This thread is quite entertaining considering the OP is from the UK and pretty much the entire thread is about American politics, which as I am sure we are all aware is significantly different from politics in the UK.

2. Yes, I have been involved with multiple house and school council elections as well as a mock election in May. For those interested, I got defaulted to labour. Lib Dems and Tories came first and second respectively with me beating the third place favourites, UKIP.

3. I see it as a way to ensure stable leadership.

1. Yes.
2. I never did any voting in my school but you use to be able to vote for school president.
3. If I remember correctly 60% of votes are from senior citizens so I don't think enough young peoples views are being represented by the government, young people need to vote. Also people who don't vote shouldn't complain about the government because they have the opportunity every 4 years to have a chance to change government into something closer to what they envisioned. In Canada we are lucky enough to be able to choose a type of government that might best fit our needs I don't think an opportunity like this should go to waste.

The US is a democratic republic. It is both a republic and a democracy. The two terms are not mutually exclusive.

It is entirely correct to refer to America as a democracy and when people correct others for calling America a democracy, it is they who are displaying a lack of education. For example the following statements are all correct:

"America and the United Kingdom are democracies."

"America is a republic, the United Kingdom is a monarchy."

"America and North Korea are republics."

"America is a democracy, North Korean is a dictatorship."

Please, take a college level political science class before running around and "correcting" people on this issue.
