play, or even a new army in my currents, I always go for small model count. I paint so much for others, by the time I get to my stuff, I just want a few kickass models to throw around.

I'm sorry but no. I love Warmachine and Hordes, and have more factions and figures than I'd like to admit, but I don't want titans or superheavies for this game. It's enough to have big stompy robots or monsters; I don't need EVEN BIGGER stompy robots and monsters...

Well you don't NEED to buy them, and with the points your opponent is putting into these, they're giving up multiple jacks or infantry squads. As long as they aren't made invincible to all but a few weapon types, because one of Warmachine's biggest strengths is that just about any model can kill or at least damage any other model, whereas in 40k it doesn't matter how many bolter shots you have, you will NEVER kill a Land Raider with them.

And what direction would that be? Each faction so far has a very distinct battle engine, and they're not all stompy robots, heck, one is just a horse drawn armored siege wagon.
Also, big giant robots have been a part of warmachine for a long time now, the colossals are in the fluff as being the original jacks and they were titanic. Also, there are even large labor jacks being used at major ports in the Iron Kingdoms.
And as above, these aren't GW style superheavies. They will be balanced and usable in the base game.

why does Khador suddenly goes into siege?, why they don't make a huge warjack instead?, like middleway between a jack and a colossi?
they already made the behemoth, which mean that multiple operation Jack is possible

GW direction - profit motive over gamers' experiences.
How can you guarantee these wont be GW style? How can you guarantee they wont be unbalanced for basic games?

Colossals are pretty much the nukes of the IK. The Treaty of Corvis bans the things, and I'm not entirely sure the Khadorans are ready to break that quite yet. Also, the Trollkin turn them to scrap rather quickly anyhow. As for the reasons for this particular item, I'd have to wait till I see the fluff, as I'm not even sure exactly what it is yet.

Because Privateer hasn't done so yet? While they COULD say "You know what, let's turn everything on it's head and do something that completely unbalances the game," experience points to them not doing so.

Yeah, because PP has a track record of perfect balance with no codex creep issues at all.

Oh, they've had a habit of creep, certainly (to a point, see pSorscha, etc.). Thing is, it tended to be gradual. Dropping GW-style superheavies right after rebalancing the entire game? Doubtful.

They could likely handle these things by making them so expensive points wise that they're completely unfeasable, or even completely impossible, to run in games smaller than 100 points with fewer than 2 warcasters. IIRC, they've already dropped with a handful of new character jacks, and as long as these things aren't ungodly OP for the points cost, and don't require one of their counterparts to deal with them, well... I don't forsee an issue.
The other piece of the puzzle is that, honestly, I have a distinct feeling that we'll be seeing some tasty goodness to run alongside/against them when they do hit, or even as a leading release to them. Judging by the new base size, they're not going to be a PP baneblade, and certainly not a PP analogue to a Warhound. The bases just aren't big enough.

I really want one of those. The rules for it @ GenCon were stupid. Three grids and it could heal every time it killed something.

Special scenario rules, not actual take it in a tournament rules. Someone's been looking for them on the Cryx forums but no one seems to know what they were.

Not to mention that the whole of the MK2 reboot is a testament to the commitment PP has to keeping things reasonable.
Everything was kept viable, no units invalidated, and all the armies got or are getting their updated army rules within the year, all balanced against each other in tandem. Not to mention publicly playtested by releasing all the rules online for free.
There will always be rules escalation in a miniatures game, make no mistake about it. But Battle Engines are just going to be a fun new addition to the game, everything we've seen from PP this year shows that they know what they're doing, and PP has learned their lessons from MK1.
